    If the bet is placed based on his own confidence then its an investment rather than pure gambling. Its like investing in stocks, but the stock is him. He knows its on the rise so he should invest.

    Him placing in the top 10 is like a 90% chance at this point. Following the rule of only betting what you can afford losing I think its a worthwhile investment to bet about 10-20k. Especially since anyone not in the top 3 schools will probably have favorable odds in this tournament.

    I would never bet on someone else their success however. Thats just pure gambling at that point, instead I would only place bets on myself if I am confident of success. And again.. not betting something I can't afford to lose. Losing 10-20k is annoying, but will not cripple his cultivation plans.
