      I think the Heart of Darkness was evolving into Titanhood, that's why it seemed lazy and didn't actively search for prey. Just like how the Crimson Terror was, allowing Nephis to slay it as a Sleeper. If it finished evolving while the convoy was still in the tunnel... Welp.
