Chapter 70: Wild Law Seekers Are Simply Disasters |
The thing stuck onto Samuel was a red, badge-like object.
It was round, uneven, with a few patterns drawn on its surface.
Samuel could roughly guess what these patterns were, after all, it wasn't his first time seeing them.
They were probably some kind of official mystical means, similar perhaps to the runes of Norse mythology.
Only after that rose-red badge was stuck onto Samuel did the sibling pair, handcuffed together, dare to look at him.
Samuel locked eyes with the brother and sister, blinking.
He could indeed feel his spirituality being restrained.
But this was because he had violated Liant Town's rule of "no contact with the outside world," thus incurring "punishment."
Perhaps because he had broken the rules too many times, this "punishment" was quite noticeable, allowing him to clearly feel that his spiritual circulation had become somewhat sluggish.
Well...
Nothing.
So am I being contained now?
Should I react somehow?
Uh... like what?
His eyes swiveled around, looked down at the badge stuck on his body, then shifted his gaze back to the sibling pair before him.
Can't guess, buddy.
Give me a hint.
First time being sealed, no experience, please be understanding.
The scene fell into an awkward stalemate.
The Public Security Bureau personnel were also seeing this situation for the first time.
In similar incidents before, containment objects were either instantly sealed the moment the "Sealing Mark" was applied, or they would struggle frantically, erupting with all kinds of strange abilities.
But this situation? They really had never encountered it before.
It wasn't struggling or resisting, nor did it seem to be sealed.
Dozens of eyes stared at each other.
A few of Samuel's eyeballs shifted slightly, his gaze sweeping over the various internal organs hanging from the tree, then landing back on the faces of the sibling pair.
You've looked me over inside and out, so you'd better take responsibility.
One of his exposed bones twitched, completely unaware that it was his own "bare-faced" behavior causing the issue.
The sister, Anlina, instinctively looked back at Captain Calvin.
This clearly hadn't worked.
If the "Sealing Mark" had taken effect, the target would have been directly absorbed into a square glass... picture frame, appearing like a painting painted on glass.
But right now, it clearly hadn't worked at all.
Calvin also watched this scene, frowning slightly.
He hesitated for a moment, then waved for two team members to keep their distance, and put away the white chess piece in his hand.
As he expected, even without the suppression of the white chess piece, this tree still didn't struggle.
Rather, it hadn't shown any stress response from the very beginning. Its only external reaction had been to open a few eyes and blink.
It seemed to be a perfectly law-abiding citizen.
"Proceed with containment directly. You guys lift this tree, along with some of the soil beneath it, and bring it to... uh... inside the carriage..."
His voice grew quieter and quieter, eventually becoming somewhat inaudible.
Put it inside the carriage?
It clearly couldn't fit at all.
If placed on top of the carriage, it would most likely frighten the passersby.
During operations, the Public Security Bureau needed to minimize stimulation to ordinary people.
Scaring ordinary folks was a minor issue. The real fear was driving them mad, turning them into neurotics who would instantly become Law Seekers of [Fallacy], [Self-Only], [Calamity], or [Corruption].
That would be another batch of unstable factors.
It wasn't that all wild Law Seekers had to be contained. Take Anlina, for example—even though she had set foot on the [Corruption] Law, she wasn't forcibly imprisoned. She just had to have her brother as her guardian every time she went out.
But the fear was that some wild Law Seeker would end up fighting phantoms, fantasizing about all sorts of behind-the-scenes big bads, lurking silently in the crowd, and without a word, pulling off a massive stunt for the Public Security Bureau.
Especially the [Self-Only] Law Seekers.
If they spent all day fantasizing about various apocalyptic disasters, those disasters might genuinely come true.
Something similar had happened before.
A few survivors of extraordinary incidents gathered together, brainwashing each other, influencing each other, polluting each other, resonating with each other.
Several young people who, through coincidence and mutual influence, had set foot on the [Self-Only] and [Elysium] Laws, had actually conspired and theorized their way into a (pseudo) descent of an evil god.
In just a few seconds, Samuel, who was silently reading minds, roughly understood the situation from the thoughts of the several public security officers.
Ohhh!
The seal turns something into a painting?
He really had to try that!
As for why this thing didn't work on him, Samuel had figured it out.
This thing was too weak.
Even though this was already the strongest sealing-type Law Object they could apply for.
Its strength was still far too low.
Although the manifestation of this object looked somewhat like a dimensionality reduction attack, its essence was actually closer to space folding.
From the memories of these public security officers, this object could only be effective on containment objects below the five-mark level.
And even some slightly stronger four-mark Law Seekers could break it from the inside.
Like their Chief, for example.
As for why they were so surprised that it "couldn't be used on Samuel,"
The reason was simply that they had never faced Law Seekers or containment objects above the five-mark level.
But strictly speaking, it wasn't entirely incomprehensible.
Although in Samuel's perception, he had encountered at least four Law Contemplators and two Law Inscribers right after landing.
In reality, in this world, Law Contemplators were already considered "scarce" on the surface.
As for Law Inscribers, there were fewer than ten on the entire planet, and it was debatable whether there were even five.
So why did Samuel encounter two as soon as he arrived?
First, because high-level beings indeed had a fateful attraction to each other, and high-level beings held a huge attraction for lower-level ones.
Second, because he was asking for it.
The moment he opened his eyes, he polluted an entire city.
And it was the capital of Liastan.
The Royal Family didn't want any unnecessary trouble and ignored him, so he went and burned their portrait.
Burned a whole roomful of them.
Wiping out his own assets while simultaneously bombarding the kingdom's king with coordinates and taunting him to his face.
Saying he was asking for trouble wasn't unfair at all.
This was what created the illusion that this world seemed to have a large number of Law Contemplators and Law Inscribers.
But for these public security officers, the four-mark Chief was already the biggest shot they could imagine.
They hadn't even seen the Chief personally take action very often.
What they saw the most were minor scuffles between one and two marks.
They started to get uncertain when facing three marks and above.
Now, look at Samuel.
Although this tree form of his, which had been turned into a tree, was just a single eye of his main body,
It was still a body polluted by a Law Inscriber, not something that this almost "mass-produced" Law Object could mess with.
But that didn't matter.
Samuel was very curious about the sealing effect of this Law Object.
So he was willing to be sealed.

PS: Went to the hospital today, only one chapter, sorry about that.
