Because he's wrong. Dao (curved sword) often gets mistranslated to knife like it did in this novel. Nobody is practicing the dagger dao in a cultivation novel.

Earlier it was a large blade, which lead me to believe he was going to be a heavy saber user and continue the old swords vs sabers rivalry.

Then it turned into to a knife, which lead to believe it would be a super close range high penetration weapon like a dagger to compliment his heavy defense focus.

When the Li Xuan was explaining his weapon Dao, it was stated that the size of the blade didn't matter. Meng Chao even mentioned he was amazed about a small blade being so effective.

At this point I have no clue.

I believe he used to use a heavy/large blade when he was a normal martial artist.

His brother gave him a treasure "blade" from the Qi treasury.

Now the descriptions don't mention the blade, but something more like a dagger soul.

This guy he's fighting has some old dagger he cared enough to hide for years. Which will most likely become loot.

I wouldn't be surprised if he just carries multiple blades of different sizes in the future. That way he can contrast more to Xu Yan.

      Qi focused vs Body focused.
      Technique vs raw strength.
Single blade superiority vs multiple blade versatility.

In the end, the translation is subpar and I've been paying less attention to these significantly important details.

      Still an interesting read though.

I think it's supposed to be a "blade". There's various titles that used sword vs blade.

Sword: often two-faced straight weapon (like a sword of a western knight or typical cultivator sword. Ex: sasuke sword).

Blade (or sometimes called sabre): a cirved one-faced weapon. Ex: samurai, arabian blade, etc. a knife is considered a blade because it's often one sided. There's a straight knife/dagger but I believe they can be considered as "very short sword"
