      It's the difference between Chinese Dao (saber) and Jian (straight sword), I believe.

      I'm not an expert but I'll try a basic explanation. I think that there's a cultural connotation. Much like how Song Shuhang doesn't want to be a bald Buddhist guy for essentially aesthetic reasons, he strongly prefers the jian over the dao. I think that the jian has connotations of being classy, noble, refined, whereas the dao would be barbaric, bloodthirsty, violent.
