Chapter 544: A Satisfying Result

Pharmacist Feng Laotou’s death, while sudden for Yang Haoran, also filled him with a sense of regret. After all, Pharmacists were rare, and his death was truly a pity.

But what concerned him more was that Pharmacist Feng Laotou had died before he could claim his promised benefits, which left him feeling somewhat depressed.

Pharmacist Feng Laotou had previously promised him a satisfying result, and he never expected that the satisfying result Feng Laotou delivered would be like this.

Although Yang Haoran remained silent, the young girl was not foolish. She knew her master had died, which only made her cry even more sorrowfully.

The girl’s anguished sobs jolted Yang Haoran out of his shock. He glanced at the girl, opened his mouth as if to say something, but ultimately closed it again, saying nothing at all.

He felt that it was better to let the girl cry for now. Once her tears ran dry, she would stop. Stopping her immediately now would be largely meaningless and might only make her feel worse.

Yang Haoran shifted his gaze from the girl to the various items scattered on the ground beside Pharmacist Feng Laotou.

These were all collectibles from Pharmacist Feng Laotou's personal dimension. However, Yang Haoran couldn't tell if this dimension had burst open due to his death or if he had opened it himself in his final moments.

Among Pharmacist Feng Laotou’s collectibles were books and boxes, but mostly bottles and jars.

Yang Haoran had intended to inspect these collectibles, but seeing the girl sobbing heartbrokenly nearby, he suppressed that impulse.

Pharmacist Feng Laotou had just died, and for him to immediately examine the deceased's belongings felt somewhat inappropriate.

But to just leave without anything would be even more improper. He had put in a lot of effort this trip, and departing without gaining some benefit was not his style.

"Since Pharmacist Feng Laotou is dead, I might as well get some benefits from his apprentice. There must be things I need among these relics. Picking a few items in front of his apprentice shouldn't be too excessive," Yang Haoran mused to himself.

In his view, his actions were indeed not excessive. After all, he had rendered Pharmacist Feng Laotou a great service today, and Pharmacist Feng Laotou had also promised him satisfying benefits. Regardless of whether Pharmacist Feng Laotou's promise was heartfelt or merely a trick, Yang Haoran had taken it seriously.

Now that Pharmacist Feng Laotou had died before fulfilling his promise, taking a few items from his belongings was certainly not excessive. Other more ruthless individuals would undoubtedly have plundered all of Pharmacist Feng Laotou's collectibles. Compared to such people, Yang Haoran felt his own intentions were quite benevolent.

Of course, this was merely Yang Haoran’s own self-assessment. He believed his thoughts were neither wrong nor excessive. As for how others might view him if they knew of this, that remained unknown.

However, just as this thought emerged in his mind, he suddenly remembered something, and his expression subtly changed.

"Apprentice. . . apprentice. . . " These two words spun in his mind, and for a moment, he thought of a very important question.

The profusely sobbing young girl before him was Pharmacist Feng Laotou's apprentice, meaning the girl was also a Pharmacist.

Upon first entering the barrier, all his attention had been focused on its interior, as he worried about a trap, so he hadn't paid attention to this detail.

Subsequently, before he could even confirm if there was a trap inside the barrier, Pharmacist Feng Laotou suddenly died. All his attention was then drawn to Pharmacist Feng Laotou, and consumed by shock and helplessness, he once again overlooked the matter.

It wasn't until this very moment that he suddenly remembered, and his eyes lit up.

"Could the satisfying result Pharmacist Feng Laotou was supposed to give me be this disciple of his?"

Yang Haoran's guess wasn't conceited; it had a certain logic to it.

As a Pharmacist, Pharmacist Feng Laotou couldn't have been unaware of his own physical condition. He should have known better than anyone how long he had left to live. Bringing Yang Haoran here at the very end of his life likely meant he intended to entrust his apprentice to him.

Although Yang Haoran hadn't stated his exact purpose for coming today, he was certainly here to seek Dānyào. Pharmacist Feng Laotou couldn't have been ignorant of this.

