Three years ago, the animals and plants on Earth underwent crazy and unexplainable changes that included transformations, reversions, and the addition of otherworldly species. And it was the start of a brand-new type of profession in the new generation of humanity — Monster Trainers, people who specialized in taming monsters.

On his 18th birthday, the story’s protagonist, Gao Peng, suddenly received the ability to see the attribute data frame of monsters. With his ability, he aspired to become the strongest monster trainer that ever lived while looking for a method to revive his parents! Collapse

I finished reading through all of it and I all can say is that it’s fine. My biggest gripe with this novel is that the premise of the novel is about monsters, but some of my the mc’s monsters the he owns are either forgotten or their power are way below the normal ones we see. Also the fights just get worse as it progresses through the novel, and some fights just ends in one or two sentences. Also sometimes it gets confusing where it cuts to a different scene after a fight. The other complaint I have is that the ending was rushed, but whatever.

'aight, so after reading 95 chapters of this, my assessment is...

uh, it's okay? reader I'd liken it to Lays Yoghurt and Herb, except it's more of a knock-off Lays with musty yoghurt and the herbs may as well be leaves yanked off a tree. Decently interesting with an average TL - likely just edited MTL - and a cautious, reasonable MC, my only problem is that it's just...

Boring. I don't know if it's the character who lack personality (at least as far carrying the book goes) or the writing itself (which is bland and unadorned, with the translation being of no benefit in that regard; a lot of the combat paragraphs are just a dull slob to read through) but I just got really, really bored by this. frost

There aren't any fascinatingly new ideas for the monster taming genre, neither are their stellar characters or writing or fascinating beasts. Everything is just shallow, from the world to the system. The beasts have personality, moreso than some novels, but not enough to keep me entertained enough to read for that alone. It reads like a less charming version of the initial chapters of Unscientific Beast Taming.

Which is still the pinnacle of the genre, if only it's translation hadn't gone so horrifically awry. 4 Unfortunately I have yet to find a beast-taming novel as entertaining as that one.

As it is, this is a solid 6.4/10 in terms of webnovels; nothing particularly interesting or captivating, but nothing offensive either. welldone My greatest complaint is just the lack of depth to the story and the fact that none of the characters really interest me. Stories like this live and breathe either a good world, good ideas or good characters, and this is sub-par in the first, meh in the second, and just above average in the third. bond

TLDR: bland with no points that really stick out, with a lack of world-building and interesting characters; the only thing to grip you here is the monster taming aspect, and even that's just okay at best. bow

    Happy reading, fellow daoists.

To those concerned with "nationalism", I don't think there's a need to be concerned about it. NO ONE here becomes an idiot just because they aren't Chinese. There's no cartoon villain from Japan/US either. There's no blondie that just suddenly acts like a Chinese to please the MC as she fits into a "perfect woman" mold. Nope. Everything here is fairly reasonable.

There's parts of the stories where China is succeeding, but it'd make sense if a Chinese somehow gets a golden finger, then yeah, of course they're gonna succeed where others fail. But there's no gloating or anything, everything is pretty logical.

    AS FOR THE STORY OVERALL

well the question is, "what makes this different from others?" I should say there are 2 reasons that make this different.

    1.) The MC
So the MC IS typical BUT he's not offensive in any way. He's got his own personality which is nice and he's not gung ho about raging against the heavens either. He doesn't really have a development arc but at least he's not (that) arrogant to the point where he's making enemies left and right just because he would bluster against anyone that looks at him wrong.

2.) The pets have their own likable personalities.
Yep, this is the real hook. The pets are pretty fun and likable, no pet gets left behind too though some have more "screen time" than others. They don't really have arcs themselves, well some of them do but those don't really add any depth to their characters but for the most part, the pets are just big dorks.

Everything else is okay, so you can think of it this way, if everything is okay, that's 5/10 BUT with the 2 reasons you can think of it as 7 to 8/10.

It's a decent read, the ending is rushed but it's okay since it was running out of gas at that point anyway.

I say give this a try, it's a pretty chill read. Should be on your "top 5 to read list". You might end up liking it.

All in all a pretty decent novel. I still haven't completed it but it was good as far as i have read. Only thing i have a small problem with is that our mc is too passive during battles. He is basically mute during almost all battles and his familiars do the work. This is okay if the enemy is much weaker than the mc(which they generally are). But there are times his familiars almost die but mc does nothing and thinks i guess.

I droped that novel after the tree established a church. That's the thing with western novels nowadays. Every MC has god-complex and wants to establish a religion around himself. Perhaps it is a reflection of the author's narcissism, perhaps not but it seems to be a common pattern. Even the Chinese and perhaps the Japanese too, are not so much like that, at least directly, even though it is somewhat a part of their culture as their religion has ancestor worship.

tbf, instead of generalizing it to a a 'country', it's really more accurate to say that the webnovel domain is popularized by arrogant, narcissistic MCs as a whole. It's what you get when you dwell into the wish fulfillment, power fantasy genre. I've found it less so on sites that are popular for better quality webnovels, but anything from Webnovel is likely to have an MC like that.

Admittedly that too is a generalization; not every arrogant or narccistic MC is bad, and neither does every book from Webnovel or every webnovel really have MCs like that, but it IS a bit of a common trend.
