God damn, just extend this little arc by like three chapters and this wouldn’t be so forced so badly. Give us two or three chapters of mostly mundane things that work towards character and world building with a scene or two of build up. Some random occurrence is never instantly brought up at a dinner table.

Maybe the house head happened to walk by, saw the jars, and became slightly curious. The next day he hears servants talking about them and offhandedly asks about them. The next has this dinner table scene with better descriptions, less exaggerated mannerisms, and a slower build up. Wham, got a decent extension and you don’t write a forced, and truly shit chapter.

Every thing they attempted to accomplish, the relationships they were trying to build, could have easily been opened up using those “mundane” scenes. The only reason not to do something like that is ineptitude and laziness.

These people are supposed to be a scholarly family, people who value principles like integrity, humility, honor, etc…. Those that are the main focus of most chinese scholarly classics and would, at least perfunctorily, be upheld in most settings. It makes no sense that they wouldn’t at least attempt to uphold them in a smei-formal setting.

      Ah..
      That's mostly true.
But don't forget that each and every individuals are different being.
Even if they're from a scholar family, there's always a slim chance that a crook is born from main Family.
Like what we read in early chapter.
Human are born kind, habit that shape their living behaviors or something like that.

Saying anything in the defense of it is just coping, its sub par writing no matter how you look at it.

do you just like reading for readings sake? that would be f#cking boring. We already know he's gonna see it so it's no problem to skip to it.

And if you had actually deeped it you would realize that your idea was f#cking shit. Why would the clan head even walk by their shed? Is it not more likely that the aunt or the servant who brings them food would be the ones to carry news of the experiment?
