Chapter 106: Corpse Qi
Just as Yang Haoran opened the car door, ready to get in and leave the Liu Family Village, a place that filled him with immense awkwardness, Xu Meijing called out to him.
"Stop! " Xu Meijing's cold shout even carried a hint of a command.
Yang Haoran was already irritated, and being stopped by Xu Meijing with such a tone only fueled his anger. Still, he didn't let it show, suppressing his displeasure and turning to face Xu Meijing with an extremely unnatural smile.
He didn't speak, waiting for Xu Meijing to say something. But to his surprise, Xu Meijing not only remained silent but also activated her Ghost Eye on him.
"Heh, you're really quite boring, treating me like a ghost now?"
Yang Haoran's smile turned a little cold. After saying this, he ignored Xu Meijing completely. He got in, closed the door, started the engine, and stomped on the accelerator in one swift motion, disappearing in a puff of smoke.
Xu Meijing deactivated her Ghost Eye. Yang Haoran's attitude made her expression grim, but beyond the grimness, a trace of confusion flickered in her eyes.
Her sudden activation of the Ghost Eye on Yang Haoran wasn't an act of provocation. Rather, she had sensed an aura on Yang Haoran that wasn't Yin Qi.
They were both members of the Underworld Office; the power within their bodies was Spirit Power, and the aura they emitted was Yin Qi. Yet, just now, she had sensed an aura on Yang Haoran that did not belong to Yin Qi.
After activating her Ghost Eye, she saw the Death God Seal between Yang Haoran's brows, and also observed a strong layer of Yin Qi enveloping Yang Haoran's body. However, on the periphery of this strong Yin Qi, there was also a faint layer of gray gas.
Yin Qi appeared black, and the faint gray gas on Yang Haoran's body clearly did not belong to Yin Qi. As for what this faint gray gas was, Xu Meijing knew: it was Corpse Qi.
"A newcomer, barely had one infusion of Soul Qi and already acting so arrogant, truly a newborn calf unafraid of tigers, daring to provoke anything. Our Spirit Power strongly restrains spirits, but when facing zombies, which aren't spirits, you'll just end up suffering, hmph."
Xu Meijing watched Yang Haoran's SUV disappear from sight. After a cold huff, she turned and walked towards the courtyard.
Just then, a white-haired elderly grandmother emerged from the building, leaning on a walking stick.
Seeing this, Xu Meijing quickly pulled her hands from her pockets and jogged towards the grandmother.
"Grandma, why did you come out? " Xu Meijing shed her usual arrogance, asking with a worried expression.
"You're not young anymore, so your grandma arranged a blind date for you today. I was worried you might not be happy about it, so I didn't tell you," Grandma Xiao said with a smile.
Upon hearing this, Xu Meijing was first startled, then her face clouded with displeasure. She complained, "Grandma, why didn't you discuss something like this with me?"
Grandma Xiao's smile didn't falter as she asked, "If I discussed it with you, would you agree?"
"No! " Xu Meijing's answer was direct. She didn't even hesitate for a moment before giving her response, her tone extremely firm.
"Exactly! Grandma knew you wouldn't agree, so I just decided on my own. This is for your own good, so please don't blame your grandma," Grandma Xiao said, smiling.
Xu Meijing didn't reply, but her face still showed a hint of resentment; she seemed utterly repulsed by the idea of blind dates.
Grandma Xiao observed Xu Meijing's reaction and continued to smile, "Your grandma's biggest wish right now is to see you married into a good family while I'm still alive. Your grandma is old, and I'm afraid I won't live to see that day, so I'm very anxious."
Xu Meijing, who had been full of resentment moments before, heard Grandma Xiao's words and her expression subtly changed. The resentment vanished, replaced by a hint of melancholy. However, this melancholic expression didn't last long, quickly being hidden away.
"Grandma, trust me, you'll live to be a hundred," Xu Meijing said to Grandma Xiao with a smile.
"Heh heh, stop trying to sweet-talk this old woman. If you're truly filial, you'll settle your marriage quickly. Don't make this old woman wait too long. Get it done while you're young, don't wait until you're past your prime before thinking about marriage; it'll be too late then," Grandma Xiao said with a smile, earnestly advising Xu Meijing.
"I'm still so young, being past my prime has nothing to do with me. What's there to rush? " Xu Meijing retorted dismissively.
"You're not in a hurry now, but when you are, it will be too late. Don't worry, the blind date I found for you this time is definitely not bad. He's a big boss, young and promising, you'll definitely like him," Grandma Xiao said, her face filled with anticipation.
Xu Meijing wanted to refute, but seeing her grandmother's hunched figure and old, wrinkled face, she ultimately held her tongue.
