Chapter 809: A Warning

After Yang Haoran received the information divulged by Vice-Captain Zhou from Old Master Wu, he did not leave the villa. Instead, he discussed countermeasures with Bai Xue and Old Master Wu.

Before they could finalize a plan, Vice-Captain Zhou drove to the villa's exterior and deliberately emitted a slight power fluctuation.

The appearance of this power fluctuation naturally drew the attention of Yang Haoran and the others inside the villa.

Yang Haoran's expression remained calm, showing no significant reaction. Old Master Wu, however, furrowed his brow slightly, lost in thought. Bai Xue, upon sensing this power fluctuation, subtly changed her expression and immediately spoke to Yang Haoran.

"They won't be coming to our door so soon, will they?"

The "they" Bai Xue referred to were, naturally, the two Demon Hunters.

"You needn't panic. The power fluctuation emanating from this person is not Star Spirit Power, so this person is not a Demon Hunter."

Yang Haoran said, a faint smile on his face, to Bai Xue.

"Who said I was panicking? Why would I panic with you here? Besides, even if the person isn't a Demon Hunter, couldn't they be a helper sent by the Demon Hunters?"

Bai Xue forced out her retort. Yang Haoran merely chuckled in response, then nodded at Bai Xue.

"What you said isn't entirely without reason. Whether that fellow outside is a helper sent by the two Demon Hunters, that's truly hard to say."

No sooner had Yang Haoran's words fallen than a gust of Yin wind swept across the study door. Xiujuan's figure appeared outside the study.

"Who is outside the barrier?"

Yang Haoran asked Xiujuan, pulling a cigarette from the pack on the table.

"Reporting, Emissary, it's Spirit Police Vice-Captain Zhou."

Xiujuan responded respectfully. These words caused a change in expression for both Bai Xue and Old Master Wu, and Yang Haoran's motion of lighting his cigarette also paused slightly.

"Vice-Captain Zhou. . ."

Yang Haoran mumbled, biting on the cigarette filter. His eyebrow twitched slightly, a look of deep thought on his face.

"For Vice-Captain Zhou to come here at this time, is there something he hasn't made clear to me yet?"

Old Master Wu pondered for a moment, then voiced his own conjecture.

"That's possible, but it's also possible he's here representing the Administrative Courtyard, with the aim of capturing me. However, I don't think it's very likely he would actually act against me."

Bai Xue said. She knew Vice-Captain Zhou better than anyone present. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say they were comrades who had faced life and death together. He valued loyalty greatly, and she had saved Vice-Captain Zhou several times, so she didn't believe he would make a move against her.

Due to the Administrative Chief's order, it was indeed possible that Vice-Captain Zhou would come to arrest her on behalf of the Administrative Courtyard. But in her opinion, Vice-Captain Zhou would merely be going through the motions; not only would he not truly act against her, he would even go easy on her.

"Please invite him in first."

Yang Haoran did not voice his own conjectures, instead speaking directly to Xiujuan.

Upon receiving the order, Xiujuan's body, enveloped in a surge of Yin Qi, swept forth a gust of Yin wind and hurried towards the villa's main gate.

Yang Haoran had only taken a few puffs of his cigarette when Vice-Captain Zhou, led by Xiujuan, arrived in Yang Haoran's study.

At a normal walking pace, it would take more than just a few cigarettes to get from the villa's main gate to Yang Haoran's study. Yet, in the mere time it took to smoke a few puffs, Vice-Captain Zhou had already reached Yang Haoran's study. From this, it was clear he was in a great hurry, which was why his speed was so swift.

"Xiujuan, go about your business. Remember to constantly watch for any activity outside. If anything happens, report to me immediately."

After Xiujuan received her order and withdrew, Yang Haoran's gaze fell upon Vice-Captain Zhou. Before he could even greet Vice-Captain Zhou, the latter, looking anxious, spoke up first.

"Your current situation is very dangerous. The two Demon Hunters who came to Lecheng this time are both Three-Star Demon Hunters!"

Yang Haoran, who had originally worn a faint smile, instantly stiffened upon hearing Vice-Captain Zhou's words!

Upon hearing this, Old Master Wu and Bai Xue's expressions both changed dramatically at the same time, their faces revealing looks of astonishment.

