This is top tier xianxia. Before this, I recommend Coiling Dragon Ring Saga for newbies as even though it's not the best, it's "classic" cultivation story and is a decent enough introduction. But now, I recommend this, the only bad part about this is that it's not yet complete.

I wouldn't exactly recommend this to veteran readers tho, but if you do plan to read it, it shouldn't be low in your priority, maybe mid or part of the next 3 books you'll read.

is Coiling Dragon really that good? I started with AWE and when I tried to get into Coiling Dragon a couple months after being into the genre, I just couldn't.

Coiling isn't good, it isn't bad either. I think the reason why it's recommended and respected is because it's one of the first titles to get translated. It's also one of the first that set a trend basically. If you've watched Nausicaa (really old Hayao Miyazaki film) it's the same logic, that film isn't good or bad (well, it's pretty decent) but that's because a lot of films already refined the formula that Nausicaa created and improved on it.

TL;DR: Coiling dragon is decent and you gotta give it props for being old but still holding up better than a lot of other xianxia. There's also the fact that it's a decent execution of the xianxia formula that it's a good enough recommendation for those who are just starting to read xianxia web novels.

Excellently written, you can tell it's not a translated novel. What I like most about this novel is the character development and meaningful interactions between the MC and other characters. In many CN translated novels all side characters are just foils to show the MC's excellence, but here, they really do stand out and have relevance.

This isn't an OP face-slap type of novel, it's almost basically coming-of-age cultivation novel so far.

starts out really cool but later on turns meh. his love interest right now is really weird and unfounded. the biggest issue i have is that he really doesnt act like his age suggests and is weirdly more naive after the big event happens. the world also doesnt seem to be that deep. another generic existential crisis in a fight against "demons" where the demons are fewer in numbers but have higher talent. an issue that isnt related to the plot is release rate and overal plot progression. as it is right now it will take a least a few years for the story to finish.

Not as good as other reviews says about this novel.
Sure, this can be refreshing if you read too much cliche Chinese xianxias.
But if you've read other xianxia novels written in English, you'll know what I mean.
This novel is the same with unnecessarily long-winded dialogues and info dumps, not show don't tell but just show all the way with chapters long povs.
I may be too biased ot harsh on this one but this is not a cn cookie cutter stories so I had so much expectations.
    Oh well, I'm quite disappointed.

Ok I'll be the second to make a proper review, though this is only my initial review of 70 chapters in hopes I can be the reason someone picks up this novel cause spoiler alert this is really great so far. The setting is nothing special which is honestly a good thing, since this is a self proclaimed cliche xianxia novel one wouldn't want this being too complex, and this benefits from it's simplicity. The author does a fantastic job writing children, they'll call each other buttheads and don't have the mental maturity adults have. They write adults well, from the MC's father, a man with secrets but now a humble and generous man, the MC's master, a sick and dying man that comes to be akin to a grandfather figure, and a myriad of other complex characters. One of the aspects I appreciate most about this novel so far is the character Xiao Nan, who is my favorite character so far, he's the perfect example of a good male role model to help guide the childish MC. Fight scenes are quite descriptive and the author does a good job creating a mental image in one's mind of how the fights are going, for example describing how two people in a fight punched throats, the liver, uppercuts and the brain shake that'll cause someone, etc. There hasn't been any sort of boring info dumps and world building has been very natural, mentioning names here and there and giving them sort of importance. Another great part of this novel is the occasional interlude chapter which are usually insights into other characters thought processes and also more info and backstory, which adds a lot to the story. For now this is a 8-9/10 for me, I'm ready for more arcs!

Don't misunderstand though, the first girl is loveable, and they do develop some actual romance between them before spoilers happen, I'll just say she's not a cold beauty for now, that's just what she cultivates, also they're kids so it's wholesome vibes

Not really, they don't stray from hard topics like death and killing, it's a early plot point but a realistic one. The MC will never be a heartless monster and will never be comfortable killing but he won't hesitate if he has to. If you expect it be a ruthless thing you're missing the good points of this novel, which I left a review about.

REVIEWED AT: Chapter 50: Before it Begins
    BY DocteurNS10/02/2020 12:38:30
    As of chapter 50:

Don't let the self-deprecating title or the generic synopsis fool you. This is a great fiction. The story flows smoothly. The characters are likeable and fully fleshed out. The execution is masterful (and I don't use that word lightly).

At 550+ pages there is still no harem in sight. So no rushing and failing there like so many lesser fictions do.

"A Very Cliche Xianxia Harem Story" is only "cliché" if cliché means similar to the great Xianxias, the likes of Stellar Transformations (but with a more likeable cast, in my smug and snobbish opinion).

I don't want to hype it too much but– f*ck it. I'm hyping it. This a superb fiction, and if it delivers on what has been hinted so far, it's going to be one of my all time favourites. It deserves more love, so read it.

I haven't noticed much grammar issues, but I ain't an authority on the subject.

The only "negative" point, as pointed out in other reviews, is the slow release rate. But seeing as the author has been posting steadily for more than 25 months, instead of burning themselves out in three weeks with daily releases as seemed the trend these days, I'm willing to call this a positive instead.

Review amendment: With all that said, if you're looking for a fast and brutal power hike with a self-righteous OP lead and lots of arrogant bad guys being pummelled for not seeing Mount Tai... then this is not it, and you're probably going to get bored.

Note: I know giving almost 5 stars in every category seems like an exaggeration. But those are my sincere thoughts.

At the end of the long first arc (chapter 31), the author asked in a bottom note "What worked and what didn't work for you in this arc?" And thinking about it, I found I couldn't think of a single genuine bad point, nothing I thought didn't work, and nothing I could have done better.

Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe if I re-read it I'll have another opinion. But at this moment, I'm in love.
