Chapter 921: Character Script

The pale-faced ghostly figure of the female corpse replied in a wavering voice, “To forge a good identity, pass the Intis Group’s interview, and become an employee of the company and a colleague of Zhou Mingrui.

“Interacting with Zhou Mingrui daily, starting off polite and distant, then gradually getting familiar, subtly seducing him in our daily interactions until he falls in love with me.

“I will become his girlfriend, and in the future, enter the marital hall with him. Through prosperity or adversity, wealth or poverty, health or sickness, whether he is male or female, I will always accompany him, never leaving, forever and ever.”

Listening with a slightly agape mouth, the sickly Franca gradually felt bewildered.

Isn’t this character script a bit off?

This is neither an urban fantasy nor a suspense-horror, it’s turned into a pure romance novel…

Is this intended to immerse Mr. Fool in a blissful, sweet love life and a peaceful, warm urban environment, unwilling to wake up?

Is the Celestial Worthy being this down-to-earth?

Is this a large-scale Truman Show for Mr. Fool, isolating him from reality?

When she heard the part about “whether he is male or female”, Franca suddenly snapped awake.

There is a conspiracy here!

There are sinister plots hidden within, with another purpose!

Lumian and Franca had similar thoughts, but Franca’s mind was more active. Lumian was more concerned about another aspect.

The task of the reanimated female corpse did not include inducing Mr. Fool to drink the Witch potion. Does this mean someone else is responsible for turning Mr. Fool into a Demoness?

At this point, Franca quietly said, “The method in the script does seem feasible… To influence Mr. Fool, or Zhou Mingrui, a person so cautious and careful, the only way is to work on ‘falling in love over time’, only through the calm, genuine, day-by-day interaction can connections and trust be built.

“And for this kind of task, the most suitable executor is indeed a Demoness, secondly a Baby Cupid. No wonder they need to revive or awaken this female corpse, Charm can blend into many little details of daily life without being detected…”

“Indeed, following Madam Susie’s reminder, we also seem to be able to only gain Mr. Fool’s trust through similar means, only we don’t need to use Charm, but then the risk of exposure would be too great.” Jenna weighed her words in agreement.

Prolonged, repeated contact with Mr. Fool would easily be noticed by the Celestial Worthy.

Lumian did not respond to Franca and Jenna. He needed to hurry up with the spirit channeling.

Looking at the floating female corpse illusion, he carefully asked, “Are you a marionette?”

Lumian had not experienced the battle with the female corpse’s physical body, the two disease bombs’ explosions, or the discussion about a Marionettist with Franca and the others, so at the time he did not search the 30-40 meter area around the surveillance room to see if there were any Beyonders hiding, until on the way back in the car, after exchanging details of the battle with his teammates, did he consider the possibility of a marionette.

However, not actively searching the 30-40 meter area around the surveillance room did not mean he was not wary of other enemies lurking nearby—that was a basic quality of a Hunter. At the time, he simply did not detect anyone hiding in the vicinity.

This made him uncertain about Franca and the others’ suspicions. Their doubts might not be true, just as the reanimated female corpse did not have powers granted by the Door pathway.

The ghostly female corpse with its sinister black hair replied in a hollow voice, “Yes.”

Yes? She’s really a marionette? Lumian was stunned for a moment, then urgently asked, “Who is your manipulator, and where are they?”

This time, the female corpse illusion did not respond, but slowly raised her head, gazing towards the vast, dark “sky” of the mirror realm.

Lumian and the others may have been influenced by the remnant spirit of the corpse, or perhaps stimulated by the change in the mystical environment caused by this action, and they actually experienced a slight hallucination.

Vaguely, they seemed to see ethereal, dense threads emerging from the corpse’s body, extending upwards towards the heights, and similar illusory threads floating from their own bodies too, also drifting up into the dark, cloud-shrouded night sky.

They also seemed to see the individuals in the city, each of them sprouting numerous, dense illusory threads, connecting to somewhere in the night sky where the moon and stars were obscured by clouds.

Lumian was greatly shocked in both mind and spirit by this scene, but his observational abilities as a Hunter still allowed him to notice one detail.

The illusory threads emerging from themselves and the female corpse had a fairly obvious difference: theirs floated and swayed, as if only attracted and drawn towards some unseen thing high above, without actually deeply integrating into the darkness, while the female corpse’s threads were taut, seeming to merge into the unfathomable blackness.

As for the threads of the other people in the city, Lumian could only vaguely sense them, unable to see them clearly.

Combining the currently available information on The Fool pathway provided by the Major Arcana card holders, Lumian, Franca, Jenna, and Anthony immediately came to the same judgment: the heights represented Mr. Fool, as well as the Celestial Worthy, and the resurrected female corpse was the Celestial Worthy’s marionette!