Pharmacist Feng Laotou had promised Yang Haoran a satisfying result, but at the brink of death, he gave Yang Haoran nothing. Instead, he brought Yang Haoran here and let him meet his apprentice, perhaps indicating that if Yang Haoran needed any medicine, his apprentice could refine it.

With this thought, Yang Haoran felt increasingly certain that this was indeed Pharmacist Feng Laotou’s true intention.

However, one point still left him a bit confused: Pharmacist Feng Laotou brought him here; wasn't he afraid that Yang Haoran would harm his apprentice?

After a moment of thought, his confusion dissipated.

Pharmacist Feng Laotou knew he was dying. Regardless of whether Pharmacist Feng Laotou met his demands at the time, Yang Haoran would definitely have entered this barrier eventually. Not just him, but anyone would have been unable to ignore this barrier and would have found ways to enter and investigate.

At that point, he would still have discovered the girl living inside the barrier. If he harbored ill intentions, the girl's fate would have been no better.

Conversely, if he had no ill intentions towards the girl, then whether Pharmacist Feng Laotou brought him into the barrier or not, the girl would have been safe. By actively bringing him into the barrier, Pharmacist Feng Laotou could also demonstrate his sincerity.

In his opinion, Pharmacist Feng Laotou likely considered this when he led him into the barrier just before his death.

Of course, these were all Yang Haoran’s own analyses, but he felt his analysis must be correct; otherwise, Pharmacist Feng Laotou's actions before his death would be difficult to explain.

In Yang Haoran’s view, if the facts were as he analyzed, he could only say that Pharmacist Feng Laotou was a discerning man.

For beings like Pharmacists, even the most heinous villain would never easily kill them. Just like today, although the Black Talisman Master and the others attacked Pharmacist Feng Laotou fiercely, their primary goal was to capture him alive, not to kill him, which clearly demonstrated a Pharmacist's value.

Yang Haoran considered himself not a good person, but certainly not a ruthless arch-fiend. The girl had no grievances with him, so there was no need for him to kill her. Moreover, she was a Pharmacist; he would welcome her with open arms, so how could he possibly lay a hand on her?

Whether Pharmacist Feng Laotou’s true intention for bringing him here was as he had analyzed, Yang Haoran no longer dwelled on it. Because, he was convinced that this was the satisfying result Pharmacist Feng Laotou had given him.

And what he needed to do next was to maximize his gains!

He did not leave the barrier, nor did he disturb the girl. Instead, he stood quietly by her side, waiting. After an unknown amount of time, the girl stopped crying and knelt before Pharmacist Feng Laotou, staring blankly, utterly distraught.

Yang Haoran felt enough time had passed. He knelt down and gently patted the girl's shoulder.

The girl was startled by his action, flinching like a startled bird and scooting away from Yang Haoran on her knees, her face filled with panic.

"Heh, little sister, don't be afraid. I mean no harm," Yang Haoran said with a faint smile, explaining himself.

Seeing the girl's face simultaneously sad and wary, Yang Haoran continued to smile, "If I were going to harm you, I wouldn't have waited until now, would I?"

The girl seemed not to be very worldly. Hearing this, she thought for a moment and felt it was indeed true. The wariness on her face slowly receded.

However, she said nothing, merely shifting her gaze from Yang Haoran back to Pharmacist Feng Laotou.

Yang Haoran observed all of the girl's reactions. In this situation, he certainly wouldn't give up communicating with her just because she hadn't spoken.

He hadn't spoken before because he felt the time wasn't right, so he hadn't disturbed the girl. Now, however, he felt it was time to comfort her.

"I've also experienced the tragedy of having the most important person by my side suddenly leave me, and it was even worse than yours, so I truly understand how you're feeling right now."

At this point, Yang Haoran pulled out a cigarette, lit it, took a deep drag, and then continued speaking.

"The path of life must always be walked. One cannot stop moving forward because of someone's death. Live well, live even more wonderfully. Only then can you be worthy of your deceased loved ones, and also be responsible for your own life."
