Chapter 179: Who is the Protagonist?

Du Da left. Before leaving, he had reverted to his robust, burly appearance, walked out of the convenience store, and vanished into the crowd.

The reason he made Yang Haoran wait an hour before contacting Deng Feng was, naturally, to avoid being intercepted and killed by Deng Feng, ensuring his safe departure from the area.

Yang Haoran closed the door again, a cold sneer surfacing on his face.

He didn't immediately contact Deng Feng. Instead, following Du Da's instructions, he waited an hour before taking out his phone and dialing Deng Feng's number.

The call connected after a few rings, and Deng Feng's calm voice came through from the other end.

"Who is this?"

"Emissary of Death, it's Yang Haoran."

Deng Feng didn't have Yang Haoran's phone number, which didn't surprise Yang Haoran in the slightest. After all, Deng Feng was the boss, and Yang Haoran was just a small employee; it was normal for the boss not to have his number.

It wasn't strange, however, for Yang Haoran to have Deng Feng's number. As someone currently in the boss's favor—even if only superficially—it was natural to acquire the boss's contact information so he could report anything at any time.

Upon hearing it was Yang Haoran, Deng Feng's indifferent tone gained a hint of warmth.

"Haoran, what is it?"

Deng Feng's sudden use of "Haoran" caught Yang Haoran off guard for a moment; he wasn't quite used to it. In the past, he hadn't even had a proper title when addressing Deng Feng.

"Emissary of Death, Du Da has made a move. " Yang Haoran cut straight to the chase, wasting no words.

Hearing that Du Da had made a move, Deng Feng's tone immediately changed, becoming considerably more agitated.

"What kind of move? " Deng Feng asked.

"He just came to find me, and he almost killed me! " Yang Haoran said, a look of lingering fear on his face.

"He came to find you? Why would he look for you? " Deng Feng asked, his previous hint of warmth gone, replaced by a more serious demeanor.

"He believed that your last ambush on him was connected to me, so he wanted to come back and deal with me. " Yang Haoran replied.

On the other end of the line, Deng Feng was silent for a few seconds before asking, "Then how are you still alive? What did you say to him?"

"Hehe, I told him our plan," Yang Haoran said with a chuckle.

"What? ! " Deng Feng was startled, then burst into an angry curse: "Are you ******* insane? ! You told him the plan? Then will he still come to the Ghost Building?"

"Emissary of Death, please don't get agitated. There's a reason for what I did. I can assure you that for someone like him, my actions won't backfire; on the contrary, they will serve as a certain push," Yang Haoran quickly explained.

"Are you certain? " Deng Feng forcibly suppressed his inner fury, his voice tinged with uncertainty.

"Don't worry, I'm certain. And the reason I chose to tell him the plan is entirely because of you, Emissary of Death! " Yang Haoran said with a wry smile.

"Because of me? " Deng Feng's voice became puzzled.

"Your ambush on Du Da this time caused him heavy losses; he lost two powerful Evil Spirits. He's a very cunning person, extremely cautious in his actions. After losing two Evil Spirits, he knows his strength has plummeted, and he'll surely be hesitant about everything. At that point, let alone you and that entity in the Ghost Building putting on a show, even if you genuinely fought, he might not even appear. If we stick to the original plan, the 'show' we put on would only be for the ghosts in the Ghost Building, completely meaningless."

Yang Haoran's words were well-reasoned and supported, not at all like he was deliberately trying to trick Deng Feng. From any angle, these seemed to be his true thoughts.

"So? " Deng Feng asked coldly.

"So I temporarily changed the plan, telling him the original plan to bait him into taking the hook," Yang Haoran replied.

Deng Feng let out a cold snort and retorted, "You're so sure he'll take the bait? Do you think he'll believe you?"

"He certainly won't fully believe me; I'm well aware of that. However, revealing our plan to him under the threat of death still lends it some credibility and will have a certain impact on him. He won't fully believe me, but he'll at least believe a little, and that sliver of belief is all I need."