“No wonder we couldn’t find the Marionettist controlling her in the vicinity…” Jenna had just had this thought when she quickly realized a problem. “No, that can’t be right! If it were like that, we would have already been locked on to by the Celestial Worthy and kicked out of the dream, and even if we weren’t kicked out, we would definitely be under restrictions…”

Shifting gears, Jenna came up with a possibility, “The Celestial Worthy is also in a slumbering state, largely in a dazed, unconscious condition, controlling the marionette, only becoming aware of the corresponding situation when stimulated or when the marionette actively reports back.

“But can an unconsciously controlled marionette exhibit the kind of behavior we saw earlier? Apart from being a bit extreme, obsessed with dealing with us, not leaving in advance, the reanimated female corpse is no different from the real person…”

At this moment, the female corpse illusion began to fade, about to disappear.

The spirit channeling was almost over.

Grasping the last bit of time, Lumian asked in an urgent tone, “Who gave you humanity?”

Jenna immediately understood that Lumian had the same thoughts as her.

He was also very curious about the humanized behavior of the reanimated female corpse or marionette!

The pale-faced female corpse illusion grew fainter and fainter, only the empty voice echoing, “It was Mr. Fool and the Great Mother…”

“Ah?” In her weakened state, Franca’s self-control slipped, the exclamation escaping her lips.

This sounded as if Mr. Fool and the ‘Great Mother had given birth to her, like she was their child…

Lumian ended the spirit channeling and turned to his teammates, saying thoughtfully, “I think I can understand the meaning of that last sentence.

“She should have previously made contact with Mr. Fool or one of his incarnations, a Demoness of Despair. Mr. Fool’s subconscious would instinctively weave an identity, appearance and personality for her based on the image in his memory, and with the Great Mother’s awakening, or rather, giving her new life, she naturally acquired humanity and became a unique marionette capable of autonomous action according to the mission assignment.

“The Oracle’s corpse being sent to the Mushu Hospital morgue is also to create a similar marionette?

“Does Mushu Hospital not only have the Mother Tree of Desire, but also the presence of the Great Mother?”

“I knew it!” Franca had wanted to clap her hands, but after raising them, she had no strength left. “Mushu Hospital may also have the power of the Order of All Extinction.”

Turning his gaze to the tattered yet enchanting female corpse, Lumian observed for a few seconds and said, “No powers from the Door pathway dissipating, nor any decay boons dissipating…”

“I don’t know how they did it… She didn’t show any corresponding abilities in the battle, were those two disease bombs pre-made with some kind of tool? Too bad we didn’t get to ask about the marionette transformation of one of the disease bombs…” Franca grew increasingly fearful of Mushu Hospital.

She didn’t even dare imagine what Lumian would have encountered if he had gone down to the B1 of Mushu Hospital!

Searching the body, Lumian found no other items, then stood up and said to Ludwig, “If you promise to listen to Jenna’s orders from now on, I’ll reward you with this corpse!”

“Okay, I promise!” Ludwig had a completely carefree expression, not caring at all about the future.

Lumian’s true purpose was actually to destroy the body and eliminate any trace, as this was the Celestial Worthy’s marionette. It had to be completely destroyed before the Celestial Worthy’s intermittent awakening, leaving no evidence to avoid drawing attention and anomalies.

Seeing Ludwig rush towards the female corpse, Jenna supported the sickly Franca, and along with Anthony, quickly exited the mirror realm and returned to the rental unit.

Standing beside Ludwig, Lumian asked in a flat tone, “If this corpse is real, would you be able to restore to Sequence 4 after eating it?”

“No, unless you give me the other one too.” Ludwig looked at Lumian with longing.

He was referring to Voisin Sanson’s body. A few days ago, he had received an arm as a reward for his good performance in studying, exams, and homework, so he had fully recovered to the Sequence 5 Depriver level before entering the dream.

Ignoring Ludwig’s plea, Lumian asked instead, “What is your Sequence 4 called?”

Ludwig began gnawing on an arm, answering in a muffled voice, “Sea Monster.”

The next morning, Franca found that her severe illness had not yet recovered. Her forehead still felt feverish; her body weak, and she almost couldn’t get out of bed.

Lumian used the simplest Magic Mirror Divination method to confirm that this was just the lingering effect of the negative effect, and she would be ill for about half a day, not because the healing agent had not worked as it should. He then told Jenna, “We’ll take turns. You take care of her and Ludwig in the morning, I’ll do it in the afternoon.

“Now I’ll drive with Anthony to contact the Major Arcana card holders.”

“Okay.” Jenna had also been somewhat corrupted the night before and needed more rest as well.

Downstairs, getting into the car, Lumian, mimicking Franca, placed his phone on a specially bought holder and opened the navigation app.

