“It was that War Maiden and the city she was hired to protect that became the ruin of my great army, my empire, and me. By the time I finally managed to kill her, it was already too late... everything around me was in ruins. She was cast to Hell for breaking the divine covenant, while the Dragon built his empire on the ruins of what she had destroyed. He could have never defeated me himself... if he tried, Eurys would have never gotten the chance to kill him. Because I would have ended him long before that." that is what azarax says after he got free from the tree

For effie to become Supreme her act of defiance is to survive against Azarax, because the fate of the original War Maiden was that she ended up dying. Perhaps that is how the 4th Nightmare works i think

Am I missing something, or is g3 deliberately not showing us the Jet yet. I feel like she will be the one variable who can change the course of this battle, given that Azarax is wary of her Aspect.

I'm good with spoilers, I don't really mind. The cohort looks solid. I wonder why Cassie isn't among them? I'm gonna guess she either became supreme naturally already or dead. But since it's Cassie we are talking about, I would lean towards her becoming supreme more, it was already hinted in the previous chapter from her pov when she was fragmented..

You know, there's a second way to complete this nightmare that they haven't explored. They could turn on the Mason and willingly join Azarax in conquering the city.

The crux of this nightmare is the city. Repelling and defeating Azarax would fulfill the conditions of the nightmare, but so would destroying the city. Heck, they could probably just bail completely and run away, and it would be mission accomplished as far as the Spell is concerned. And considering that originally the War Maiden repelled and broke Azarax, they might even get a good rating for having changed fate by a large degree

Are you sure a nightmare of creating Supremes would conclude with the candidates fleeing?

Or choosing the easy way out?

Assuming they chose to join Azarax, they would be submitting to a supreme Will and not challenging it... that to me counts as a failure.

If they simply kill the Mason, would it be so simple to kill a Supreme in the center of their domain?
Sunny and Nephis faced tired and weakened Supremes and were still defeated without causing significant damage, can you imagine these seven succeeding in this mission?

As far as I remember, the war maiden was defeated and the city destroyed, but the cost was so great that Azarax couldn't keep his domain united after that, so destroying the city wouldn't count as changing the original destiny.

i think killing mason is indeed a valid alternative. Its not fleeing if they would have joined hands with Azarax or helped him.

Though that is only possible if the crux of this nightmare is to either safe the city or destroy.

I am pretty sure joining hands with Azarax will have its own downsides like u need to submit to him and hence becoming his thrall, and we have all seen Azarax treats his thralls as tool only

In every Nightmare it is said that to win they just have to resolve the central conflict of the Nightmare. G3 has said multiple times that there are many ways to resolve the conflict, to include just sitting it out. Sunny has mused that they could just wait it out and the Nightmare would resolve itself even if they do nothing, but doing so would leave a bad taste on his mouth (or something like that). Yeah, just hiding out would not be a satisfying conclusion to the Nightmare, but it is a valid one. And given that the clash with the War Maiden was what broke Azarax, siding with him, or even just not intervening so he crushes the Mason, would probably earn a very good rating from the Spell because it diverges from what happened to a significant degree

But does this apply to a nightmare that will create supreme beings?

Because it has already been said that the fifth nightmare is different, since its objective is to create a lesser deity, and I believe the same applies to the fourth and sixth nightmares.

Sunny could have done nothing in the nightmare of the chained islands, but that's because Mordred was doing the work.

The nightmare of Ariel's tomb, however, would never be solved alone; the first time the cohort failed, and in subsequent attempts the nightmare was altered by the Mad Prince and by Torment.

So, without wanting to deny what the author himself stated, I think what he says only applies to the initial nightmares.

In the Chained Isles nightmare they could have all done nothing and the nightmare would have resolved because, one way or another, Noctis was going to free Hope. Them choosing to support Noctis simply accelerated things. Same with Tamar's 2nd nightmare in Mictlan, the nightmare would have resolved itself eventually and them picking a side hastened it.

With the Tomb of Ariel, there's no real telling if it would have resolved itself because there were so many non-standard things happening (like the 13 million challengers from the twilight sea, or the 6 plagues). We have no idea what the original nightmare looked like, so there's just no way to tell.

The fundamental difference between nightmares 2-3 and 4 that I see are that in 2 and 3 they took the place of semi-random people, whereas in this 4th nightmare they've taken the role of pivotal characters. Ironically, since they are key players in the 4th nightmare, the cohort doing nothing would actually have a larger impact on altering the original outcome of the event.
