Chapter 786: Soul Interrogation
The woman’s brows were tightly furrowed. She seemed to be pondering whether Yang Haoran’s words were true or false, so she didn’t respond.
Yang Haoran paid her no mind. After a slight pause, he continued to speak.
"Xu Meijing and I were no match for Zhang Changchun and his son; we were quickly vanquished. We couldn't find an opportunity to escape. I don't know what Xu Meijing was thinking at the time, but I was indeed despairing, believing that I was certainly going to die this time. It was at this moment that that expert appeared."
Seeing that no one intended to interrupt him, Yang Haoran, maintaining a serious expression, continued to spin his tale.
"Initially, I didn't have high hopes for this expert, thinking he was no match for Zhang Changchun and his son. Zhang Changchun's father was simply too powerful, an entity nearing the level of a Ghost King. Such ghostly entities are not something anyone can handle, and the power this expert initially displayed was limited; going head-to-head with Zhang Changchun and his son would have been absolute suicide. However, the outcome greatly exceeded my expectations. This expert had actually hidden his strength. After unleashing his full power, he managed to turn the tide, not only saving Xu Meijing and me but also successfully destroying Zhang Changchun and his son, making them Soul Transformation."
Speaking of which, he seemed to suddenly remember something and continued.
"Oh right, due to the intense battle between the two sides at the time, there was even a chase, fighting from one place to another. If you were to expand your search in that mountain forest, you would definitely find the area where their second major battle took place, proving that what I said is true."
Having said this, Yang Haoran once again swept his gaze over the avengers present. Although these people didn't speak, their expressions varied. Some seemed to believe Yang Haoran, some seemed to be pondering the truthfulness of Yang Haoran's nonsense, and others simply didn't believe Yang Haoran's nonsense at all.
"Everyone, although I don't know how much you truly understand about this matter, I can assure you that the explanation I'm giving you today is the genuine version, not a rumor. As for whether you believe it or not, that's up to you."
Having said all that needed to be said, Yang Haoran remained silent. He looked at the few people, waiting for their response.
"Presumably, you must be Undertaker Yang of the Lecheng Underworld Division."
The one who spoke was still the woman whose husband had died.
"My name is Yang Haoran. The 'Yang' from 'wood' and 'easy,' and the 'Haoran' from 'vast righteousness. ' Sister, you can call me Haoran, or Little Yang. As for being an 'Undertaker,' I wouldn't dare presume."
Yang Haoran replied to the woman with a humble smile on his face and a gentle tone.
Xu Meijing, standing nearby, had long been amused by Yang Haoran's nonsense. However, constrained by the situation, she dared not show her true emotions, only suppressing the urge to laugh. But upon hearing Yang Haoran's reply to the woman, she truly couldn't hold back the impulse to laugh, and a chuckle escaped her lips.
Her sudden laugh broke the tense atmosphere, and everyone's gaze shifted from Yang Haoran to her.
Xu Meijing knew something was amiss, but her reaction was quick enough. She didn't wipe the smile from her face, because in her opinion, that would be like "burying one's head in the sand. " Her approach was simple: with the fastest speed, she immediately transformed her smile into a sneer, then pointed the spearhead at Yang Haoran.
"Hehe, Undertaker Yang is truly quite humble."
Although these words pointed the spearhead at Yang Haoran, Yang Haoran understood why Xu Meijing did this. Of course, he wouldn't expose Xu Meijing; he just smiled at her, everything left unsaid.
Although the others present didn't quite understand what these two Underworld Officials were up to, they only glanced at Xu Meijing before withdrawing their gazes. Some looked at Yang Haoran, while others looked at the woman who had spoken.
They reacted this way because their focus at the moment wasn't on Xu Meijing at all. As for why Xu Meijing suddenly spoke up to mock Yang Haoran, they naturally couldn't be bothered to ask.
"Undertaker Yang, I wonder if I might ask you a question."