Then, under Anthony’s gaze, he used voice input to enter the destination: “Star Dream Provisions Store.”

    (51) Chapter 935: Interview

Lumian didn't try to greet Huang Tao, continuing to look ahead until the elevator doors opened.

It was past the rush hour, and there were only four or five people waiting inside the elevator, entering in sequence.

Today, Lumian just wanted the interview to be successful and hoped there wouldn't be any interruptions. He had no intention of observing CEO Huang or initiating further contact, so he chose to stand as far away from Huang Tao as possible, only nodding politely when their eyes met.

CEO Huang was a well-known figure, and it was impossible for those in the building or those preparing to move into the building not to recognize him. Others in the elevator greeted him in various ways, and Lumian couldn't help but notice.

Huang Tao, with his hands in his pockets, casually chatted with a middle-aged man who appeared to be a leader from a certain department of the Intis Corporation's headquarters, showing none of the authoritative demeanor one might expect from a top boss.

As the elevator stopped at various floors, including Lumian's, people exited in turn. Huang Tao's destination was the sixteenth floor.

His office as CEO was actually located near the tenth-floor administrative department, but he had arranged the sixteenth floor as a luxurious lounge for entertaining guests and for his personal rest.

There was even a swimming pool on this floor.

The beautiful secretary stationed at the elevator entrance turned her head and smiled helplessly, "CEO Huang, why are you taking the staff elevator?"

Normally, the four staff elevators couldn't reach the sixteenth floor, but Huang Tao could access it by card swipe, fingerprint recognition, or facial recognition.

Huang Tao said nothing, merely smiling as he scrutinized every detail of the mature, beautiful secretary's face.

The secretary shivered slightly, lowering her voice to ask, "Mr. Huang, did I not finish my makeup?"

Huang Tao smiled, "Beautiful things are worth appreciating."

Without waiting for a reply, he headed toward the swimming pool, mumbling to himself, "My aesthetic hasn't changed, I actually found a man somewhat attractive just now..."

Meanwhile, at the lottery center's parking lot.

Due to a five-minute delay caused by traffic, Franca turned to Anthony and said, "So far, nothing unexpected has happened."

She didn't utter phrases like "This time it's really smooth" or "We should be able to take the prize today." Better to celebrate once the money's in the account!

Anthony, who had heard Franca explain the prize redemption process seven or eight times, nodded lightly, opened the car door, and walked toward the lottery center.

Franca, still uneasy, handed Ludwig a lollipop, "Stay in the car and wait for me, and don't go anywhere."

"Okay!" Ludwig bit into the lollipop, chewing through the wrapper and swallowing it.

Franca kept the car running to ensure the air conditioning continued to work.

Getting out of the car, she muttered, "This is bad behavior; moms and dads out there, don't leave your kids alone in the car. Turning off the engine is dangerous, and not turning it off can be even worse..."

In this case, however, the danger wasn't to the child but to the car and passersby.

Franca, taking advantage of the shadows cast by the morning sun, snuck into the lottery center, hiding behind an object near Anthony.

She listened closely to Anthony's conversation with the staff, phone in hand, ready to correct any misinformation.

The staff member told Anthony, "The grand prize can't be redeemed at the moment, but the other prizes can."

Really? The method to separate the lottery from the person actually works... Or maybe the Dreamscape is targeting the grand prize winner? Hidden in the shadows, Franca was both surprised and pleased.

After a few more exchanges, the staff member asked for the lottery ticket, and Anthony, pretending to be occupied, took out his phone and called Lumian.

At the tenth floor of the Technology Building, in front of the "Selene" conference room, Lumian and three other candidates were seated, waiting for their interviews.

    Suddenly, his phone rang.

Seeing that the caller was "An Ruide," he declined the call, slipping his right hand into his pocket.

There was a small mirror the size of half a palm and a second-prize lottery ticket in there.

Lumian first wrapped the lottery ticket in layers of spider silk, then encased it in a layer of frost, and finally set the frost ablaze with Destruction Flame.

After quickly completing these preparations, he sent the lottery ticket into the mirror.

The ticket immediately began to fall into a dark, void-like tunnel within the mirror, heading towards its destination.

Along the way, the quietly burning black flame of destruction illuminated the depths of the mirror world, as if warning anything daring to tamper with the lottery ticket.

When the ticket reached Anthony, who had the matching mirror, the Destruction Flame had already been extinguished, burning away the frost and cutting through the metallic spider silk.

The undamaged ticket emerged from the mirror, just in time for Anthony to catch it.

Anthony handed the ticket to the staff member.

The staff member took it, retracted his hand, and muttered under his breath, "Did you keep it in the refrigerator?"

    ***

The tenth floor of the Technology Building, outside the "Selene" conference room.

