Chapter 589: There is No Love in Life
Yang Haoran was deep in thought, digesting all the information he had obtained from the female ghost.
Given Yang Haoran's cautious nature, after receiving this information, he naturally wouldn't assume he understood the whole truth just by hearing it once. Sometimes ears can deceive, and so can eyes. Therefore, he had to break down this information and analyze it in depth, only then could he extract more valuable insights, deduce all possible scenarios, and finally, based on these deductions, weigh the pros and cons to understand what should and shouldn't be done.
The female ghost remained firmly clutched by the large black hand. She didn't dare disturb Yang Haoran, thus she made no sound. However, her mind raced, trying to conceive a way to escape.
Yet, in her current predicament, she racked her brains but couldn't devise a single method beneficial to her escape.
A moment later, Yang Haoran emerged from his contemplation, his gaze once again falling upon the female ghost, a faint smile gracing his lips.
"You're working for a Spirit Master; aren't you worried his Guardian Spirit will devour you? For his Guardian Spirit, a ghost like you is quite the tonic."
The female ghost was still trying to find a way to escape when Yang Haoran's sudden voice startled her.
With Yang Haoran having spoken, how could she dare to delay? She immediately replied, "Afraid? Of course, I'm afraid, but he won't make a move on me for now because I can still bring him more value."
In truth, there was one more thing the female ghost hadn't mentioned: it was common for Spirit Masters to summon nearby ghosts to work for them. Usually, a Spirit Master would not attack such ghosts; this was a principle, a rule, and most Spirit Masters abided by it.
Of course, there were also ruthless Spirit Masters who would openly disregard this so-called rule. To enhance their own power and that of their Guardian Spirits, they would even use their spiritual arts to summon nearby ghosts and forcibly devour them. Such extremists were disliked not only by other Spirit Masters but also by ghosts themselves.
However, the female ghost dared not utter these words in Yang Haoran's presence, for she knew that saying them would bring no benefit and might even anger Yang Haoran. If that were the case, why bother? She certainly didn't want to hasten her own Soul Transformation.
Yang Haoran nodded, chuckling, "That's true. The more chaos you create in Cloud River City, the greater his assistance. But have you ever considered a problem? Since you know some things you shouldn't, will he silence you?"
"I don't know, but I don't intend to go back and see him. While Cloud River City is in chaos, I just want to devour as many souls as possible to increase my strength. If things take a turn for the worse, I'll leave immediately," the female ghost said.
"If you were truly as cautious as you claim, how could you have fallen into my hands? " Yang Haoran asked with a smile.
At Yang Haoran's words, the female ghost immediately fell silent. If she hadn't currently been in Yang Haoran's hands, she would have started cursing him directly.
At this moment, her only regret was her own weakness. If she had been stronger than Yang Haoran, she would definitely have used the same methods to humiliate this Underworld agent thoroughly, and once she was done playing, she would kill Yang Haoran and then devour his soul.
But "if only" was just "if only"; it wasn't reality. The reality was that she was now in Yang Haoran's grasp and could only begrudgingly choose silence.
However, Yang Haoran's next words suddenly brought a surge of joy to her heart, like a person lost in darkness suddenly glimpsing a ray of light.
"Your information is very useful to me. Congratulations, you've won your gamble," Yang Haoran said with a smile.
The female ghost first froze, then, realizing the meaning, her heart swelled with immense joy. RAn0|BEs
Some people are like that: when facing despair, if someone suddenly offers them a glimmer of hope, they become immensely grateful to that person. Yet, they forget that the one who brought them despair is precisely the one who offered them hope.
The female ghost wasn't entirely like that, as she wouldn't feel immense gratitude towards Yang Haoran. However, at present, she was indeed in despair, and Yang Haoran's words offered her some hope, naturally filling her with both shock and excitement.
"You. . . you really plan to let me go? " the female ghost asked, her face filled with surprise.
