I thought mc was supposed to be smart? Just barter it down a bit while he needs food they also need bullets. Paying it is just streight up dumb.
Though it aperently is a plot device, which makes it even worse. I heard a lot of good about this and so far it wasn't bad but now seems to go to shit like almost all novels.
And the world also sound really unrealistic. Having such destined ethnistics is just very unlikely in such a world. Not to mention that it makes no sense for there to be sich vast areas of open land in a world concerned with resources. Salon wey would the countries not want a large amount of people. All of this seems like it was written to sound cool but without having to put actual thought I to it.

It didn't say anything about the merchant needing bullets. All that was stated was that bullets were expensive.
Gunpowder was extremely valuable among wanderers as hunting was a key source of food.

Whereas it's stated in the begging of the chapter that Han Xiao is desperate.

Furthermore, it was said in the last chapter that the relationship between wanderers and outsiders was shaky.
So hoping for a fair deal in this situation is, in my opinion, beyond naive.

You don't seem to understand the difference between expensive and valuable. Ammunition is not just expensive but valuable. Meaning it is needed a lot. And to get food, a basic requirement for human life, no less.
Yes the might have some outer sources but they still need it and as much as they can get.
They aren't desperate, but they highly value it as they need it to survive. That is was valuable means. Expensive just means it costs a lot. Completely different concept.

And yes he is desperate. But that doesn't mean he needs to show that. That's like the most basic principle of bartering. Like seriously, have you never bought something?
And how shaky the realtion is is kidna irrelevant if you have a mutuall interests.
A fair trade is unlikely, yea , as he clearly has a distvantafe here. Doesn't mean he needs to let himself get scammed to this extend though.

This is a merchant we're talking about, not the village in it's entirety. He's not worried about how he can use the bullets, but how much he can sell them for. His livelihood is the amount of stuff he has, not the number of bullets in his inventory.
Yes, ammunition is needed; but that's for certain professions to worry about. The only way a merchant can use them would (obviously) be as merchandise.
Basically, to a merchant the only difference between valuable and expensive is that one sells more.

That said, I'm no expert in how underdeveloped economies work. If merchants also had to take on the job of hunting, then everything I just said may as well be irrelevant.

Anyway, buying food, water, and maps just screams "I don't have the necessaties." I'm clueless as to how you would hide that.

Dozens of wanderers gathered around in an instant. Some of them even came with sticks and bats.

And this is why the relationship matters.

According to how this reads, though not explicitly stated, the economy here is either a coming a partial coming or a bartering economy.
In all of these cases the merchant who is part of it gets all his food from hunters or himself. In either cases he needs to give bullets for it. Aquaring bullets is his job here.
If he gives them just as she gets them or exchanges them for food isn't really relevant. He most likely has basically no food trading partners outside the community.
So how many bullets he has also means how many bullets the community has and therofor how much food it has and and therfor he gets.
This isn't a fully build economy with a close to infinity amount of trading Partners in which such direct connections wouldn't be relevant.
The supply of bullets in such a small comunity directly Effekts the food supplies and therfor how much he gets to eat. Traveling alone is not something anyone can or wants to do. He is dependent on the community for food and therfor the community (including him) is dependet on the supply of bullets. Yes they don't desperately need them right now, but they are always in need.

And yes they aren't gonna be happy, but the fact they did trade with him shows that when it comes to benifits this isn't so important anymore.

“He who comes from afar is a guest. You look too frail to be travelling alone. Why not recuperate over at my house?”

Seems like the Start of a quest.

I've heard the first line countless times, but it truly is a good phrase. He has come a long way, his destination is farther more, so there's no point causing further suffering to such a person

The idea of advancing humanity and stepping out into space sparked a movement for sustainability, and the idea of unifying countries gained some popularity. While it was indeed far-fetched to think that that alone could change the face of the entire planet, there were people in power who supported the idea and conspired behind the scenes to make it happen. Long story short, after numerous wars, negotiations, and all kinds of peaceful and non-peaceful efforts, all the countries were united into the Six Nations in the span of a few decades.
seem that's gonna happen, maybe not in my time