Lumian quietly let out a sigh of relief:

It seems that the Dreamscape's tendency to interfere with our prize redemption indeed comes from the Celestial Worthy. If Mr. Fool had found something wrong and wanted to stop Franca from claiming the prize, it wouldn't have been so easy to bypass him with a lucky gold coin...

A while later, Lumian's phone vibrated several times.

He checked it and found multiple messages from a WeChat friend named "True Hidden Blade":

"Prize redemption successful! We're rich now!"

"Oh right, the grand prize still can't be redeemed."

"The grand prize still can't be redeemed..." Lumian pondered, "Was the grand prize won by a friend or an enemy? Is the Dreamscape's obstruction coming from the Celestial Worthy, or is it Mr. Fool?"

His earlier assumptions seemed less certain now.

Because of preventing Franca from exchanging the gift of abilities, it was also Mr. Fool, but the goal was to affect the person who won the grand prize, the group they belonged to was impacted. Today, whether the lottery is unrelated to the person exchanging the gift, it will actually succeed.

In Lumian's thoughts, he glanced and saw Zhou Mingrui passing by from afar, but Zhou Mingrui didn't notice the interview happening nearby, as he was discussing something with Rozanne.

"Next, Li Ming." At that moment, the interviewer invited Lumian into the meeting room.

Lumian calmly walked in and politely greeted the two interviewers, one male and one female, before sitting in the chair meant for the interviewee.

After the usual questions, the female interviewer, who appeared to be around thirty, evaluated Lumian several times:

"Why did you stop studying in high school?"

"Young love." Lumian answered without embarrassment.

"Young love isn't usually a reason to drop out of school, is it?" The male interviewer, who also experienced young love, asked curiously.

"I had a child." Lumian calmly added.

The two interviewers were momentarily speechless, both lowering their heads, writing down a paragraph of words to be used as a reference for the subsequent evaluation.

Lumian's eyes suddenly took on a shade of silver-black.

His hands subtly extended, brushing against the flow of fate that was favorable to him.

The interviewers quickly wrote down their observations without much hesitation:

"Decent appearance, height exceeding the standard, young, healthy, and strong, married and had a child early, needs to support a family, and places significant value on money."

After writing this, the female interviewer asked further:

    "How old is your child?"

"7 years old," Lumian replied honestly.

"7 years old? You seem to be only 22 years old," the male interviewer exclaimed in surprise, "Didn't you say you had young love in high school?"

"I only said that I dropped out of high school because of young love, not that I started young love in high school." Lumian explained seriously, "I had a child in 10th grade, and by the second year of high school, both of my parents passed away. I needed to support my family and raise my girlfriend and child, so I had to drop out."

The two interviewers looked at each other, not knowing how to assess this situation.

After a few seconds, the male interviewer asked, "Have you studied martial arts?"

"Should I reveal a bit?" Lumian sincerely inquired.

While asking, his entire demeanor became slightly sharper.

"No need, I can sense it." The male interviewer felt that the person in front of him seemed to know how to fight.

After asking about expected salary and other related questions, the female interviewer told Lumian:

"Go back and wait for the notice. If you don't receive a call within the next two days, it means you didn't pass."

She spoke very directly because this young man seemed approachable; although he dropped out of high school, got into young love, and had a child early, he was very polite and looked rugged yet gentle.

Using a hint of Charm, Lumian stood up and politely said goodbye.

    ***

"Ring ring, ring ring, I am a little newspaper seller..."

Franca hummed a cheerful children's song while driving.

She had just received 156,000 in prize money, and because each prize was less than ten thousand, she didn't need to pay taxes.

For now, the team wasn't in a financial bind. Next, besides eliminating contacts and investigating related people, the main goal was to find ways to make more money to rent one or two items from the Star Dream Provisions Store.

However, the thought of buying more lottery tickets was postponed for a while; the struggle over the lottery exchange seemed intense!

Of course, she could still continue to buy them for fun, but she'd need to switch up the lottery stores frequently.

Imagining the future, Franca's phone suddenly rang.

    She answered using her headset.

The call was from the HR department of Intis Group, inviting Franca for an interview tomorrow morning.

Haha, when everything goes smoothly, everything just aligns! Franca cheerfully muttered to herself.

She then decided to use Illusion and makeup techniques to appear slightly less attractive, to avoid drawing the attention of Mr. Hoang and potentially getting fired, which would hinder her mission involving Zhou Mingrui.

However, looking unattractive didn’t mean becoming ugly; it was just about lowering her appearance to a certain extent. Otherwise, if Mr. Hoang saw her in the administrative department one day and thought she wasn't good-looking, he might fire her outright, and what would she do then?

