The ship cut through the waves of the sea, the land rolling past us on the port side of the ship as a hazy landmass.
I leaned against the ship’s railing and looked out at the sea, lost in my thoughts.
I was thinking that I was actually going to arrive at the Aerialla Academy soon, the place where one would go to learn advanced magic... Magic that could level cities and mountains...
Ok, yeah, definitely not on that scale and it’s not guaranteed since it’s more dependent on the mage’s talents for the magic in question but this was definitely where I had to go to learn advanced magic.
We were expected to reach the next port in a few days and we’ve already been at sea for two days.
In these past two days, I’ve learned quickly that the merchant who hired us was someone who definitely did not like to interact with people that he deemed lower than himself.
He has a second in command who happens to be a male Inugami and he does all the talking for his boss, and his boss barely even talks to him to begin with.
In the rare moments that he does, he speaks to him like he was speaking to someone that was low in status as compared to him.
I’m assuming he must pay pretty good for that Inugami to stick with that guy despite how he’s being treated.
As I continued to lean on the railing, I heard footsteps coming from behind and I turned to see Lilith approaching me, the former Mayor of the city looking quite at ease despite the sudden change in her living conditions.
Also... She doesn’t seem to mind the crew practically ogling at her given that she was barely dressed with most of her skin showing and her manhood practically exposed with the bulge pressing against the front of her dress.

I would join them but my presence would distract them, which was why I was standing here at the aft of the ship and away from them.

Before I could even say anything, Lilith quickly took back her sketchbook and looked at it with a critical eye.

I have a feeling she has been hanging around Minnera too much in just these few days... She probably got treated to Minnera’s entire gallery of artwork that she had made dedicated to me and now she sees it as a challenge to draw me as well...

Before I could voice that out, a bell suddenly started to ring across the deck.
That was the alarm bell that signalled we were under attack.
I immediately spun back around and looked out to see, trying to look for any pirate ships that might be trying to close in on us.
But even as I looked, the seas ahead of me remained empty of any other ships so I thought that the person ringing the bell had done so by mistake until a voice shouts out from the crow’s nest.
"Merfolk pirates to starboard bow!!"
I shifted my gaze towards the front of the ship and sure enough, there were several figures swimming through the water headed towards us.
I wondered how they knew they were pirates but decided not to ask, instead, I readied myself for battle just like everyone else on the ship.
"Don’t let them get close to the ship!! Mages, fire!!" The Inugami who was the second in command ordered.
A few of the deckhands pointed their palms towards the group of Merfolk and fired off several spells, most of them ending up completely ineffective as they struck the surface of the ocean and did not affect the Merfolk pirates at all.
I joined in with the group and cast my own magic as well, opting to use Geomancy and conjuring a large ball made of earth before reshaping it into a spike to fire it at the supposed pirates.
I watched as the projectile flew forward and pierced through the water, striking one of those Merfolk in the shoulder and causing him to recoil back in pain and disappearing into the depths of the sea.
Minnera joined me as she raised her gun, having opted to summon a machine gun this time, and pulled on the trigger.
The deckhands who were completely not used to the weapon jumped in surprise when her weapon filled the air with the sound of gunshots, her bullets piercing through the water and striking several of the Merfolk before the projectiles lost their penetrating power.
Despite the losses they were taking, the Merfolk pirates still pushed on, their figures moving through the water and getting even closer to us.
I idly wondered why they weren’t using the sea more to their advantage and just approach us from the bottom instead of getting our attention by swimming over to us while so close to the surfa--
"Boarding party!! Boarding party on the port side aft!!!" Someone shouted.
Sure enough, when I turned back, several figures leap out of the water and climbed over the railing of the ship, brandishing their weapons threateningly.
Shit... This group was a diversion while the group at the back was the real force meant to board this ship to seize it from us, using the people below decks as hostages while we were all gathered at the front of the ship.
There’s only one problem for them though... My succubus was still there.
She smirked at them as the Merfolk was momentarily distracted by her assets and didn’t even realise Lilith was trying to cast a spell before she materialised it.
A black red lightning shot out from her palm to strike against all three of those Merfolk that were with on the deck and sending them flying off the side of the ship.
However, more of them immediately leapt over to replace them, their weapons also ready and trying to flank around Lilith to get past her.
I let lightning course through my fingers and turned to them while Delmare and Minnera joined me at my sides.
