Chapter 1252: Unwilling to Let Go

The inner sect disciple didn't even have time to utter a single scream before he was reduced to a pile of minced flesh. Not only was his physical body utterly destroyed, but even his soul dissipated into thin air. Normally, such a phenomenon wouldn't occur; even if a physical body were pulverized to dust, the soul would still persist. Without external forces forcefully gathering it, it would naturally coalesce into a spirit body in the death zone after seven days.

However, the reason this inner sect disciple's soul was shattered was entirely due to Zhong Siyu. She simply had no intention of leaving his soul intact, striking with enough ruthlessness to annihilate his soul along with his physical body. Moreover, Zhong Siyu didn't even make a single move; a mere glance was enough to consign this inner sect disciple to such a fate.

To achieve such a feat, the disparity in strength between the two parties must be immense. If their power levels were not so far apart, it would naturally be impossible. The inner sect disciple's strength was worlds apart from Zhong Siyu's, which is why she accomplished it with such ease.

Yang Haoran wanted to stop Zhong Siyu, but he was a step too late. This delay wasn't in preventing Zhong Siyu from killing, but in reacting to her power fluctuation.

In that very instant, Yang Haoran was indeed too late to prevent Zhong Siyu's power from erupting. However, if he had willed it, he could still have intervened to stop Zhong Siyu's strike and save the inner sect disciple. After all, Zhong Siyu was right beside him, and she didn't attack immediately after unleashing her power fluctuation. Though the window was brief, it was sufficient for him to intervene and rescue the inner sect disciple.

The reason he didn't intervene was that the moment Zhong Siyu's power erupted, they were exposed. Since they were already revealed, there was no longer any need for him to stop Zhong Siyu from killing. This inner sect disciple was no kin of his, and moreover, he had brought death upon himself. Yang Haoran had no reason whatsoever to save him.

Furthermore, he knew Zhong Siyu's temperament very well. He knew she was currently furious, and if he were to intervene and stop her under such circumstances, he would undoubtedly incur her extreme displeasure. Her anger might even extend to him. He certainly didn't want things to escalate in such a way for the sake of an unrelated person.

The instant Zhong Siyu's power erupted, everyone's attention was immediately drawn to her. This, of course, included the inner sect disciples of the Corpse-Controlling Gate present. Their gazes uniformly turned towards Zhong Siyu, and precisely because of this, they all, without exception, witnessed the bloody and violent scene that had just unfolded.

Although Yang Haoran didn't want to be exposed so quickly under the Corpse-Controlling Gate's watchful eyes, since things had come to this, he could only grudgingly accept the reality. He didn't dwell on Zhong Siyu's impulsiveness, as now was simply not the time for such considerations. Even if he did, it wouldn't change what had already happened.

His mind raced, and in but an instant, he made a decision.

Temporarily retreating was clearly impossible, because his friend was still inside the restrictive barrier, and his entire purpose for coming here was for this friend. Once he and Zhong Siyu withdrew, whether his friend could escape from the hands of the Corpse-Controlling Gate was an unknown. Perhaps his friend's life would even be forfeit here. This was not the outcome he wished to see, so retreating was out of the question.

. . . . His thought process was very direct: since he and Zhong Siyu were already exposed, there was no need to hide anymore. Nor was there any need to continue waiting on the sidelines for the optimal moment to strike; given the current circumstances, they had neither the time nor the opportunity to wait any longer. Therefore, he decided to act now, using thunderous means to break open the restrictive barrier and forcibly take his friend. Whoever stood in their way would be killed.

Yang Haoran had just made his decision and hadn't yet had time to implement it when, suddenly, the restrictive barrier ahead violently shook. Following a thunderous roar, a white beam of light burst through the restrictive barrier and shot into the sky, illuminating the entire night.