Having gone a day without encountering any unusual situations, Jenna leaned by the window, observing Rozanne in professional attire, who wore a skirt with stockings and high heels, return home, change into a light dress, grab a white handbag, and head out again.

    (50) Chapter 934: Guardian

Faced with the sudden darkness, Jenna's first reaction was to disappear or hide in the shadows. However, she managed to control herself and did not immediately reveal her extraordinary abilities after the night descended and strange events began.

She used her acting skills to pretend she was just an ordinary person. In the dim light, she fumbled her way out of the bathroom and moved toward the window.

After reaching the living room, aided by the faint light from outside, the shapes of the furniture, such as the coffee table and sofa, gradually became visible. Jenna quickened her pace and reached the window in just a few seconds. Looking outside, she saw that the distant buildings were still brightly lit, and other buildings in the residential area were not entirely shrouded in darkness.

Jenna glanced downward and noticed that other floors also seemed to have their lights on.

"Is it just here that there's a problem? Maybe it's a power outage?" Jenna took out her phone from her jeans pocket, intending to call Franca to ask how to handle this situation.

She suddenly remembered that she was supposed to act independently for the next two days and couldn't contact her team members. So, she switched to searching online for help.

She clumsily typed in, "What to do when the power goes out at home?" and pressed the search button.

Then, remembering Franca's advice, she skipped the first few results and directly looked at the ones further down:

    "First, check the fuse box..."

    "Step by step instructions..."

Jenna frowned as she read through the information: This is hard!

This was all beyond her understanding.

As she kept scrolling, she came across an answer: "Contact the property management!"

"...?" Jenna was momentarily stunned, "You can do that?"

In the afternoon, when she had moved in, she had registered with the property management, adding their number to her contacts.

She tried calling them, reported her apartment number and the problem, and the on-duty property manager immediately said they would send a technician to fix it.

Soon, the doorbell rang, and a property technician arrived carrying a tool bag.

As soon as he saw Jenna, the technician's eyes lit up, and his attitude became very enthusiastic.

Jenna was extremely cautious as she let him into the apartment.

She was prepared for anything unusual.

The technician quickly checked things over and said, "It's a tripped circuit breaker."

With that, he flipped the switch, and the room was immediately filled with light.

That simple? Jenna managed to keep her ignorance from showing on her face.

After seeing the technician out and securely closing the door, she couldn't help but sigh:

"Life in Dream City is really convenient... But the property fees aren't cheap..."

Jenna quickly washed up and got into bed, pretending to sleep like a normal person. However, the tension in her mind never relaxed.

In a drowsy state, her intuition brought her a premonition.

She suddenly became alert and found herself floating in her spirit form in the middle of the apartment complex.

There were many spirits wandering around, seemingly belonging to various families in Dream City. In the air, layers of storms condensed, completely enveloping the area, forming a faint barrier on all sides.

Standing near the barrier was a figure, a woman wearing a light blue dress with brown-dyed hair - Rozanne. In front of Rozanne, strange figures emerged from the darkness, repeatedly attempting to break through the storm and barrier to enter the "apartment complex."

These figures included half-human, half-snake creatures with the upper bodies of beautiful women and the lower bodies of strong snakes covered in smooth scales, beings resembling shrunken humans with owl wings and sharp claws, and many young, naked women with flowing hair, flaunting their curvaceous bodies.

Faced with this invasion of bizarre creatures, Rozanne took out a thick paintbrush and quickly sketched patterns on the faint barrier.

She drew birds circling around a recently completed simple design, and inside, the sun began to shine with a brilliant golden light, forcing the strange creatures to close their eyes.

Soon after, one of the birds ignited in golden flames and flew out of the barrier, heading towards the various monsters.

Seeing this, Jenna was surprised and filled with intense doubt:

The current situation was very different from what she had expected.

Rozanne seemed to be fighting against the bizarre creatures, preventing them from entering the spirit world corresponding to Dream City. She appeared to be acting as a Guardian.

But the abilities she displayed clearly belonged to the "Painter," a power granted by the Outer Deities!

"Rozanne should be working with those strange creatures to invade the spirit world corresponding to the apartment complex. Why is she guarding the barrier instead?"

"Moreover, in the previous incident at apartments, Lumian, Franca, Anthony, and I didn't encounter any similar invasions by bizarre creatures. Is it the direct contact Lumian had with the image of Mr. Fool in the Dream City that caused this change, or does Dream City itself have some unique characteristics?" Jenna pondered, observing that Rozanne was holding her ground well, so she decided not to offer assistance and instead pretended to be an ordinary household spirit, idly wandering inside the barrier.

And so, it went on until dawn.

    ***

At Tin Hong Apartments, in the rented room.

Worried about Jenna, Franca woke up early and saw Lumian, who had been up all night, place a small cage on the dining table. Inside was a gray and white mouse.

