Chapter 490: Obstruction
Judging from the scene of Ma Ling tearing through space at this moment, her strength, let alone compared to Yang Haoran, even when compared to Ye Zhiqiu, still showed a considerable gap.
However, compared to her time in Lecheng, Ma Ling's strength had indeed improved significantly; back then, she wouldn't have been capable of tearing through space.
But Yang Haoran didn't underestimate Ma Ling because of this. He had witnessed Ma Ling's methods back at Old Master Wu's villa; Ma Ling's greatest strength wasn't her inherent power, but her array arts.
When the two emerged from the spatial rift, they were already outside Huangniu Town. They had chosen a secluded corner to appear, so no one noticed how they had arrived there.
Some villagers in Huangniu Town had already been harmed by Corpse Ghouls, turning into Corpse Puppets, while others had been isolated by the police and evacuated from the town.
The police's official explanation was that rabid patients had appeared in Huangniu Town, and therefore, for the villagers' safety, they had to be evacuated from the town, only to return once the police had resolved the situation there.
Although the villagers didn't quite believe the explanation given by the police, they were deeply concerned for their personal safety. So, even if they distrusted the official story, they ultimately left Huangniu Town.
Villagers not infected with corpse toxin were safely evacuated by the police with the utmost speed, while all those who had been infected were trapped within Huangniu Town.
The appearance of Yang Haoran and Ma Ling attracted the attention of the vigilant police, and they were, naturally, intercepted.
"What are you two doing? ! Huangniu Town is very dangerous right now. Get out of here quickly!"
A police officer blocked their path and loudly warned them.
"We're here to help," Ma Ling said with a smile.
"You're here to help? " The police officer frowned, his expression puzzled, and he couldn't help but scrutinize the two of them a few more times.
Ma Ling was young and beautiful, appearing full of vitality, but no matter how he looked at her, with her slender arms and legs, she hardly seemed capable of offering much assistance.
As for Yang Haoran, his hands were in his pockets and his face was wreathed in smiles, giving him a genial look. However, his appearance was utterly unremarkable, making it equally difficult to associate him with any kind of master.
"Stop fooling around. If you don't want to lose your lives, leave immediately. Our police force will handle the situation inside," the officer said, frowning with a deep voice.
Ma Ling looked helpless, then said to the middle-aged police officer, "Officer sir, we were invited here by you. Didn't your superiors brief you?"
No sooner had Ma Ling's voice faded than a tremendous boom suddenly echoed from within Huangniu Town, causing the ground to tremble slightly.
The expressions of all the police officers present changed, and the villagers being evacuated also collectively turned their gaze towards Huangniu Town. Some villagers, already on the vehicles meant to transport them, couldn't help but rush off the cars after hearing the massive boom, looking towards Huangniu Town, the source of the sound.
"Such a huge commotion! Did they use some kind of cannon shell?"
"Isn't it just dealing with a few rabid patients? Why are they even using cannon shells?"
The evacuated villagers whispered amongst themselves, their hearts filled with both curiosity and trepidation.
"Don't waste time, leave immediately! If you're really that curious, how about I send you back into Huangniu Town?"
A police officer, his expression grim, loudly addressed the villagers, his words even carrying a hint of threat.
It was clear at a glance that this police officer had a fiery temper, but his current anger was understandable. Transferring these villagers all the way from Huangniu Town to this spot, though not a long distance, had consumed a significant amount of their effort. Not only did they have to explain things to the villagers, but they also had to ensure their safety. Yet, some villagers simply wouldn't cooperate, questioning this one moment, and that the next. Some even suspected they were imposters, and that their objective was merely to steal the two fat pigs from their homes.
These villagers should have been transferred from Huangniu Town long ago, but precisely because of these issues, the villagers still hadn't completely boarded the vehicles even now.
At the officer's words, the villagers' murmurs subsided, and they obediently boarded the vehicles. Yet, their gazes subconsciously remained fixed on Huangniu Town; some stole a glance before getting in, while others peered out the windows after settling down.