The drastic change in their expressions was because they both knew what a Three-Star Demon Hunter implied.

Yang Haoran, of course, was no exception; otherwise, the smile on his face wouldn't have suddenly frozen.

The information Old Master Wu brought back hadn't mentioned the strength of the two Demon Hunters, so before Vice-Captain Zhou spoke, he had been completely unaware of their power. Now, with Vice-Captain Zhou immediately telling him that both Demon Hunters were Three-Star Demon Hunters, how could he not be surprised?

However, Yang Haoran's reaction was swift. He only paused for a moment, then quickly recovered.

"Vice-Captain Zhou, don't rush. Sit down and speak slowly."

Yang Haoran's smile returned as he spoke to Vice-Captain Zhou.

"Oh, come on, the situation is urgent! Where do I find the time to sit down and speak slowly?"

Vice-Captain Zhou was utterly speechless at Yang Haoran's composure. He was practically frantic internally, yet Yang Haoran could still smile.

He did not sit down and speak slowly as Yang Haoran suggested. Instead, he immediately conveyed everything he knew to Yang Haoran and the other two.

Due to his anxiety, Vice-Captain Zhou's explanation was somewhat jumbled, but Yang Haoran and the two others listened carefully. After his narration, they mentally sorted through it and understood the full meaning of his words.

Everything Vice-Captain Zhou spoke of was, of course, information he had obtained from the Administrative Chief. He held nothing back, informing the three of everything he knew, including the instructions the Administrative Chief had given him just before he left the Administrative Courtyard.

After listening to Vice-Captain Zhou's narration, both Yang Haoran and Old Master Wu were deep in thought, neither speaking. Bai Xue's reaction, however, was markedly different from theirs.

The usual alluring smile had vanished from Bai Xue's face. Her expression was cold, and her eyes had, at some unknown point, transformed into a pair of snake eyes. Within these snake eyes, besides a frigid killing intent, there was also an intense rage.

"That old geezer! All these years, I've racked up so many merits, sacrificed so much, yet he shows no gratitude, just sells me out just like that!"

The enraged voice shattered the silence in the study. A potent killing intent permeated the entire room, and this intent naturally emanated from Bai Xue.

When she had learned that the Administrative Courtyard intended to act against her, she was already quite displeased. After all, she had always abided by the rules and indeed contributed significantly to Lecheng's stability over the years. For the Administrative Courtyard not only to show no gratitude but also to move against her, how could she possibly be happy?

However, though she had been furious at the time, her rage hadn't reached this level yet. She had thought perhaps the two Demon Hunters had sensed her presence in advance and thus coerced the Administrative Courtyard into taking action against her.

But now, having heard Vice-Captain Zhou's narration, she discovered that the truth was not as she had imagined at all. The two Demon Hunters had not known of her existence beforehand; they had simply inquired of the Administrative Chief whether there were any demons in Lecheng, and the Administrative Chief had immediately used her as a shield. This instantly ignited her fury like oil poured on fire, making it blaze with unprecedented intensity.

After Bai Xue's words fell, she turned her gaze to Vice-Captain Zhou and coldly warned him.

"Vice-Captain Zhou, you and I have been comrades for several years now, and we've always gotten along well. So, let me give you a piece of advice: you'd best quit this life-threatening job and stay far away from that old geezer. Otherwise, you'll definitely become the next me."

Vice-Captain Zhou shook his head with a bitter smile, his face full of helplessness.

"Sister Bai Xue, you don't need to remind me. The Administrative Chief himself told me that if necessary, whether it's me, Captain Luo, or even he himself, we could all become sacrifices."

Upon hearing this, Bai Xue's eyes narrowed slightly, the coldness on her face not dissipating because of Vice-Captain Zhou's words.

"If he's said that, and you still risk your life for him, then it's not just foolishness; it's something more!"

Vice-Captain Zhou again shook his head with a bitter smile, as if not agreeing with Bai Xue's statement, or perhaps shaking his head due to the helplessness in his heart.

"I have my own beliefs, and things I want to protect. I'm not risking my life for him, but for my own faith, for the sake of upholding my convictions. It's precisely because of this that I've remained in the Spirit Police all this time. Even with the world in chaos now, I've never once thought of leaving the Spirit Police."