—Ludwig's presence had made small creatures like mice and cockroaches virtually extinct in this rented apartment. Yesterday, Lumian and his team had deliberately gone around the complex before dark and finally caught one.

Franca sat down and watched as Lumian put on gloves and took the shivering mouse out of the cage, pouring the insomniac potion into its mouth.

The mouse only took a sip before the potion rushed into its body like a flood, with no regard for whether it could contain so much.

In the blink of an eye, the mouse suddenly swelled, its short gray-white fur standing on end like a hedgehog, turning black.

Under its armpits and between its chest and belly, flesh wriggled as if new limbs were about to sprout.

"Out of control?" Lumian and Franca simultaneously had this thought.

Ludwig looked on in surprise, and then, in a swift motion, he swallowed the mutated mouse whole.

Chewing, chewing, chewing, he closed his eyes in satisfaction.

“Is it really safe to eat like this?” Franca looked toward Ludwig with a bit of concern.

    This food has extraordinary properties!

    Ludwig mumbled in response:

“No, it’s digestible, for now, just existing…”

Lumian nodded, holding the now-empty bottle of the Sleepless drink, and said:

    “This really is a potion.”

Franca sighed a little and replied with a "Mmm":

“Whenever I'm in a similar situation, that’s when I clearly feel that this is a Dreamscape.”

    Everyday life feels too real!

Looking up at the early morning sky, Franca pondered and asked Lumian:

“Are you going for an interview in the morning and joining us in the afternoon for the lottery exchange?”

“You guys go in the morning.” Lumian said with a laugh before Franca could voice her question, “But the lottery ticket is with me.”

    Franca immediately understood:

“So you mean, the difficulty or misfortune of exchanging the prize, or the Dreamscape’s tendency to resist this, is focused on the lottery ticket and not on us?

“Also, if the repulsion from the Celestial Worthy could directly target us, we would have been kicked out of the Dreamscape already.

“Okay, Anthony and I won’t bring the lottery ticket with us. We’ll visit the lottery center like tourists, and when it’s time to present the ticket, you’ll use the mirror world to deliver it, completing the exchange before any repulsive event can occur?”

“Exactly, and it’s also a way to test whether your hypothesis about the Dreamscape’s tendencies is correct, and if so, what the operating rules are.” Lumian nodded slightly.

After breakfast, Lumian changed into a white shirt and black trousers, took the résumé and related documents he printed out yesterday, along with the lottery ticket, and took public transportation to the Intis Group’s tech building. Franca, meanwhile, drove Anthony and Ludwig to the lottery center.

In front of the tech building, Lumian looked up at the sixteen-story building, mixed with the working-class crowd, and walked in confidently.

He had no trouble along the way; there were no bus breakdowns, traffic accidents, or other unexpected incidents due to carrying the lottery ticket—his destination was in the opposite direction of the lottery center.

Lumian didn’t rush to the interview. Instead, he went to the floor information board and examined the building's company structure:

The building is owned by the Intis Group. Floors one to five are allocated to Intis Group subsidiaries, floors six to nine are leased to other companies, the tenth floor is half-occupied by the Intis Group headquarters and half by the Aurora Company, floors eleven and twelve are also leased out, and floors thirteen to fifteen are used by other departments of the Intis Group headquarters. The sixteenth floor is exclusively reserved for the Emperor Roselle - Huang Tao.

“Just as Franca said, there’s definitely something wrong with this building. The Intis Group could have gathered some of its departments and subsidiaries together and taken over the sixteenth floor, so why rent out several floors? Also, the headquarters' administrative and technical departments share a floor with the Aurora Company… It’s as Franca said, highly suspicious.” Lumian thought seriously.

When Franca first looked at the information about this tech building, she immediately sensed something was off:

It didn’t quite match her previous impressions.

Lumian thought for a few seconds and muttered to himself:

“Is this a kind of symbol?

“Is this building a symbol of the Intis Republic, with the rented floors representing the infiltration of cults and other forces into the Republic? Is this how Mr. Fool perceives the Intis Republic?”

Lumian didn’t linger too long. He withdrew his gaze and entered the elevator.

He occasionally glanced at the metal reflective surfaces, waiting for Franca or Anthony to call him.

The elevator’s floor indicator numbers changed slowly, and a new person joined Lumian.

It was a young man with dyed brown hair, very handsome and trendy.

Huang Tao? Out of the corner of his eye, Lumian recognized the person’s identity.

This was the Dreamscape Emperor Roselle, the CEO of Intis Group, Huang Tao, who often rode the regular elevator with employees instead of the private one!

    (49) Chapter 933: New Residence

"Damn, could it really be such a coincidence?" Franca blurted out after hearing the key content of the new developments.