After the woman's gaze fell back on Yang Haoran, she asked again.
"Sister, you're too polite. Feel free to ask anything you wish."
Yang Haoran replied with a smile, his expression benevolent.
"Have you ever had a husband die?"
Yang Haoran's smile stiffened slightly. He had never dreamed that the woman would suddenly ask him such a question.
After a brief moment of stunned silence, Yang Haoran recovered, a smile returning to his face.
"Sister, you're joking. I don't even have a boyfriend, so where would a husband come from?"
These words came out of Yang Haoran's mouth in a calm tone, his expression natural, not showing an ounce of awkwardness.
However, the woman frowned, clearly not having anticipated Yang Haoran's answer.
"You don't have a husband, and you haven't had a husband die, but I have. And my husband was already killed by the Zhang family. You said Zhang Changchun and his son were Soul Transformation. Fine, I believe you. But can this grievance simply be offset because Zhang Changchun and his son were Soul Transformation?"
Although Yang Haoran had assured those present that Zhang Changchun and his son were Soul Transformation, the woman's anger in her heart did not dissipate because of this.
"Sister, I understand your feelings. Because I was a direct party to this, and if my luck hadn't been good enough, my fate would have been no different from your husband's. However, misfortune shouldn't extend to family. The Zhang family now only has women, children, the sick, and the disabled left, and most of them are just children. Can you bear to lay a hand on these children? I also want to ask you a question, Sister: Do you have children?"
Yang Haoran's words, especially that last question, instantly stunned the woman. When she regained her composure, her brows furrowed, and her face became solemn as she pondered what was on her mind.
After a few breaths, the woman turned her gaze towards where the Zhang family members were, looking at the surviving children. Some clung to their mothers' thighs, some clutched their mothers' clothes, and others, due to their inner fear, hid in their mothers' arms. Although they expressed their inner emotions in different ways, in one aspect, they were all the same: their faces were filled with fear and unease.
They were young, some even still in swaddling clothes, yet they all seemed to have realized the coming disaster, knowing they were on the brink of death. Hence, they were terrified and uneasy, some even shedding tears.
The woman watched these children for a few seconds, a certain chord in her heart touched. She didn't speak, nor did she look at Yang Haoran again. Instead, she immediately tore open a spatial rift and departed, as if any later, she might change her mind.
The woman's actions stunned many of those present. She had been the most vocal among the avengers, yet now she was the first to leave.
Without the woman to lead the charge, the others exchanged glances, and for a moment, no one spoke.
Yang Haoran also remained silent, simply smiling as he watched these people, quietly waiting for their decision.
Xu Meijing stood beside Yang Haoran, also silent. Her helping the Zhang family against her will was entirely because of Yang Haoran. Now that Yang Haoran had taken over the matter, she naturally wouldn't interject. She believed Yang Haoran could handle it well.
"I don't have the habit of killing women and children. The Zhang family's grudge ends here. Anyway, Zhang Changchun and his son are Soul Transformation, and those involved in this matter have also been killed by us. I've considered this revenge for my friend. This whole situation was brought upon yourselves, Zhang family. If, in the future, you Zhang family seek trouble with me, I will always be ready. But at that time, don't blame me for being impolite; no one will be able to intercede and save you."
An old man spoke in a deep voice. He directed these words at the Zhang family members, but at the end, he glanced at Yang Haoran and Xu Meijing.
Yang Haoran smiled and nodded at him. He couldn't be bothered to care what the other party's glance meant. After all, in his eyes, this old man was no different from an ant. His smile and nod were merely out of politeness.
The old man didn't speak. Like the woman before him, he tore open a spatial rift and left.
Two people had left in such a short time, making it awkward for the others to say much more. Some left harsh words for the Zhang family, while others departed without leaving any threats at all, one after another.
After all the avengers had left, Yang Haoran finally turned his gaze to Zhang Li.
"I want to talk to you."
