    They were typical malaria symptoms, so there was no need for further confirmation.

    Yeeeeeaaaahhhhh...... This isn't written by a doctor, or at least a really competent one, a scientist, or with realistic scoentific theory in mind. But the way this story is structured, with the protag himself aware of tropes and actively thinking to use them instead of avoiding them is a breath of fresh air for me.