Yesterday afternoon, Lumian had his first encounter with Mr. Zhou Mingrui, representation of Mr. Fool in a Dreamscape, and last night, during a thunderstorm, four individuals from the security department of the Intis Corporation went missing?

Is this a chain reaction brought about by that encounter in the Dreamscape, or is there someone pulling the strings behind the scenes?

"I don't know if this is a good or bad sign..." Jenna, who had been reading the news with them, voiced her concern quietly.

    Lumian remained rather calm:

"Whether it's good or bad, becoming employees of Intis Corporation and working alongside Zhou Mingrui is something we have to do. No matter if it's dangerous, we have to go!"

Because the interview with Intis Corporation was already imminent, Lumian and the others went out after lunch to find a real estate agent and search for a new place to stay.

According to their planned strategy, they would carry out their next actions either alone or in pairs, working independently to avoid a situation where one person's failure drags down the entire team.

    — During the observation phase, the risk isn't great, so they could act together. But when it comes to contact and investigation, every step might attract the attention of the Celestial Worthy.

This time, Lumian and his group chose an apartment complex three stations away from their current residence, called Dechuang Residence. It's a complex with only a five-year history, so the buildings are still quite new, and the surrounding area is filled with big brand stores and popular spots.

They chose this place because the information provided by the Major Arcana indicated that an administrative staff member of the Intis Corporation, who corresponds to the real-world image of Rozanne, rents an apartment here.

She is also a target they need to contact and test.

Inside the apartment complex, the marble floors reflecting sunlight and the gray sofas in the corners gave off a clean, bright, and subtly luxurious atmosphere.

"A one-bedroom apartment costs two thousand a month," Jenna lamented softly after the real estate agent and landlord left.

This rent was almost as much as they were paying for their current three-bedroom apartment.

The difference in rental prices across different areas and the age of the buildings was astonishing!

"Expensive or not, we still have to rent it!" Franca gritted her teeth.

"We have to cash in that lottery ticket tomorrow! That's another six thousand gone!"

    — Although both the landlord and the real estate agent were men, Jenna didn't use Charm when negotiating the price. In fact, she even used Slander and makeup tricks to make herself look more ordinary. She only relied on her Instigation ability to cut two hundred off the rent and one month's deposit.

Lumian nodded lightly, agreeing with Franca's attitude.

In his view, as long as it's to complete the mission, and as long as it's within their means, they should spend the money, even if it hurts!

As he glanced around, Lumian noticed a vending machine in the corner of the apartment lobby, its drink bottles designed with a certain aesthetic appeal.

Remembering the hints in the data, Lumian walked over and saw that a few of the drinks were visible through the machine's window, while the rest were stored inside, only available through blind selection.

He was particularly familiar with the names of these new drinks:

"Hunter, Assassin, Pryer, The Sleepless..." All of them were names of potions... Franca followed him over, inhaling sharply and speaking in a low voice, "Could they really be real?"

She also recalled the information about "Fully Automated Vending Machines" and "Fully Automatic Wishing Machine".

Lumian studied the vending machine for a few seconds before smiling and saying:

"Only seven items on the top list, not many choices. If they had War Bishop or Unaging Demoness, I'd be tempted to spend thousands on this machine."

"Even if you got one, there's no way to consume it", Franca reminded him as she pulled out her phone to scan the QR code on the screen.

    She said excitedly:

    "Let's see what I get."

"Based on the law of supernatural convergence, you're more likely to get something related to Demoness or Hunter" Jenna calmly warned.

    Franca laughed:

"The point isn't what I get; it's about getting a bottle, finding a test subject, and seeing if it's really a potion."

As she spoke, Franca completed the payment of five coins.

With a click, a blind box was pushed out, dropping into the retrieval slot.

Franca picked it up, opened it, and found a black bottle with a raised area depicting a howling wolf's face:

    "The Sleepless!"

"Oh, the Path of Darkness?" Franca was surprised, "Not a Hunter, nor a Demoness?"

    She quickly found an explanation:

"My list isn't high enough, and I don't have any divinity, so the convergence effect isn't that strong."

After storing the Sleepless drink in her Traveler's Bag, Franca suddenly laughed:

"Actually, an ordinary Sleepless drink could be made too. Just overdose on caffeine and tannin!"

The group didn't linger by the vending machine any longer. They walked through the lobby and headed towards Building Five — where their rented apartment was located.

Before exiting the lobby, Lumian felt a slight stirring in his heart and naturally turned his head to look at the vending machine.

There was nothing in that secluded corner.

The potion vending machine had disappeared!

"As expected..." He wasn't surprised at all.

Franca and the others followed his gaze and also had the feeling that they were seeing a conclusion that had always been inevitable.

    ***

At dusk, after Jenna had settled into the Dechuang Garden and was seated in the entryway of Building Five, she patiently waited for her target to appear.

