Chapter 1049: Stronger Than the Previous!

Among the Night Watchers present, apart from Shui Ling and Lu Wu, the others had very limited strength. After all, they were all new recruits, and neither their combat experience nor their internal Spirit Power could naturally compare to that of captains Shui Ling and Lu Wu.

Although they couldn't compare to Shui Ling and Lu Wu, that didn't mean they lacked any destructive power. As long as they weren't pitted against Corpse Ghouls, they still possessed fighting capability against ordinary Corpse Puppets, much like Yang Haoran when he first became a Night Watcher.

The battle commenced. Under the Cripple's control, all the Corpse Puppets targeted Shui Ling and her group, while the Corpse Ghouls present launched a full assault on Yang Haoran.

In the Cripple's view, dealing with Night Watchers who hadn't even opened their Heaven Souls didn't warrant deploying Corpse Ghouls; that would be a waste of resources. After all, Night Watchers of that caliber weren't yet qualified for him to unleash Corpse Ghouls. The number of Corpse Puppets he'd brought this time was staggering, and they were more than enough to handle Yang Haoran's Night Watchers.

As for the more powerful Corpse Ghouls, those were reserved for Yang Haoran, the Emissary of Death!

Currently, he had a total of four Corpse Ghouls. Although their strengths varied, without exception, none were newly spawned; the weakest had been cultivated in his hands for two years, and the most formidable one he had even nurtured for nearly a decade. With such a powerful force, he believed capturing Yang Haoran would be absolutely no problem!

Under his control, the four Corpse Ghouls lunged towards Yang Haoran from four directions. They wielded no conventional weapons; their sharp claws, pointed teeth, and impervious bodies were their armaments. Neither their sharpness nor their durability could be matched by ordinary weapons.

The air split with a ripping sound, and a putrid stench assailed his nostrils. The four Corpse Ghouls moved with blistering speed, reaching Yang Haoran in the blink of an eye, their fangs and claws already aimed at his body.

Yang Haoran, on the other hand, showed not the slightest inclination to dodge. He stood his ground, not moving a single step, his expression unchanging, a faint smile still playing on his lips, appearing utterly composed.

This sight, falling into the Cripple's eyes, caused his brows to furrow in an involuntary frown.

He had been confident that his four Corpse Ghouls could take down Yang Haoran, but Yang Haoran's composure left him feeling uncertain.

He believed that Yang Haoran dared to be so audacious either because he possessed absolute confidence in his own strength, or because he was a fool.

Since Yang Haoran was capable of becoming an Emissary of Death, and had moreover been dispatched by the Underworld Office to Gu Mo City to clean up this mess in the current situation, it proved that Yang Haoran certainly wasn't a fool. The Underworld Office wouldn't allow a fool to become an Emissary of Death, much less send one here to die and bring shame upon them.

Therefore, he concluded that Yang Haoran must have absolute confidence in his own strength, which was why he dared to be so presumptuous.

No sooner had this conjecture formed in his mind than the four Corpse Ghouls' attacks landed on Yang Haoran's body.

The instant the four Corpse Ghouls' attacks struck Yang Haoran, a thick, inky black Yin Qi suddenly burst forth from within him. The dark Yin Qi collided with the greyish-white Corpse Qi, the latter instantly dispersed, and the four Corpse Ghouls were sent flying by this sudden surge of Yin Qi.

The Cripple's expression drastically changed. Yang Haoran's composure had made him suspect that he might not be easy to deal with, perhaps even possessing some genuine skill, otherwise he wouldn't be so arrogant. But what he hadn't anticipated was that Yang Haoran's strength was far greater than he had imagined.

He knew better than anyone how formidable these four Corpse Ghouls he'd raised were. Even the previous Emissary of Death, facing these four Corpse Ghouls simultaneously, might not have been defeated quickly, but certainly wouldn't have had an easy time, and it would have been utterly impossible to force them back so effortlessly. How could this not shock him?

"If this fellow isn't secretly using some other trick to deliberately scare me, then his strength must surely surpass that of the previous Emissary of Death!"

The Cripple's face was grim as he mused inwardly. Towards Yang Haoran, this newly appointed Emissary of Death, he now harbored more vigilance and less contempt than before.

