Chapter 236: I Want to Be a Normal Person
Old Master Wu didn't linger long at the convenience store. He was preoccupied with recruiting new members and needed to finalize the matter as quickly as possible.
Although Yang Haoran had appeared indifferent to the requirements for new recruits, Old Master Wu dared not be sloppy in the slightest. If he were to simply pluck a few random nobodies and present them, he knew without a doubt that Yang Haoran would question his competence.
He had only just managed to become a Night Watcher, and only just gained Yang Haoran's trust and heavy reliance. He absolutely did not want Yang Haoran to have any reservations about him, much less to doubt his abilities.
Only by proving his worth to his boss, Yang Haoran, could he gain more benefits from him and progress further down this path.
Therefore, he would do his utmost to flawlessly execute every single one of Yang Haoran's assignments, not daring to be careless in the least.
Despite having been in a high position for a long time and accustomed to a comfortable and leisurely life, Old Master Wu, even at his advanced age, proved remarkably efficient and his work quality exceptionally high once his ambition was reignited.
While Old Master Wu busied himself with recruiting new people, Yang Haoran remained at the convenience store, lounging on a chair behind the counter. He appeared to be resting with his eyes closed, but in reality, he was checking the situation within his body.
Inside his body, several Death God Seals had autonomously merged into one. The power emanating from this single Death God Seal was immensely strong; even though a portion of it had already been absorbed, the combined power fluctuations it now emitted were still quite terrifying.
Yang Haoran mobilized a vast amount of Spirit Power to form a barrier within his body, sealing this Death God Seal. However, due to the immense power of the Death God Seal, the seal he had erected was already showing signs of instability.
The Death God Seal within his body was like a double-edged sword: if utilized correctly, his strength would receive a significant boost, but if not, it was a ticking time bomb, liable to explode at any moment and become his own death warrant.
The best solution was to absorb and refine this Death God Seal. This would not only avoid harming his physical body but also enhance his strength, killing two birds with one stone.
However, refining the Death God Seal within his body was not something that could be accomplished in a short amount of time. Furthermore, the refining process carried certain risks. Thus, he currently had no intention of beginning the refinement of this Death God Seal this afternoon.
After reinforcing the barrier and ensuring its temporary stability, Yang Haoran set the matter aside. He would deal with this Death God Seal after he had handled the affairs concerning the other Night Watchers in Lecheng tonight.
After strengthening the barrier, Yang Haoran simply lay back in the chair and rested. He hadn't had a proper rest in a long time, his nerves constantly on high alert. With time now on his hands, he decided to do absolutely nothing and truly allow himself to relax.
For him, being able to lie in a chair and rest with closed eyes was a form of relaxation. This was not a particularly high demand in itself, but for Yang Haoran in the recent past, it had been a luxury.
As the convenience store was often closed, business was poor. By evening, Yang Haoran hadn't sold a single item—not even a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of water.
For the Yang Haoran of the past, this would have been a bad thing, but for him now, it no longer mattered.
His perpetually closed eyes opened. Yang Haoran rose from the chair, stretched his stiff body, and a satisfied smile spread across his face. Several hours of resting with closed eyes had left him feeling an unprecedented sense of contentment.
Checking the time, it was already past eight in the evening. Yang Haoran called Guan Hai, then hurried to Guan Hai's bar.
Now that the matter was resolved, he certainly needed to retrieve the Metal Password Case. It wasn't that he didn't trust Guan Hai, but Guan Hai was just an ordinary person, and keeping these items with him for a prolonged period would bring him no benefit, perhaps even inviting a deadly calamity.
Furthermore, he needed the Broken Book for his research into talisman arts. Without that book, he would be forced to cross the river by feeling for stones, and who knew when he would finally be able to draw talismans and become a Talisman Master. That was why he decided to retrieve the Metal Password Case first.
Upon arriving at Guan Hai's bar, he found Guan Hai already waiting, a smile spreading across his face at Yang Haoran's arrival.
