Chapter 110: Fulfilling the Mission
Another colleague had sacrificed themselves. This was a tremendous blow to Chen Ying. Although from the moment she donned this police uniform, she had mentally prepared for death, this was true for both herself and her colleagues.
Due to the nature of their profession, they were bound to deal with various criminals. Encountering danger during missions was a common occurrence, and sometimes it even cost them their lives. Therefore, they had to possess a strong mindset, capable of accepting the deaths of their colleagues, as well as their own.
However, when death truly descended, their past mental preparations felt as fragile as a flickering candle in the wind, ready to be extinguished with the slightest breath.
Especially when witnessing a colleague fall right before their eyes, the feeling was as if someone were slowly slicing open their own flesh with a knife, cut by cut, a bone-deep agony.
"Don't worry," Chen Ying said, her voice catching. "I'll get you out of here. I won't let these ghostly abominations defile your body."
She wiped the tears from her face, then helped her colleague's body upright.
Seeing this, the other officers quickly moved to Chen Ying's side. They had also noticed that the black light emanating from Chen Ying could repel the Corpse Puppets. If they didn't stay close to Chen Ying, they would be the next to die a horrific death.
This had nothing to do with cowardice. They had nothing to restrain the Corpse Puppets, but Chen Ying did. So why not make full use of it?
"Chen Ying, over there! We can't leave them behind."
Chen Ying nodded. Two officers took the colleagues' bodies from her hands, then the group hurried towards the bodies of the other two colleagues.
With the Black Talisman in hand, the Corpse Puppets were utterly unable to approach Chen Ying and the others. The moment they drew near, they were repelled by the black light, but the black light's coverage was limited. The group had to huddle together to ensure their bodies remained within the black light's embrace.
What none of them noticed, however, was that the black light enveloping them was gradually shrinking. The power unleashed by the Black Talisman was indeed formidable, but the continuous emission of black light was also consuming the talisman's inherent power. When the talisman stopped emitting black light, its power would be at an end.
Arriving before the bodies of the other two officers, the state of their corpses was even more gruesome. Seeing this, Chen Ying clamped a hand over her mouth to stifle her sobs.
As a police officer, she was not a fragile person, but in such a short time, three colleagues with whom she had worked side-by-side had sacrificed themselves before her. No matter how strong her heart, she couldn't help but shed tears now.
Helping the bodies of the remaining two officers upright, Chen Ying didn't leave immediately. Instead, her gaze fell upon Yang Haoran.
Chen Ying had always disliked Yang Haoran. Because she was a police officer, and in her eyes, Yang Haoran was nothing but a charlatan who swindled people. Such people were a cancer on society, and it was her duty to eradicate all such societal tumors.
Thus, whenever she saw Yang Haoran, her expression was never pleasant. While her attitude wasn't outright hostile, it certainly wasn't good.
However, the scenes unfolding before her now shook some of the beliefs she had always held dear. She had never believed in ghosts or spirits, but how could she explain these frenzied Corpse Puppets before her?
The shift in her perspective caused her views on Yang Haoran to change somewhat. She felt that perhaps she had always misjudged the man before her.
Chen Ying was a police officer, and her thought process was quite meticulous. The black talisman she clutched had appeared from a shattered pendant, and that pendant had been a gift from her boyfriend, Wang Yiming. He had even insisted that she wear it at all times. And Yang Haoran, this man she had always dismissed as a charlatan, was her boyfriend Wang Yiming's friend.
Considering this information, she felt that Yang Haoran might indeed possess some specialized knowledge, and her boyfriend, Wang Yiming, might not be as simple as he appeared on the surface. He must have been keeping many secrets from her.
Watching Yang Haoran being forced into a corner by numerous Corpse Puppets, and although he was resisting, he was clearly struggling more and more, Chen Ying hesitated for a moment, then shouted to Yang Haoran, "Hold on! We're coming to save you!"
Yang Haoran's brow furrowed. Doubt flickered in his eyes. He hadn't expected Chen Ying to still intend to save him under these circumstances.
Hadn't she always despised him?
Hadn't she always wished charlatans like him would drop dead sooner?
Before he could figure out what was happening, Chen Ying and the other officers charged towards him.
Upon contact with the black light, all the Corpse Puppets that had been dogging Yang Haoran were flung away. Not a single Corpse Puppet could withstand the black light for even a second. In the blink of an eye, all the Corpse Puppets in front of Yang Haoran were sent flying, crashing to the ground.
"Come on, let's go!"
Chen Ying's bloodied hand grabbed Yang Haoran, intending to pull him away, but Yang Haoran didn't budge.
Chen Ying's expression tensed. She turned to look at Yang Haoran, only to see him staring back at her with a serious expression, a hint of confusion in his eyes.
"Why are you saving me? " Yang Haoran asked. His voice held no joy, but rather a hint of coldness.
Chen Ying was stunned by Yang Haoran's question. She truly hadn't expected that in this situation, Yang Haoran wouldn't immediately flee with her, but instead ask such an idiotic question.
Her colleague's sacrifice filled her with immense grief, but Yang Haoran's reaction now turned that grief into rage.
"Are you f***ing stupid? ! Are you out of your mind? ! If it weren't for my duty, do you think I'd want to save your ass? !"
Chen Ying roared loudly at Yang Haoran. As a police officer, she had even let out profanity, which showed just how furious she was at that moment.
Yang Haoran was momentarily taken aback. At this critical juncture between life and death, Chen Ying's enraged roar made him re-evaluate the woman before him.
Though he had always been at odds with this woman, and their every encounter felt like a clash between enemies, he had to admit, Chen Ying was a good police officer.
"You should go. Hurry and leave this place while the talisman's power hasn't completely dissipated. Whatever you do, don't look back, don't stop. " Yang Haoran said to Chen Ying, his voice low and serious.
"If you stay here, you'll only die. Come on, let's go!"
With that, Chen Ying, regardless of Yang Haoran's willingness, forcibly pulled him, intending to leave.
However, she was surprised to find that she couldn't pull Yang Haoran at all.
"The protective barrier released by the Black Talisman is only so large; it can't accommodate anyone else."
Yang Haoran's words immediately gave Chen Ying a jolt. She hadn't noticed it before, but upon closer inspection now, it was exactly as Yang Haoran had said. The few of them had already filled the area enveloped by the black light, and indeed, there was no room for another person.
"Leave quickly! The Black Talisman's power won't last much longer. If you delay any further, none of you will make it out of Yangjiawan. If you truly want to fulfill your mission, then immediately report everything that happened here. Have your department quickly dispatch Spirit Police. Only with their timely intervention can these Corpse Puppets be prevented from escaping and harming more living beings."
