    I kind of expected this considering Sunny's (foreshadowing) conversation with Effie in the previous arc.
    Here's the justification given for his decision which very much mirrors what Effie told him before they headed to the Palace of Imagination:
    He was choosing duty over freedom, trust over independence, responsibility over self-interest.

      People will bitch for anything. This is literally the biggest moment for Sunny in terms of his development. Giving up his " selfish " desire for freedom for something other than himself.

        it reminds me when Aang asked Yangchen for advice in Avatar the Last Airbender.

        She said

        "This isn't about you. This is about the World."

        Sunny is Aang in this situation where he detached himself from the world to achieve spiritual enlightenment (Aang) or freedom

        "But the Avatar can never do it, because your sole duty is TO the World. Here's my wisdom for you. Selfless duty calls you to sacrifice your own spiritual needs and do whatever it takes to protect the World"

        Sunny has to get his fate back and it is sad because it's no longer about him. He has a duty as a Sovereign and one of the rulers of humanity. Although he lost the chain connecting him to the world and found freedom in it, he is now bound by the chains of protecting humanity and must do whatever it takes to ensure that happens, which is by putting back the chain of being fated again.

        I find this really poetic and beautiful writing.

        Also watch the actual clip, and you can REALLY understand how Sunny is feeling this turmoil through Aang
