    Panaxeth is playing them imo, sowing discord and want them to destroy the sovereign gate's system which is probably the guardian ( I think the guardian was always under Panaxeth's control); probably because that's the only way to get itself free.
    And for doing that he needs Zorian for some specific reason.
    Maybe if someone else gets out Panaxeth will be trapped...So maybe he didn't allow anyone to go out.... Red robe was just soul killed by Panaxeth (or maybe he was zach all along), either way Panaxeth barred the gate and told a lie in the form of the guardian when Zorian first entered that space. Or if Zach was Red robe all along, maybe he made the guardian say that lie. And later Panaxeth barred the gate again, and chose the suitable candidate to frame as a traitor, the sus witch.
    Now he again tries to separate Zorian from the group and recruit him to its side.
