Chapter 218: The Appointment Letter

The Soul Pill was of immense help to Yang Haoran, but for now, he wasn't planning on taking it.

Several Death God Seals still existed within his body. Although a portion of their power had been absorbed, another part was being forcibly suppressed by him.

He didn't want to waste this power. Even if it wasn't pure, its sheer quantity was an advantage. As long as he absorbed all of it, his strength was bound to increase significantly once more.

One had to remember that these Death God Seals were what Deng Feng had used to open his Earth Soul. If the power contained within them wasn't strong enough, it couldn't have been used to open a Heaven Soul.

Of course, the only drawback was that the Yin Qi within these Death God Seals wasn't pure. Once he absorbed all the power from them, he would need to spend a considerable amount of time eliminating impurities from his body, otherwise, it might leave him with unforeseen complications.

He re-covered the wooden box and placed a restriction on it to prevent the Soul Pill's Pure Yin Qi from dissipating. Only after completing all this did Yang Haoran confidently place the box on the nearby table.

At this moment, Yang Haoran was in good spirits. He had expected to die tonight, yet not only had he survived, but he had also successfully opened his Heaven Soul.

What he hadn't anticipated even more was becoming Lecheng's Emissary of Death in such a short amount of time.

Happiness had arrived so suddenly that a little excitement was inevitable for him.

However, he quickly adjusted his state, gradually regaining his composure, and began to make plans for the future.

About two hours later, Yang Haoran, lost in profound thought, suddenly seemed to sense something. His gaze drifted towards the nearby table, eventually settling on the thin Iron Books.

He saw that the Iron Books were spontaneously emitting wisps of Yin Qi, an aura of mystery tinged with a hint of the uncanny.

This sudden occurrence made Yang Haoran's face fill with curiosity. He picked up the Iron Books once more and opened them.

As the Iron Books were opened, small black characters immediately floated out, swiftly forming a passage of text before him.

"Urgent Announcement: Our Lecheng Underworld Office was attacked last night by Spirit Masters and Evil Spirits. Emissary of Death Deng Feng led the Night Watchers in a full counter-attack, successfully slaying the Spirit Master Du Da. However, our forces suffered heavy losses, with five Night Watchers, including the Emissary of Death, sacrificing themselves and undergoing Soul Transformation. Emissaries of Death in other cities should heighten their vigilance to prevent similar tragedies."

Gazing at the black characters coalesced from Yin Qi before him, Yang Haoran couldn't help but smile.

The Black-Clothed Man was concerned that Deng Feng's malicious acts would impact him, so Yang Haoran offered a suggestion: a way to announce Deng Feng's death while minimizing any negative repercussions.

This method involved portraying Deng Feng as a hero who died in the line of duty, rather than a butcher who arbitrarily slaughtered Night Watchers for his own selfish gain.

As for the number of deceased Night Watchers, that was entirely fabricated. The number "five" was chosen based on convenience, as reporting too many or too few wouldn't be ideal.

The black characters vanished, and then, under Yang Haoran's watchful gaze, another series of black characters appeared before his body.

But this time, the content was entirely different from before; it was an appointment letter.

"Lecheng Night Watcher Yang Haoran demonstrated outstanding performance in this incident, earning merit for slaying the Spirit Master Du Da. Therefore, he is appointed as Lecheng's new Emissary of Death, effective immediately."

The black characters vanished again. The moment they dissipated into specks of Yin Qi, an intense surge of Yin Qi appeared out of thin air, like a black tornado, engulfing Yang Haoran's body.

This sudden burst of Yin Qi had no effect on the growth of Spirit Power within Yang Haoran's body. However, after its appearance, this Yin Qi rapidly began to transform his physical form.

Feeling the enormous changes occurring in his body, Yang Haoran didn't resist, allowing the Yin Qi to remodel his physical form.

He knew this must be the greatest benefit of becoming an Emissary of Death: an immortal and ageless body.