Originally, everyone present had their attention fixed on Zhong Siyu, especially the Corpse-Controlling Gate inner sect disciples responsible for vigilance. They had even mobilized their internal power, poised to encircle Zhong Siyu. Now, with the restrictive barrier suddenly and forcefully breached, their attention immediately shifted from Zhong Siyu to the restrictive barrier itself. In their eyes, this restrictive barrier was far more important than Zhong Siyu. After all, their task tonight was to prevent unauthorized personnel from approaching the restrictive barrier here, lest it be damaged. And now that the restrictive barrier had suddenly been forcefully broken, they were naturally both shocked and anxious.

The instant the restrictive barrier was breached by the white light pillar, a figure shot out from the opening in the barrier, fleeing towards the outskirts of the city.

Following this figure, several more emerged consecutively from the breach in the restrictive barrier. They confirmed the direction the first figure had fled and, without the slightest hesitation, immediately gave chase.

The inner sect disciples of the Corpse-Controlling Gate present were all dumbfounded. Due to the isolation of the restrictive barrier, they didn't know what had transpired inside it. However, when they saw so many important figures from their sect unhesitatingly pursue the fleeing person, and some of these important figures even appeared to be significantly injured, their hearts were, without exception, filled with shock.

Yet, before these inner sect disciples could recover from their shock, Zhong Siyu, at that very moment, charged towards the closest inner sect disciple.

With a flash of crimson light, a leering Zhong Siyu appeared before the man. Powerful energy fluctuations and an intense sense of peril stimulated his nerves, instantly jolting him out of his previous shock.

However, as he came back to his senses, his heart was no longer filled with shock, but with terror—a fear that originated from the depths of his soul.

He didn't know who this leering woman before him was, but he knew she was extremely dangerous. He could already feel death's approach; if he didn't dodge quickly, he would certainly die by her hand.

No sooner had this thought formed in his mind than Zhong Siyu struck, before he even had time to move his feet or employ any defensive measures. With a casual twist, Zhong Siyu easily snapped his neck. The back of his head spun to the front, his face to the back, and his terrified expression remained frozen upon it.

To Zhong Siyu, dispatching this inner sect disciple was no different than crushing an ant. After killing him, she didn't stop but instead turned her slaughtering blade towards the other inner sect disciples of the Corpse-Controlling Gate present.

. . . . Crimson shadows flickered. With every movement Zhong Siyu made, she claimed the life of another inner sect disciple of the Corpse-Controlling Gate. Screams of terror and agony rose higher and higher, wave after wave. Zhong Siyu was incredibly fast; in just a brief moment, several of the Corpse-Controlling Gate's inner sect disciples present had died wretchedly by her hand. Though their manners of death differed, all were equally gruesome.

"Stop killing! Let's hurry and catch up!"

Yang Haoran had no mind for these minions. In his eyes, these inner sect disciples of the Corpse-Controlling Gate were indeed nothing more than insignificant minions. He certainly didn't want to delay their important business by slaughtering them.

As Yang Haoran reminded Zhong Siyu, his body shot into the air. He no longer kept his full power sealed, as there was no longer any need. However, he didn't unleash his entire strength, only mobilizing a very small portion of his power. Thus, the power fluctuations emanating from him at this moment were not strong, and few people noticed him.

Zhong Siyu, who was reveling in the slaughter, showed displeasure upon hearing Yang Haoran's words. However, after a brief hesitation, she stopped. Her figure flickered, disappearing from her spot, and when she reappeared, she was already by Yang Haoran's side.

"Your important business will certainly be far more exciting than slaughtering these minions, but I'm not prepared to just let them off the hook like this."

Zhong Siyu gave a hideous grin, then extended her fair right hand and clenched it fiercely. The ground below violently trembled, and a colossal ghost hand subsequently burst forth from the earth, directly crushing a considerable area below to smithereens. Those inner sect disciples of the Corpse-Controlling Gate whom she hadn't yet slaughtered all perished miserably under this single strike, every last one meeting the fate of utter annihilation, leaving no bones behind.