"That Yang boy, why isn't he here yet? His mother called me early this morning and said he was driving over. Their Yangjiawan is right next door to our village. Logically, given how much time has passed, he should have arrived even if he walked, let alone drove. Could something have happened to him on the way?"
Grandma Xiao looked outside the courtyard, her face showing both confusion and worry.
The speaker had no intention, but the listener paid close attention. Hearing that her blind date for today was surnamed Yang, Xu Meijing seemed to realize something, and her expression changed again.
"Grandma, that Yang boy you mentioned, is his name Yang Haoran? " Xu Meijing asked Grandma Xiao, her expression a little strange.
"Yes, that boy's name is Yang Haoran. It's embarrassing to admit, but when I was talking to his mother that day, I was so focused on talking about your background and your virtues that I forgot to even tell her your name. She, on the other hand, was more thoughtful and told me all the necessary information."
At this point, Grandma Xiao suddenly thought of something. She looked at Xu Meijing, full of doubt, and asked, "I never told you about this, how do you know his name is Yang Haoran?"
Grandma Xiao's words made Xu Meijing's expression become quite colorful. She had thought Yang Haoran had simply coincidentally appeared here because he sensed the Yin Qi, but she never imagined that annoying fellow was actually here for a blind date, and the date was her!
"He already came earlier, but I already told him to get lost," Xu Meijing replied, a look of disdain on her face.
"What? ! " Grandma Xiao looked startled, then quickly asked, "He came for a blind date, why would you chase him away? That's so impolite! If word gets out, it'll be even harder for you to get married in the future!"
"Grandma, I've known that Yang Haoran for a long time. He's a smiling tiger with a dagger hidden in his smile, the most repulsive kind of person. How could I possibly go on a blind date with someone like that? So I just kicked him out."
Grandma Xiao was astonished. She hadn't expected Xu Meijing to already know Yang Haoran, nor had she imagined Yang Haoran would be so utterly despicable in Xu Meijing's eyes.
"Are you telling the truth? " Grandma Xiao still found it hard to believe.
"Grandma, do you believe me, or do you believe an outsider? " Xu Meijing asked.
"You're my granddaughter, of course I believe you," Grandma Xiao replied firmly.
"It's good that you believe me. That Yang Haoran is incredibly hypocritical. I'd rather never marry than marry such a calculating and two-faced person in this life," Xu Meijing stated with certainty.
Grandma Xiao hadn't realized Xu Meijing's opinion of that Yang boy was so strong. She shook her head with a sigh and said,
"Ah, your grandma's original intention was to find you a good husband, but I never expected to find someone like that. It's true that one may know a person's face but not their heart. Since that Yang boy is so disgraceful, let's forget about this blind date. Anyway, you've already chased him away. If his mother calls to ask later, I'll just say you two met but weren't a match."
After speaking, Grandma Xiao, a look of disappointment on her face, leaned on her walking stick and, with Xu Meijing's support, walked into the house.
Seeing that Grandma Xiao no longer brought up Yang Haoran, Xu Meijing, on the other hand, cast aside the disdain and disgust from her face. Her brows furrowed deeply as she looked towards the outside of the courtyard, in the direction Yang Haoran's car had left earlier.
"Corpse Qi. . . could that annoying guy have made some major discovery again?"
Thinking this, Xu Meijing retracted her gaze, then actively asked Grandma Xiao, "Grandma, did you just say Yang Haoran is from the neighboring Yangjiawan?"
Grandma Xiao didn't think much of it and nodded, "Yes, he's from our neighboring Yangjiawan. Since he's so close, that's why I agreed to let that boy come for the blind date. This way, if you like him, it'll be easier for you to visit your grandma in the future, at least better than marrying someone from far away."
Seeing Grandma Xiao bring up the blind date again, Xu Meijing looked helpless. However, this time she didn't dwell on the issue, instead continuing to ask, "Grandma, has anything strange happened in Yangjiawan recently?"
"Strange things? " Grandma Xiao thought for a moment, then shook her head, "I haven't heard of any strange things. But this morning when his mother called, she said his second uncle was bitten by a poisonous snake yesterday while chopping wood on the mountain and died from the poison. That's why his mother couldn't come today and just sent the boy alone, asking me to be more understanding, but who would have thought you already knew him, and. . ."
Grandma Xiao continued speaking, but Xu Meijing didn't hear the rest of her words. Her brows furrowed tightly, her face filled with confusion.
"Bitten by a poisonous snake? Where would a poisonous snake come from this season? Died from poison? Bitten and died from poison?"
Xu Meijing pondered with furrowed brows. Suddenly, she recalled the faint gray gas that had enveloped Yang Haoran's body, beyond the Yin Qi. As if she had guessed something, her expression abruptly changed to one of shock!