The Yin Qi arrived swiftly and vanished just as quickly. After a few breaths, the Yin Qi storm disappeared. While Yang Haoran's body outwardly appeared unchanged, he knew deep down that in that brief period, his physical form had been completely transformed.

From this moment forward, as long as he wasn't subjected to external attacks, his body would never age and would no longer succumb to natural death like an ordinary person.

In the Underworld Office, only true Emissaries of Death were qualified to enjoy such treatment. Even a Night Watcher who had opened their Heaven Soul wouldn't have this opportunity to transform their physical body; they would still experience birth, aging, sickness, and death with the passage of time, albeit at a slower pace compared to ordinary people.

Yang Haoran hadn't expected the Black-Clothed Man to be so swift. In just two short hours, he had not only announced Deng Feng's situation but had also delivered Yang Haoran's appointment.

He had initially thought this matter would take some time, but reality had exceeded his expectations.

"She must have seen the announcement and the appointment letter by now, right? I wonder what expression she has on her face at this moment, hehe."

At this moment, Yang Haoran chuckled softly. Thinking of Xu Meijing in Ancheng, a smile involuntarily blossomed on his face, laced with a rare hint of self-satisfaction.

However, just then, Old Master Wu and the two other individuals successively regained consciousness from their stupor. Sensing their awakening, Yang Haoran reined in his subtle satisfaction and smiled as he looked at them.

The three who had woken up looked utterly bewildered. They had no memory of what had happened that night, nor did they understand why they were in this hall.

However, when they discovered a full row of Night Watchers' corpses laid out in the hall, all three of their faces, without exception, drastically changed.

Yang Haoran observed their reactions, which were entirely within his expectations, so he didn't show the slightest surprise.

"W-what in the world happened?"

One Night Watcher's eyes were filled with terror, clearly shaken by the sight before him, while another was even worse, too frightened to utter a single word for a long time.

Yang Haoran's expression remained unchanged by their reactions, as he held no expectations for these two. Thus, even if they had acted even more cowardly at this moment, he wouldn't have felt an ounce of disappointment.

Old Master Wu's reaction, however, was somewhat different from the two Night Watchers. He seemed to sense that something was amiss and was desperately trying to recall something.

When he first awoke, the scene before him had indeed given Old Master Wu a fright. But soon after, he noticed something was wrong; he seemed to have forgotten something important.

Yet, no matter how hard he tried to remember, he couldn't find a single clue, baffled by what had truly happened.

"Don't be so surprised. Now isn't the time for it."

Yang Haoran suddenly spoke, startling the three of them. Only then did they realize that besides the three of them, there was one more living person in the hall.

Their perceptive abilities had become so poor, partly because they were too shocked to even notice Yang Haoran's presence.

Furthermore, having lost their Death God Seals, they were now no different from ordinary people, and their keen perceptive abilities had naturally vanished with them.

At this moment, all three of their gazes landed on Yang Haoran. Seeing him seated in the main seat, their faces showed even greater shock.

They looked at Yang Haoran in the main seat, then at Deng Feng's corpse on the floor, and the expressions on their faces were quite a sight to behold.

At that moment, a similar thought almost simultaneously surfaced in all three of their minds: Could all of this have been Yang Haoran's doing?

Is he. . . is he trying to rebel?

Yang Haoran didn't want to waste too much time on them, nor did he have any interest in finding a sense of accomplishment from their reactions. So, with a faint smile, he spoke again to the three still-shocked individuals.

"Last night, we were ambushed by Spirit Masters. All of them sacrificed themselves, including Emissary Deng Feng, which is why you see this scene before you."

Yang Haoran had no intention of explaining in detail to the three, merely glossing over it with a single sentence.

His words, however, did not diminish their shock; instead, it increased exponentially.

However, Yang Haoran's next sentence caused all three of them to freeze in place.

"From now on, there will be no more Deng Feng in Lecheng. I, on the other hand, am your new Emissary."