After an unknown amount of time, she caught sight of the figure she had observed before, reflected in the glass doors of the entrance.

Jenna stood up naturally, brushing the hair that had fallen beside her cheek back behind her ear.

She began to walk at a leisurely pace until she approached a girl in a light blue long dress, with slightly curly dyed hair, who looked just over twenty, carrying a white handbag.

Jenna "Just moved" to meet the other person face-to-face, her expression showed surprise, and with a bit of shyness, she asked:

"Hello, do you know how to get to the activity room in this complex?"

The girl in the green dress was Zhou Mingrui's colleague, Rozanne, an administrative staff member at Intis Group. She kindly pointed in a direction:

"Go out from the East gate, it's on the left."

"Thank you." Jenna sincerely asked, bringing a slight smile.

She had removed her makeup earlier, along with using a suppressed Charm of level 7.

This smile, like a blooming flower, lit up Rozanne's eyes.

Rozanne blinked, revealing an appreciative expression:

    "You’re so beautiful..."

Before Jenna could modestly respond, Rozanne enthusiastically and sincerely asked:

    "Could you be my model?

"I'm an amateur learning to draw, and my drawings are pretty good; I especially like drawing beautiful people and landscapes.

    "I’ll pay you!"

Drawing... Jenna's temples throbbed, recalling unpleasant memories.

For her, Artist was a terrifying profession.

She once killed her painted self within a painting.

In a dream, Rozanne was influenced by the Fantasy Organization and that Corrupted God, causing her to...? Jenna instinctively shook her head:

"I'm really sorry, I don’t have any thoughts of modeling for now."

"It's really a pity; my drawing skills are quite good. I’ll show you some of my works later; maybe you’ll change your mind." Rozanne took out her phone and smiled, "You just moved in, right? I’ve been here for years, and I’ve never seen such a beautiful girl like you before. Let’s add each other on WeChat?"

Jenna had considered using an excuse to add Rozanne on WeChat, but she didn’t expect it to happen so quickly, which seemed a bit off!

After pondering for a few seconds, she hesitantly said, "I’m just a temporary tenant."

"What’s wrong with being a tenant? I used to be one too," Rozanne indicated that it was no big deal.

"Alright then." Jenna intentionally made herself appear somewhat weak, not very good at refusing others' kindness and enthusiasm.

While adding WeChat, she deliberately chose the option "Just for chatting."

This was to avoid looking too eager to add a stranger, without the intention of proactively making Rozanne a friend.

After walking around the activity room outside the east gate of the complex, finding a place to have dinner, Jenna noticed that it was already dark.

She returned to the 23rd-floor apartment she had rented, which had been vacant for two days, staying alone there.

Under the light fixtures resembling stars, Jenna's eyes swept across the simply elegant decorations, the gray-orange sofa, the sleek metal window frames, and the faintly visible bright-colored bedspread in the bedroom.

Compared to the three-bedroom, one-living room apartment that Lumian and the others were currently renting, this one-bedroom, one-living room apartment was clearly newer, with better decorations—simple yet sophisticated.

Jenna walked towards the window, her fingers brushing over the white dining table, feeling the textured wallpaper, the artistic desk lamp, the long-necked vase with plastic flowers, and the cold window ledge, casting her gaze outside:

Tall buildings scattered along the streets, most windows glowing with warm lights, blending with the flowing lights of cars on the road.

"How beautiful..." Jenna admired the scene from the bottom of her heart.

She returned to the sofa area, her steps becoming a little lighter.

When she earns enough money, she'll let Lumian and Franca rent a place like this too!

Jenna sat down, calmly waiting for any unusual occurrences that might arise from her contact with Rozanne.

As time passed, she browsed through her phone.

She saw someone reviewing the movie "Pirates 3":

"Three beautiful female pirates hanging around, and they only end up with a dumb captain? Give me my money back!"

Upon reading this comment, Jenna felt a bit confused.

She didn't think there was anything wrong with the plot.

As soon as the show started, she knew the outcome would be like this:

Gehrman Sparrow is Mr. Fool`s incarnate, also his apostle, who joined forces with another of Mr. Fool`s Oracle, Danitz, and left together — wasn't that perfectly logical?

Moreover, in reality, Gehrman Sparrow never ended up with any of the three female pirate admirals!

Jenna felt that the real flaw was that apostle Danitz didn't play the role he should have, like a minor character within a minor character.

Afterward, Jenna played on her phone for nearly two hours, but nothing unusual happened.

Looking at the time, she got up and walked towards the bathroom, intending to freshen up a bit.

As she stepped into the bathroom and turned on the lights, she suddenly heard a faint sizzling sound.

The entire apartment suddenly plunged into darkness. All the lights went out.
