Liu Feng wanted to be a cultivator who defied the heavens, surpassed all limits, and had jade-skinned beauties clamoring around him. He wanted to fight anyone who got in his way, and shatter the arrogance of those young masters!

Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I'm stuck here.

Jade-like beauties? No thanks, I have an awesome magical energy to study.

Young masters? Life and death battles? No, I would rather read some books on cultivation, and master some techniques that clearly don't obey the laws of physics.

There is a junior who has trash talent but suddenly started advancing by leaps and bounds? And he seems to be favored by the heavens themselves? Yeah, that has nothing to do with me.

Unfortunately not, this one's an outlier among western cultivation novels tbh.

This book is quite good and interesting. It reminds of other novels like "unintended cultivator" "way of choices", and "unintended immortality". Meaning, it is a slow paced lazy novel yet actually written well, plausibility, interesting characters, and a world that is slowly opening up and how it interacts with cultivators and the MC.

The MC is not a "talented" person, being average in his spiritual roots. The MC loves to read, but his mind is nimble enough to try things a little differently. It results in very good control of his qi, shoring up weakness, and excellent techniques that others wouldn't think of. He is seen by others as a "strategist" by pretty much all who meet him - another "main" character, his clan, and even city lords. MC is more than capable of handling less well trained and practiced people, such as his foundation level grandfather. But he is not "OP" in the traditional sense, he simply is not the MC of "martial god asura" and the like.

Don't look at this for a troublemaker MC who gets in fights for existing. It's not that kind of novel, it is about dialogue, exploration and a simple, well told story. But i've read only 226 chaps of it. Not a harem, not a "you're so great I'll follow you", but a simple bookworm who is adapting to a new world. Think Han Li of a "record of a mortal's journey...." Weak, untalented, but persistent.

The fact that the author confuses turtles and tortoises inclines one to believe that he put little effort into researching and planning the story.

It makes little sense that the Song Clan with its many healers, including the dozen written as present in chapter 113 do not have the capacity to simultaneously treat even 2 patients, or at least stabilize one. Song Song, a leading female character, kills the patient they were treating to coerce healers to treat Liu Feng which makes little sense.

Something interesting could have come out if the author had not decided to make another cliché, where all events should take place around the MC. Absolutely wasted potential. There was no reason to associate MS with this mentally unstable girl, whom any sane person would walk 5 kilometers to save his life. It’s especially stupid that the author tries to explain this with a feeling of gratitude and Loyalty. Well, half of the problems that MС went through happened because of this girl.I see no reason to read, because there is nothing that would catch my attention

I quite enjoy this novel. This isn't average cultivation novel where MC is born with divine-god-supreme-dragon bloodlines, MC actually has to use his brain to navigate different situations and his cultivation talent is just average too. It's nice that MC isn't a edgy moron either, nice change of pace.

Only thing that slightly irked me was overt way of making fun of xianxia cliches.

This story has no interesting hook to get you to start reading this story, and this disinterest continues till chapter 23 where I left for now. The chapters are long which is why I am giving a review so early on and the fact that there is only 95 chapters so far.

The only interesting thing is that the MC really loves the martial arts and the premise I presumed was that he will be more of a scientist and will break down the techniques and have a deeper understanding than anyone else in the cultivation world. But till chapter 23 I have not seen anything of that sort he is more like a child who found a new toy and he isn’t using it any different from everyone else. However because it is something new to him he trains a lot more than the other from what we have read so far. I like a training maniac MC but I would have liked it better if we saw more of his tough process during training, like “why is it like this” or “how can i make it work better for me” but I think he will start doing this in the future IDK I hope so because so far he is just going through the motion. He is essentially just like an average person who just has more enthusiasm he is not an underdog who has to fight for his opportunities, he is not talented enough to bring about interesting new techniques in fact the comedy here is that he is doing his best to NOT get involved with these clichés. idk about you but I am not here to read about what an average person would do were they transmigrated or reincarnated in a cultivation world.

All in all this is a below average cultivation novel. If you are interested in reading a western depiction of the cultivation genre I recommend “lightning is the only way”

Plot starts to pick a bit later than usual but like a lot of other people said it's pretty info heavy at first. Protagonist is probably not going to be the strongest now or probably ever, so if that's what you're looking for then this isn't for you. It's more of a look into how a bookworm/regular guy would survive in a cultivation world with the goal of seeing and learning everything he can.
