This is a sinister story about Kazuki Hoshino, who is almost madly attached to his everyday life, and his antagonist Aya Otonashi, who suddenly transfers into his class—for the 13,118th time.

She majestically announces to “break” him, without paying heed to anyone else around them.

This is but the start of a dark roller coaster ride that turns the two against themselves, the people around them and the one who may be god.

Read on as their relationship slowly changes as they go against their most basic values in their struggle against the world itself. Collapse

A Wish, a Box, and the Price We Pay - an INKDRUNK review

What if the one thing you desired most could be granted....without tricks, without malice....but at a cost that quietly unravels you from the inside out? bow

Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria (Japanese name of the Light novel) doesn’t break new ground in the “be careful what you wish for” genre...but it masterfully repaints it with sharper hues. Unlike other stories where malicious gods or evil artifacts twist your desires. And that’s where the tragedy begins. sigh

Each arc reshapes the world....time loops, body swaps, psychological death games, revolutions...yet through it all, the emotional gravity never lets up. This isn’t a tale about beating the odds. It’s about bearing them.

Romance here isn’t shallow or immediate. It simmers, festers, and demands emotional sacrifice. The main pair go through thorns, doubt, and guilt, making the love that survives feel earned, not gifted. It’s messy, human, and beautiful in its struggle.

Even better, the story doesn’t revolve solely around the MC. Every key character receives depth, development, and despair. They’re not just sidekicks....they're all protagonists in their own stories.

But be warned: this isn’t a sunshine-and-friendship kind of story. The MC’s strength is born in suffering. Mentally he’s broken and reassembled again and again. His growth is not flashy...it’s painful. It hurts to watch, and that’s the point. want forwhat

The final volume (yes book7) ties up the tale neatly.....though not every reader will agree with its destination. Still, the conclusion is decisive, and every character gets their due. welldone

Now, just a small personal note, a personal rant you can consider...i will put it as a spoiler. The following note is personal and unrelated to the novel itself. If you're only here for the review, you can stop reading here

Please give this a try. Depending on your preferences, you’ll either love it or hate it. Extra emphasis on the obsessive love tag by volumes 5-7, which can turn some people off.

It is a mix of love and hate, I usually do not like consuming media that torment me, but this is one of those that I couldn't get away from.