"Emissary of Death, even before you eliminated those two Evil Spirits of his, his killing intent towards you was already extremely strong. Now that you've caused him to lose two Evil Spirits, drastically weakening his power, his desire to kill you has naturally intensified. In my opinion, as long as he has an opportunity to eliminate you, he absolutely won't miss it!"

"Learning our plan is an opportunity, and even if he harbors some doubts about it, it will serve as a warning to him. While he'll be on guard, he'll also put more effort into this very matter."

"If I'm not mistaken, he will definitely go to the Ghost Building soon. He'll seek out that entity within the Ghost Building and try to cooperate with them to jointly deal with you!"

"If I hadn't said anything, and we proceeded with the original plan, then you, Emissary of Death, would ultimately suffer, and that outcome is precisely what Du Da desires!"

"My obedience to him was entirely feigned; not an ounce of it was real. He thought that with my life threatened, it would be absolutely impossible for me to tell you about this, because in his eyes, his death would mean my death. To save my life, I'd have no reason whatsoever to inform you. But how could he know, Emissary of Death, that you had long ago mastered the method to remove the Soul Dispersing Needle? His threat to me was nothing but a joke!"

At this point, Yang Haoran couldn't help but let out a laugh, a sinister sound as if he had already witnessed Du Da's death before his very eyes.

After hearing Yang Haoran's explanation, Deng Feng's tone softened considerably.

"Based on my understanding of that old scoundrel Du Da, after he learns of our plan, he will definitely go to the Ghost Building to find that entity. Because he knows that while that entity in the Ghost Building has a cooperative relationship with me, our relationship has always been less than ideal. As long as he's willing to pay a heavy price, it's possible he could persuade them to deal with me."

Yang Haoran chuckled, saying, "Then why don't we eliminate him before he can negotiate with that entity in the Ghost Building?"

"Are you suggesting. . . " Deng Feng seemed to have realized something, but wasn't entirely certain.

"What I mean, Emissary of Death, haven't you already guessed it? " Yang Haoran responded with a smile.

"Setting up an ambush beforehand, waiting for him to walk into the trap—that's certainly a good idea. However, I don't wish to do that for now."

Deng Feng's reply made Yang Haoran frown.

"That old fox Du Da isn't someone to be trifled with. If there's an opportunity to eliminate him, it's best not to miss it, lest complications arise later," Yang Haoran advised.

"I have my own ideas about this, so don't ask any more questions. Your previous plan doesn't need to be changed. Even though that old immortal Du Da knows about it, upon closer thought, it might not be a bad thing. So, I've decided to proceed according to the original plan," Deng Feng said, suddenly chuckling inexplicably as he spoke to Yang Haoran.

"Proceed according to the original plan, Emissary of Death. . ."

Yang Haoran still wanted to say something, but Deng Feng cut him off directly.

"Alright, just do as I say. When the day of the plan arrives, I hope you perform well according to the script we've already prepared. In fact, you are the protagonist of this play. If you don't perform well, even if that old immortal Du Da knows our plan, he'll still think it's a trap and won't easily fall for it."

After saying this, Deng Feng hung up the phone directly, exuding the aura of a true boss.

Yang Haoran put away his phone, his brows relaxing, and the confusion on his face vanished, replaced by a cold sneer.

He knew that Deng Feng had always been quite wary of him, so there were some things he simply didn't want to reveal.

However, Deng Feng's demand to proceed with the original plan perfectly suited his intentions.

He knew that Deng Feng, like Du Da, didn't fully trust him. That's why he had just suggested Deng Feng ambush Du Da beforehand, specifically hoping that Deng Feng would refuse and still proceed with the original plan.

The outcome left him very satisfied.

"Although my life's path is nearing its end, I still want to experience what it's like to be the protagonist before I die. Perhaps, as Deng Feng said, I am indeed the true protagonist of this play; I have been the protagonist of this play from beginning to end."

At the same time, Deng Feng also put away his phone, a cold smile likewise appearing on his face.

"Heh heh, it truly is something to look forward to. I sincerely hope that day arrives soon."
