Chapter 1385: The Unnamed Small Tower
Looking at Yang Haoran’s back, the two Guardians were seething with anger. There was already a significant grudge between them, and now, despite Yang Haoran being in such a predicament, he showed no intention of bowing his head before them. Naturally, they felt far from comfortable.
Therefore, not only did the portly man want to seize this opportunity to teach Yang Haoran a lesson, but the Middle-aged Woman harbored the same thoughts.
“Yang Haoran,” the portly man sneered, his voice laced with menace and provocation, “the Great Emperor sent the two of us to supervise your every move. But from your attitude, it seems you’re quite unwilling. Do we really need to show you a little color before you behave? If so, we wouldn’t mind teaching you a good lesson before we apprehend the target. ”
He said this in an attempt to provoke Yang Haoran, hoping to make him strike first.
Once Yang Haoran made a move against them, they could seize the opportunity to thoroughly beat him, venting their inner rage. As long as they didn’t kill him or render him unconscious, it wouldn’t have much impact on their mission or consequences.
The portly man’s reasoning was sound, but unfortunately, Yang Haoran didn’t take the bait. Although Yang Haoran had his back to them, they could sense that his emotions hadn’t changed in the slightest. This only fueled the indignation in their hearts, making it burn even fiercer.
“Two Guardians,” Yang Haoran said, still with his back to them, “please follow me into the small tower. Inside this tower is a trusted subordinate of mine, a ghost cultivator, who manages this building. ”
Yang Haoran spoke with his back to them, then, without waiting for a reply, he stepped first into the small tower. Though deeply displeased, the two of them hadn’t forgotten the mission assigned by the Tong Continent Great Emperor, so neither hesitated. Bearing their discomfort, they too entered the small tower.
From the outside, the small tower appeared unremarkable, merely an ordinary, ancient-style, pagoda-shaped building, wider at the base and tapering upwards. It was neither grand nor particularly beautiful, and its footprint wasn’t large. It didn’t even have a name, its purpose unknown. If there was anything distinctive about it, it was that the entire building was black.
Upon entering the small tower, the first thing visible were various statues of differing shapes. Some of these statues held staffs, others swords, and they weren’t particularly tall, just the size of average adults. They were haphazardly placed throughout the first floor, seemingly without order, giving off a chaotic impression.
Other than these statues, there was nothing else on the first floor. Not even a table or a chair was present. No people were seen, nor any ghosts.
Seeing this scene, the two Guardians involuntarily furrowed their brows. Both were astonishingly powerful Guardians, and their tenure as Guardians far exceeded Yang Haoran’s. Naturally, their insight was beyond that of ordinary people, and they never looked at problems superficially.
An ordinary person arriving here would surely feel chaos first, finding nothing special beyond the disorder. However, when the portly man and the Middle-aged Woman entered, their primary sensation was not disorder, but vigilance. To their eyes, the seemingly random placement of the statues appeared to conceal a hidden pattern — an intuition born from accumulated experience and profound insight.
Nonetheless, neither of them was worried or fearful. Even if Yang Haoran tried any tricks, they were confident they could subdue him. They didn't believe Yang Haoran was a match for the two of them.
Not to mention their combined strength, even one of them alone, in their estimation, possessed the power to completely overwhelm Yang Haoran. After all, Yang Haoran hadn't been a Guardian for long; even counting his time as an Emissary of Death, it amounted to less than a fraction of their own time as Guardians. Thus, they didn't believe Yang Haoran had the power to contend with either of them.
Furthermore, with the Tong Continent Great Emperor overseeing things today, even if this was Yang Haoran's Guardian District, if Yang Haoran dared to play tricks, he would have absolutely no chance of victory. They, of course, had no concerns for their safety, nor any reason to fear.
“Yang Haoran, are you making fools of us? There’s not even a ghost shadow here. Who are we supposed to apprehend? ” the Middle-aged Woman demanded, her face grim. She had scanned the area, sensing no power fluctuations on the first floor, nor any spiritual entities possessing the statues. This floor, besides the strange statues, seemed truly devoid of other presences. RANobes
“He’s not on the first floor, so he’s likely on the second,” Yang Haoran replied calmly. He then walked towards the staircase, not even glancing back as he spoke.
Yang Haoran’s attitude, coupled with the vigilance they felt for the place, prompted them to discreetly mobilize their internal power. Although they weren’t concerned about their safety or afraid of any tricks Yang Haoran might play, they maintained a necessary level of caution. This was to prevent Yang Haoran from cornering them like a desperate dog and biting them, for even if it didn’t kill them, it would still hurt.
The passage from the first to the second floor was protected by an inhibitory barrier, making it impossible to ascertain the situation on the second floor or to enter. However, with a slight wave of Yang Haoran’s hand, this inhibitory barrier vanished.
Led by Yang Haoran, the three quickly arrived on the second floor.
The second floor was more than half the size of the first. There were no statues here, only what appeared to be an altar. Yet, strangely, the altar was completely empty, devoid of any offerings or objects of worship.
This scene caused the two Guardians’ anger to erupt. Not much time had passed since they left the study, but they had both been searching for an opportunity to properly teach Yang Haoran a lesson. This desire had intensified, especially after Yang Haoran’s attitude towards them proved so different from what they had anticipated.
Having failed to find the target on the first floor, they were already on the verge of exploding. Now, arriving on the second floor and still seeing no trace of a ghost, the two finally couldn’t hold back!
“Yang Haoran, you truly are toying with us! ” the portly man roared. As his voice fell, he instantly teleported behind Yang Haoran, then unleashed a punch at his back!
Although Yang Haoran had his back to the two, his vigilance towards them had never wavered. The instant the portly man made his move, Yang Haoran immediately sensed it. His figure flickered, and he vanished from his spot, causing the portly man’s punch to land on empty air.
When his punch failed to connect with Yang Haoran, the portly man momentarily froze. Although he hadn’t used his full strength in that blow, he had still exerted considerable power, aiming to teach Yang Haoran a lesson, make him suffer a bit, and endure some physical pain. Given the suddenness of the attack and his extremely fast speed, he had estimated that Yang Haoran shouldn’t have been able to dodge. Yet, the reality was that Yang Haoran not only evaded it, but seemed to do so with ease. He was utterly astonished, and thus, for a moment, he actually froze.
It wasn’t just the attacking portly man who froze; the Middle-aged Woman, witnessing this scene, also paused in disbelief. She knew the portly man’s strength, and it was precisely because she knew it that she couldn’t believe her eyes.
Their stunned silence lasted only an instant before both reacted. The portly man, consumed by shame and rage, intended to strike at Yang Haoran again, not only to redeem himself but also to inflict greater harm.
Meanwhile, the Middle-aged Woman prepared to set up an inhibitory barrier on the second floor to prevent the commotion of their fight from spreading. She wasn’t worried about attracting Yang Haoran’s allies; her concern was that the Tong Continent Great Emperor might sense the disturbance.
The Tong Continent Great Emperor had sent them to supervise Yang Haoran, not to engage him in combat. If they failed to apprehend the target and instead started fighting Yang Haoran here, the Great Emperor would certainly be displeased. Crucially, Yang Haoran wasn’t the one who struck first; if he had been, things would have been much simpler. That was why she prepared to set up an inhibitory barrier in this place!