"You finished so quickly? Weren't you going to be gone for several days? " Guan Hai asked with a laugh.
Yang Haoran chuckled, replying, "I overthought things."
Guan Hai burst into laughter. "You've always been like this, cautious in everything you do. This world might be full of dangers, but you're a bit too overly cautious."
Yang Haoran merely smiled, offering no explanation, while Guan Hai placed the Metal Password Case on the table and slid it towards him.
"I guarded your box with my life, I can guarantee you one hundred percent that no one has touched it, including me," Guan Hai said with a reassuring smile.
"After so many years as brothers, do you think I wouldn't trust you? " Yang Haoran replied with a laugh, then with a wave of his hand, the Metal Password Case on the table vanished.
To the eyes of a true expert, Yang Haoran's move was nothing more than a very ordinary technique. Yet, to the eyes of an ordinary person, his trick was utterly miraculous, as if he were performing magic.
The reason Yang Haoran revealed this trick to Guan Hai was not to show off to his brother, but rather to pique Guan Hai's profound interest in this field.
At that moment, there were few customers in the bar, and Yang Haoran and Guan Hai were seated in the most secluded corner, so no one noticed the Metal Password Case vanishing into thin air.
However, Guan Hai, seated opposite Yang Haoran, had seen it clearly. His eyes lit up, evidently intrigued.
"How about it? Pretty amazing, isn't it? " Yang Haoran chuckled at Guan Hai.
Guan Hai nodded, responding frankly, "It truly is amazing."
"Then, would you like to possess this power that ordinary people don't have? " Yang Haoran asked with a smile.
As soon as the words left his mouth, Guan Hai froze.
Guan Hai had long known that Yang Haoran possessed powers beyond those of ordinary people, but he had never mentioned to Yang Haoran his desire to learn such wondrous abilities, nor had he even hinted at such a thought.
And Yang Haoran, for his part, had never brought it up, nor had he ever expressed an intention to teach him.
Yet now, Yang Haoran had actually brought up the matter himself, leaving Guan Hai momentarily speechless.
In truth, Yang Haoran didn't particularly wish for Guan Hai to step into this extraordinary world. The reason was simple: this world was fraught with danger, and not just ordinary peril, but dangers that threatened one's very life. He himself was a prime example.
If not for sheer luck this time, he would already have suffered Soul Transformation. Although he hadn't died, many others had. He had never in his life witnessed a scene like that, where human lives seemed utterly worthless under such circumstances.
Yang Haoran had understood this principle even before experiencing the events of last night, which was why he had never brought it up to Guan Hai, nor did he particularly want Guan Hai to enter this circle.
The reason he brought it up tonight was that, after careful consideration, he decided to ask Guan Hai for his thoughts. If Guan Hai truly wished to enter their circle, he would respect Guan Hai's choice. After all, he was now the head of the Lecheng Underworld Office. If he wanted Guan Hai to join their ranks, all it took was his nod; no further approval was needed from anyone.
Moreover, with his current strength, he could also serve as Guan Hai's protective shield. As long as Yang Haoran remained in Lecheng, the threats Guan Hai would face would be significantly reduced.
What surprised Yang Haoran was that after he spoke, Guan Hai actually froze. Then, instead of excitement or eagerness, an expression of hesitation appeared on his face.
This was somewhat unexpected for Yang Haoran, but he didn't rush Guan Hai. Instead, he opened two bottles of wine, handing one to Guan Hai and keeping the other for himself.
He began to drink on his own, while Guan Hai held his bottle, lost in contemplation.
A moment later, Guan Hai seemed to have made his decision. He shook his head at Yang Haoran and said, "I still want to live the life of an ordinary person. I appreciate your kind offer."
Guan Hai's decision slightly surprised Yang Haoran, but he didn't dwell on it. He chose to respect Guan Hai's choice, nodded, and didn't bring the matter up again.
After an hour of drinking and talking with Guan Hai, Yang Haoran finally left the bar and headed to the South Lake Death God Temple.
