Chapter 716: Meat

"..."

Having survived the ordeal, Lun Heping, still reeling from the shock, didn't know what to say for a moment. He only felt a little dizzy, his body weak, his legs so soft he couldn't even stand up. With great difficulty, he managed to crawl back into bed. His older sister, standing before him, was like a different person, leaving Lun Heping at a loss.

"You... are you still my sister?"

"Scram! You little punk, you don't even recognize me anymore, do you? I should've known better than to save you just now." Lun Qin carefully suppressed her breathing, yet forced herself to adopt a ferocious expression. Being doubted, she was somewhat furious, but terrified that one careless exhale, too forceful, would blow her idiotic younger brother away. The sudden acquisition of hundreds of times human strength was not a pleasant sensation; a significant portion of Lun Qin's attention had to be focused on controlling her body. After all, the clothes she wore could hardly withstand such abuse; simply preventing them from ripping apart was already taking all her effort.

...

"Die!"

Yu Nan squeezed out the last ounce of strength from his arm, brutally plunging the blade, already soaked in blood and slick with gore, into the monster's body. The butterfly-shaped monster struggled desperately, but Yu Nan pinned it to the ground with his weight, the knife stubbornly embedded and ceaselessly twisting within its flesh. After frantically flailing for a full half-minute, the monster slowly went limp. But Yu Nan wasn't reassured. He forcibly resisted the dizziness brought on by blood loss and stabbed it another twenty or thirty times, until it was completely hacked into pieces before finally dropping the knife from his hand. Though his lungs desperately gasped for every wisp of air, he still felt his vision darkening.

"Can't sleep! I've made such thorough preparations, how can I die right at the beginning!!!"

Yu Nan gritted his teeth and held on tight. However, this was merely the body of an ordinary person, perhaps even one suffering from malnutrition; to be able to kill a monster at the cost of severe injuries was already a stroke of immense luck. Without timely treatment, the six or seven wounds on his body, still profusely bleeding, would be enough to claim his life.

"Meat?"

After he rummaged out his first-aid kit and simply bandaged his wounds, Yu Nan discovered that the monster's entire corpse, which had been there moments ago, was now nothing more than a puddle of water, with only a strange, fleshy object remaining. As a Reincarnator with a fair amount of experience, no longer a complete novice, he immediately realized that this must be a treasure dropped after killing the monster. What solidified this idea for him was the fervent craving every cell in his body felt for the piece of meat before him, completely disregarding the fact that it was still raw meat submerged in a puddle. It was a very peculiar sensation. His instincts told him this thing was incredibly useful, and delicious too, but years of ingrained experience kept reminding Yu Nan that raw meat, dropped from a monster's body and soaking in water, was absolutely not something a normal person should eat. However, he clearly trusted his instincts—perhaps his rationality had been largely eroded by excessive blood loss. He scooped up the fleshy object, without caring about the monster's lingering fluids still on it, and directly stuffed it into his mouth.

His taste buds exploded!

Every pore on his body exploded!

Yu Nan recalled a strange world he had once visited, where chefs were revered above all else. The people in that world pursued culinary delight with unparalleled zeal, and their cooking skills were masterful. The very best among them had already reached the pinnacle of the extraordinary, just below true transcendence; their sense of taste was even capable of subtly influencing their other senses. But it couldn't compare to the piece of meat in his mouth at all. The experience of eating this meat was like being immersed in an entirely new, illusory world, where his entire body felt utterly comfortable. That sensation was as if every blocked pore had been forcibly pried open, and then menthol balm poured inside.

...

When he returned from the clouds back to reality, more than half an hour had passed.

"My wounds, they're all healed?!?!?!"

The minor and major wounds, which had only been simply bandaged and not thoroughly treated, had now miraculously healed completely, their miraculous effect comparable to the Main God's one-click restoration.

"A-grade Divine Artifact, Investiture of the Gods Sword Set." This information suddenly flashed through Yu Nan's mind.

"Summon!" With a thought, a suit of armor and a longsword automatically equipped themselves onto him.

"This world is anything but simple."

It was a golden full body armor that appeared rather exaggerated and bulky, but Yu Nan felt not the slightest inconvenience or weight while wearing it, as if it had been custom-made for him. The longsword in his hand, adorned with classical patterns, just by looking at the cold gleam on its blade, one knew it was a fine weapon capable of slicing through iron like mud.

"I wonder if it can block bullets? If I put it up for sale with the Main God, it'd probably fetch a good price..." This exaggerated armor gave him no small amount of confidence; he had just tried stabbing it with an ordinary knife, and it had bent the stainless steel blade.

Yu Nan did have a gun he'd acquired from the black market, but with the apocalypse nearing, he wasn't willing to waste a precious bullet on testing how tough he was.

"Too many mysteries. Why could monsters appear directly inside my rented apartment, and why could killing them yield something called a Divine Artifact?"

Many others were suddenly attacked by monsters, just like him, but most of them died at the monsters' hands with little resistance. And the corpses of these dead people had now turned into zombies, wandering all over the ground floor below Yu Nan's apartment...

...

"Sis, look downstairs, there are so many twisted, walking monsters!"

Lun Heping forcibly suppressed the panic in his heart, trying to find the only person he could still rely on for help.

"Those are already zombies, aren't they...?"

In the midst of their conversation, she also noticed a woman constantly fleeing below. After being caught and bitten a few times by the zombies, her body convulsed several times, then she sprang up and joined the ranks of the undead.

Their home was over ten floors up in the apartment building. The zombies shambling around downstairs temporarily posed no threat to either of them, but it was clear that something was terribly wrong.

"Bang, bang, bang!" Lun Qin immediately returned to her room and vigorously thumped the coffin resting on her bed.

Bai Mo, lying inside, glanced at her.

"I have many questions."

"First, what exactly are those monsters?

Second, what is this lump of meat?

Third, what are those things downstairs?

..."

She felt certain Bai Mo knew the answers.

"The lump of meat is a Divine Artifact Seed left behind after killing them." Bai Mo selectively answered only one question.

"Divine Artifact Seed? Is it like my Zero-Time Child?"

"Correct, but each person can only possess one Divine Artifact."

"What if I eat this one too?"

"Bang!"

A simple onomatopoeia.