They couldn't actually see anything, but the curiosity in their hearts simply compelled them to keep looking.
Yang Haoran and Ma Ling merely glanced at the situation with the villagers before retracting their gazes, once again looking at the police officer who stood blocking their way.
"My surname is Ma. Please report to your superiors immediately. If they truly won't let us in, then we'll turn back at once and no longer concern ourselves with this matter," Ma Ling stated, a hint of displeasure showing on her face.
She had been invited by the Spirit Police to help, yet now she was being turned away at the gates, which indeed made her feel somewhat uncomfortable.
The reason she had chosen to emerge from the spatial rift here was the presence of a containment barrier ahead. Given her strained ability to tear through space, it would have been unrealistic to attempt to land inside the barrier, so she had no choice but to find a secluded spot outside the barrier to step out of the spatial rift.
What she hadn't expected, however, was that the police officer before them simply wouldn't allow her to enter.
What had caused that sudden explosion just now, others present might not have known, but she and Yang Haoran were perfectly clear: it was the sound of the containment barrier suddenly shattering.
The sudden shattering of the containment barrier indicated that the Spirit Police would likely find it difficult to maintain control over the situation inside Huangniu Town. Therefore, they had to rush to assist immediately, or the consequences would become dire.
Hearing Ma Ling's words, the police officer also felt that the two might indeed have some significant background, especially when Ma Ling mentioned her surname was Ma; the officer's expression subtly shifted.
"Please wait a moment. I'll ask for instructions."
The officer no longer dared to chase them away. He felt it was absolutely necessary to request instructions from his superiors, otherwise, if he truly drove away someone who shouldn't have been, his responsibility would be immense.
After only a brief moment, the police officer returned to stand before the two, his attitude having undergone a significant change from before.
"Please, both of you."
The officer no longer obstructed them, but instead directly invited them to enter.
Ma Ling said nothing, but with a triumphant tilt of her chin, she walked into Huangniu Town.
Yang Haoran, on the other hand, nodded with a smile to the police officer, then followed Ma Ling, who was ahead.
"Be careful, both of you!"
Seeing the two walk so unconcernedly into Huangniu Town, the police officer frowned and couldn't help but remind them.
"Don't worry, Officer sir, there won't be any problems," Ma Ling replied without turning her head, her voice carrying an air of indifference.
Upon entering Huangniu Town, both clearly detected a foul stench. Although Yang Haoran had only encountered this odor once before, the impression it left was extraordinarily deep.
This unique foul odor was the stench of decay—corpse stench!
To prevent external impact, the Spirit Police of Huangniu Town had previously set up a containment barrier. However, just a short while ago, for reasons unknown, the containment barrier had shattered.
Without the containment barrier, if the commotion grew too large, it would inevitably affect ordinary people. Therefore, upon entering Huangniu Town, Ma Ling mobilized the power within her body and set up a new containment barrier.
This containment barrier enveloped the entirety of Huangniu Town, its coverage even greater than the previous containment barrier set up by the Spirit Police.
To Yang Haoran's eyes, this containment barrier set up by Ma Ling was virtually nonexistent. However, it would prevent ordinary people from discovering anything happening in Huangniu Town, and simultaneously keep them from accidentally entering.
Moments later, a scream drew their attention. A figure was sent flying, crashing violently into a wall before finally coming to a halt.
The person's body slid limply down the wall. Before it even hit the ground, several roars erupted, and a few terrifying, four-legged monsters pounced on them.
These four-legged monsters were, in fact, villagers from Huangniu Town, but having been infected with corpse toxin, they had all now transformed into savage Corpse Puppets.
And their current target, judging by the police uniform worn, appeared to be a Spirit Police officer.
The Spirit Police uniform was different from that of ordinary police officers. Yang Haoran had seen this type of uniform on Bai Xue, so he recognized it.
