Chapter 1221: Small in Stature, Not Small in Guts

Xiang Chuan's face was wreathed in smiles. Driven by intense curiosity, he casually opened a box, and when he saw that it contained spiritual medicinal ingredients, the smile on his face instantly grew even brighter.

"Heh heh, Big Brother, don't tell me. . . these boxes are all filled with spiritual medicinal ingredients?"

Xiang Chuan grinned, his face radiating a bright smile as he spoke to Yang Haoran. Though he said this, his expression clearly showed that he, too, was keenly anticipating such an outcome.

"If Xia Xinger didn't lie to me, then these boxes are definitely filled with various spiritual medicinal ingredients. Besides, I doubt Xia Xinger, a dignified Saint of the Saint Mother Cult, would stoop to deceiving me about something like this."

Yang Haoran said with a smile. Xiang Chuan had already half-expected this outcome, so when Yang Haoran confirmed it, he didn't show much surprise.

"I think the same as Big Brother. I don't believe Xia Xinger would do anything so deceptive. I just don't know how many of these spiritual medicinal ingredients I can use right now, and how many will have to wait. " Xiang Chuan chuckled.

"Heh heh, you'll naturally figure that out when you sort and categorize these spiritual medicinal ingredients later. I'll leave this to you. Take your time processing them. " Yang Haoran said with a smile.

"Heh heh, Big Brother, don't worry. I'll have these spiritual medicinal ingredients sorted out quickly. In ten days to half a month at most, Big Brother will receive another batch of Dānyào refined by your little brother. " Xiang Chuan laughed.

"Heh heh, good. Take your time, and if you encounter any problems you can't solve, you can find me."

With these words, Yang Haoran did not linger in the reception hall. His figure flickered, and he vanished without a trace, leaving only two people in the entire hall: Xiang Chuan and the Night Watcher who had summoned him there.

"Brother, come help out."

Since the number of boxes containing spiritual medicinal ingredients was truly too great, it would undoubtedly take Xiang Chuan some time to handle them alone. Therefore, he asked the Night Watcher standing nearby to help process them together.

Although Xiang Chuan was not a Night Watcher himself, everyone in the Gu Mo City Underworld Office knew that Xiang Chuan belonged to their Guardian and was an important figure beside him. So, even though Xiang Chuan held no official position in the Gu Mo City Underworld Office, these Night Watchers would still show him respect.

Because of this, the Night Watcher currently present did not refuse Xiang Chuan, nor did he offer any excuses. Instead, he readily agreed to Xiang Chuan's request.

While Xiang Chuan was busy sorting and categorizing the spiritual medicinal ingredients, Yang Haoran returned to his bedroom to continue refining Soul Pills and enhancing his strength.

He had initially thought that Xia Xinger's visit would take up some of his time, but he hadn't expected Xia Xinger to be so straightforward, leaving the payment and departing immediately. The entire exchange took no more than the time it takes to smoke a single cigarette.

Although somewhat surprised, Yang Haoran didn't dwell on the matter. With no other pressing affairs to attend to for the time being, he simply returned to his bedroom and continued to fully refine Soul Pills to bolster his strength.

In Yang Haoran's view, Xia Xinger's unwillingness to stay longer was likely due to her significant prejudice against his way of doing things, besides wanting to distance herself from him. With different paths, naturally, she wouldn't want to spend much time with him.

Of course, Yang Haoran also harbored prejudice against the Saint Mother Cult's methods, so his attempts to persuade Xia Xinger to stay were far from sincere. Xia Xinger's insistence on leaving was, in fact, a situation he was pleased to see; otherwise, if he had to spend more time with her, he would feel entirely uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, outside a certain mine within the Underworld Office's territory, just outside Gu Mo City, a perilous scene was unfolding.

A colossal, dark-red monster resembling a centipede was violently thrashing its body, slithering through the scattered rocks, and frantically pursuing a group of ordinary people.

These ordinary people were all believers of the Underworld Office's Death God. The reason they were there was that this area was their assigned workplace, and their main task was to mine ore for the Gu Mo City Underworld Office in this very mine.

At the very back of the group, a middle-aged man's speed was considerably slower. The reason his pace lagged behind the others was that he had suffered a leg injury, causing him to limp and be unable to pick up his speed.

Terrified, the middle-aged man had lost his composure. Coupled with his failing stamina and the uneven, potholed road, he stumbled and fell heavily to the ground. Before he could even scramble back up, the colossal centipede behind him caught up.

The enormous centipede opened its gaping maw, let out a strange shriek, and lunged to bite the man below.

The middle-aged man was utterly terrified, his fear starkly etched on his face. Faced with such a life-or-death situation, he had actually forgotten to dodge, staring in horror as the gaping maw lunged towards him.

However, at that very moment, two fist-sized stones cut through the air, hurtling rapidly towards the centipede.

Thud!

Thud!

With two dull thuds, the two stones successfully struck the centipede's head. Unfortunately, the force of these fist-sized stones was limited; while their aim was decent, they inflicted no damage upon the centipede.

"Run! ! !"

A frantic cry of warning rang out. From the voice, it was clear that the speaker was not old, and his warning was naturally directed at the middle-aged man on the ground.

But unfortunately, the middle-aged man, paralyzed by extreme terror, had a mind that was utterly blank. The warning had no effect on him whatsoever; he remained frozen in place, his face filled with horror, having completely forgotten to dodge.

Inevitably, the centipede bit down on the middle-aged man's upper body. The man didn't even have time to scream before the centipede swallowed him whole.

"What a waste!"

The voice that had previously warned the middle-aged man rang out again, but this time, he wasn't offering a warning; he was swearing fiercely. His target, of course, was the middle-aged man who had just been swallowed by the centipede.

After swallowing the middle-aged man, the centipede straightened its body, standing halfway upright, then turned its head to look to the side. Two figures entered its line of sight.

The two figures were a boy and a girl, both quite young. The boy appeared to be about fourteen, and the girl around twelve.

They were the two who had just suddenly attacked the centipede with stones. It was the boy who had warned the middle-aged man to dodge, and it was also the boy who had cursed at him.

Although the two were filthy, dressed in rags and with disheveled hair, their exquisite features could not be concealed. From their appearance, they seemed to be siblings, as their faces bore a strong resemblance.

And indeed, that was the truth. They were indeed siblings, relying on each other for survival in these chaotic times.

Besides their ragged clothes, both siblings were also very thin, clearly a result of long-term malnutrition. Yet, they exuded a lively spirit, not disheartened by their frailty, and their eyes constantly shone with a killing intent and fierce determination unbefitting their young age.

When the siblings saw the centipede looking their way, not a trace of terror appeared on their faces. Instead, they wore only serious expressions and adopted stances ready to engage the centipede in battle.

If other children their age had encountered such a situation, they would likely have already wet themselves in fear. How could they dare to act like these two siblings?

Not to mention other children their age, even adults wouldn't possess the courage these two siblings displayed. This needed no confirmation, for the facts were plain to see: everyone else present was currently fleeing for their lives, even exerting every ounce of strength they had, yet only these two siblings dared to stop and even strike at this enormous centipede.

From this alone, it was evident that their courage might even surpass that of adults.

If these siblings possessed powers beyond those of ordinary people, then their actions would be understandable. But the crucial point was that they were just ordinary people, with no supernatural abilities within them.

Therefore, it took immense courage, truly great courage, to do what they did.

"Heh heh heh heh, two little runts, small in stature but not small in guts. Since you're so eager to become my food, I shall fulfill your wish."