In her understanding, once a ghostly entity fell into the hands of an Underworld agent, there was no precedent for it ever regaining freedom.
Ordinary Wánglíng were one thing; after all, they were relatively unaggressive and not heavily imbued with resentment, usually suffering no torment when falling into an Underworld agent's hands. But she was different. She was an Evil Spirit, a completely different matter from ordinary Wánglíng. A ghostly entity like her, falling into an Underworld agent's hands, absolutely would not have a good ending.
Yet, now Yang Haoran intended to let her leave. How could she not be surprised? How could she not be excited?
"When did I ever say I'd let you go? " Yang Haoran asked with a smile.
The excitement on the female ghost's face instantly froze. Yang Haoran's words were like suddenly being thrown into a reservoir in the dead of winter, freezing her thoroughly, inside and out.
"You damn bastard! Ah! ! ! You animal! ! !"
The female ghost's emotions instantly collapsed. With a ferocious expression, she screamed and roared at Yang Haoran, looking as if she wanted to flay him alive.
She was an Evil Spirit to begin with, heavily laden with Yin Qi and resentment. Without exception, such ghostly entities were exceedingly violent. Her prior demeanor, like a meek lamb before Yang Haoran, was because she understood her situation and dared not show her short temper. Though violent, she wasn't foolish; she didn't want to end up in Soul Transformation, so of course she curbed her temper.
Yet now, after Yang Haoran had extracted all the information from her, he was actually abandoning her, completely disregarding his previous implied promise. How could she not be enraged?
With the resentment in her heart exploding, how could she care about anything else? Since she couldn't escape the fate of Soul Transformation anyway, she might as well unleash all the resentment and fury in her heart without restraint, and not lose her reputation as an Evil Spirit!
"You inhuman Underworld Office lackey! May you die a horrible death! All you Underworld Office bastards are untrustworthy scumbags like you! What's it to you if I curse you today! I'm going to curse you! I'm even going to curse you! Curse your whole family, young and old! Curse you to have no sons! Curse you—"
Listening to the female ghost's furious curses, Yang Haoran initially didn't mind, smiling as he watched her vent and roar. But as her curses grew uglier, threatening to drag his entire eighteen generations of ancestors into it, he hastily spoke to stop her.
"Alright, alright, stop cursing. Although I never said I'd let you go, I did say I'd spare your life. I remember that."
The female ghost's curses abruptly ceased. She froze again, then, realizing the situation, her face showed no surprise, no excitement, but also none of the previous rage and ferocity.
The rapid emotional swings in such a short time left her feeling an indescribable discomfort. She stared expressionlessly at Yang Haoran, Yin Qi transforming into two lines of tears that streamed from her eyes, then she simply asked Yang Haoran one question in a deep voice.
"Big brother, what exactly do you want?"
Yang Haoran smiled, though his smile at this moment appeared somewhat awkward.
"I'm a man of my word; everyone who knows me can attest to that. Since I said I'd spare your life, I certainly won't break my promise. However, letting you go directly isn't possible. After all, it wouldn't quite conform to the rules, would it? And I'm a person who values principles, so. . ."
Yang Haoran let out an awkward laugh. He, who had always bluffed and spouted nonsense without ever feeling embarrassed, now found himself at a loss for words.
The female ghost didn't reply. Tears streaming down her face, an expression of utter despair, she simply stared blankly at Yang Haoran's performance. It seemed that whatever Yang Haoran said next, whatever tricks he pulled, she no longer cared.
"Well. . . how about you enter this Soul-Gathering Bead to rest for a bit? " Yang Haoran produced a Soul-Gathering Bead, asking in a tentative tone, seeking the female ghost's opinion.
"Let me go," the female ghost said in a deep voice.
Yang Haoran gave an awkward smile and waved his hand, dispersing the large black hand that held the female ghost. Without a word, without even sparing Yang Haoran a glance, the female ghost transformed into a wisp of Yin Qi and voluntarily surged towards the floating Soul-Gathering Bead. divdiv
