I don't think another level 3 gate would open otherwise I don't think the civilians will survive. And taking them all to shelter feels like a great plan for Sunny's character progression.

Character development in a novel is the process of showing how a character changes (or resists change) over the course of the story. It’s what makes characters feel alive, believable, and engaging rather than flat stereotypes

          1. Repetition without growth = no real development

If the MC already established that they are willing to save people, then saving more people in the same way does not count as new development.

It just reinforces what the reader already knows: “this is the kind of person they are.”

So you are saying Sunny is already a leader so him leading people now is not a character development? When was the last time he led people again?

I can *lead*(take)my friends to my house.

I get that he has oceanic PTSD, but surely cutting down travel time to a fifth of what they're currently suffering would lessen the odds of something going f#cky wucky. Traversing the mountains seems like a very poor idea when it means much more time spent waiting for Fated to ruin his life.

It's not only the PTSD. It's because shores are dangerous as hell. It's military procedure to avoid them unless in very compact convoys with very strong troops. The chance of encountering dangerous foes there is several-fold the chance in the mountains. Plus you are pretty much an open target, no coverage, no place to hide, very easy to spot.
In the mountains it's a pain to travel, but with Sunny's vision, he can more or less avoid great part of dangers and find proper paths.

theres a 90% chance they encounter a corrupted creature, and its most likely stronger than a demon at the least, not to mention the sea nc’s are much more dangerous and scary than their land counterparts

Sunny is oddly suited to be a leader and yet completely inappropriate as a choice of one for this situation. The dichotomy is fun to read.

Crass attitude and general demeanor. He is simultaneously incredibly reflective yet still nuanced in his somewhat cynical views. He is a walking contradiction of thought and action yet his skillset is perfect for a leader. The more I consider it, the less inappropriate I consider it as all his traits he's displaying is necessary in a good leader.

He has everything to be a leader but their moral. If push came to shove, I'm quite sure Sunny would ditch burdens (weak people), which makes him a very dangerous leader.

Plus his utmost belief is individual freedom and each caring for their own fate; reason why he refuses to leave his to someone's else whims.

If it were done quickly, if the abomination could trammel up the consequence, and catch, with his surcease, his own death, that but this blow might be the be-all and the end-all here.
But here, upon this bank and shoal of time, we'd jump the life to come. But in these cases we still have judgment here — that we but teach bloody instructions, which, being taught, return to plague the inventor. This even-handed justice commends the ingredients of our poisoned chalice to our own lips. Strong both against the deed; then, as his host, who should against his murderer shut the door, not bear the knife myself. Besides this, we have borne our faculties so meek, have been so clear in this great office, that these abominations will plead like angels, trumpet-tongued, against the deep damnation of our taking-off; and vengeance, like a naked newborn babe striding the blast, or heaven's cherubim horsed upon the sightless couriers of the air, shall blow the horrid deed in every eye. I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself and falls on the other. But, screw your courage to the sticking place and we'll not fail.