The Corpse Ghouls' bodies were impervious to weapons and exceedingly tough. Although they hadn't injured Yang Haoran and had been sent flying, they hadn't sustained much damage.

Had it been the Saintly Power of the Saint Mother Sect, these four Corpse Ghouls wouldn't have had such an easy time, because Saintly Power has a strong suppressive effect on such dark forces. However, the Underworld Office's Spirit Power had no such suppression over Corpse Qi, nor did Corpse Qi suppress Spirit Power. When these two forces clashed, it was purely a test of brute strength; neither side gained an inherent advantage, only the stronger one would prevail.

After forcing the four Corpse Ghouls back, Yang Haoran didn't pursue. Instead, he waved his hand, setting up a protective barrier in the distance.

"Lead the ordinary believers inside. Don't let these zombies harm them."

Yang Haoran smiled faintly at Shui Ling. His voice wasn't loud, but it clearly reached the ears of everyone present.

Upon hearing Yang Haoran's words, every one of these ordinary Death God believers showed expressions of excitement and gratitude. As devout followers, they did not fear death, but to receive the attention and care of a divine emissary made them feel incredibly honored and proud.

Yang Haoran did this partly because these believers themselves possessed no power. Without adequate protection, many of them would likely meet a tragic end here today.

He already had fewer than two hundred believers left. If some more of them died, the number of believers would dwindle even further. Once he had no one, who would do his bidding then?

Moreover, as an Emissary of Death, he couldn't simply stand by and watch these believers die before his eyes. Even if he wasn't a devout believer himself, nor a fully qualified Underworld Official, he was still in the position of an Emissary of Death, and there were some things he simply had to do.

Since these believers trusted him so implicitly, he naturally couldn't let them down.

As for the Night Watchers present, he had no intention of having them hide within the protective barrier. They were different from ordinary believers; they possessed power, and thus they had to go to battle and kill enemies. Casualties were inevitable, and without the baptism of blood, it would be impossible for them to grow. While this approach might seem cruel, such was reality: survival of the fittest.

Before these new recruits became Night Watchers, he had thoroughly explained the pros and cons to them, and only then allowed them to make their choice. They could choose to become Night Watchers, or they could refuse. Since they had ultimately chosen to become Night Watchers, they had to confront this harsh reality.

This was akin to soldiers: once you chose to join the army, you had to be prepared to face war at any moment, and even be ready to die on the battlefield. If one lacked even this basic awareness, it was best not to step foot into the military camp.

"Death is at your doorstep, and you still have time to care about these ordinary people!"

The Cripple spoke in a low voice. As his words fell, the four Corpse Ghouls who had been sent flying let out a roar and lunged at Yang Haoran once more.

Meanwhile, under the protection of Shui Ling, Lu Wu, and the other Night Watchers, the ordinary believers present were quickly moved inside the protective barrier. Both ordinary believers and Night Watchers could freely enter this shield, but the zombies pursuing them could not; they were flung away by a powerful force the moment they approached the barrier.

"Night Watchers of the Second Division! If any of you are cowardly and hide inside the barrier, just wait until I get my hands on you! This is our Second Division's best chance to prove ourselves. I want all of you to unleash everything you've learned in the past few days and give these half-human, half-ghost monstrosities a proper greeting! Do you hear me? !"

Currently, the Gu Mo City Underworld Office was divided into two small divisions. Shui Ling had been appointed by Yang Haoran as the captain of the First Division, and Lu Wu had been appointed as the captain of the Second Division. The one shouting at the top of his lungs right now was Lu Wu.

Not a single Night Watcher led by Lu Wu entered the barrier. After escorting the believers outside, they allowed the believers to enter on their own, while they continued to battle the attacking Corpse Puppets.

Although Lu Wu saw all this, he still sounded a warning bell for his Night Watchers, to prevent any cowards from actually appearing. If they did, he would lose immense face, and then he wouldn't have the audacity to face Yang Haoran, the Emissary of Death.

"Yes, Captain! ! !"

No sooner had Lu Wu's roar subsided than the uniform, powerful responses of the Second Division's Night Watchers echoed from all directions!
