Ants work for the collective so they don't care if some of them die. Much like the centipedes. As long as the collective's goal is achieved. Anthony is human. Individualistic. It looks idiotic to him that those ants would make those suicide charges.

I was a bit annoyed when he chose to keep his species during second evolution, but now, I accept his choice because it's made him a bit more courageous

    ...???
yup somehow he survived against something previously describe as possibly 2 or 3 evolutions ahead of him... Meaning it could potentially have near 100 or way even over that. Since the ape seem to take a full power no brain approach.

But somehow he can dodge and hang on... How? I honestly don't know... It'd be reasonable if the first 3 shots hit his joints or smth... But nope, he just does it.

The croca wasn't described so by the narrator, it was Anthony making an assumption upon seeing the how large and powerful it was. This was also an assumption pre-evolution, so currently he'd say the beast is one, maybe two evolutions above him.
So, considering the difference isn't as wide anymore (especially considering Anthony had a stronger than usual evolution thanks to saturating his core), that he is not fighting entirely alone and that the beasts are weakened from their fight... It not as much a stretch for this victory to happen.

I don't think evolutions really matter here.
Look up bullet ant and why its called like that. Now assume that ant has human intellect and is under your clothes. It will be stinging you repeatedly. What will happen?
I think this is what author was implying at least.
