    Why don't they try do something with the flying creatures, such as findig a way of using them as transport

    This is probably a illusion or a fake reality. Sunny was the only person who saw where the beast put the crystal. The crystal not being there no matter how hard he looked, could be because the person/creature Casting this fake reality, didn't know about it. Therefore it wouldn't be in the illusion.
