    'Besieging Wei to Rescue Zhao' is a translation of a very famous ancient Chinese military strategy — "围魏救赵" (Wéi Wèi Jiù Zhào).

    It is one of the Thirty-Six Stratagems (三十六计) and also appears in the history of the Warring States period (战国时期).

    Origin :

    The story begins in 354 BC when the state of Wei besieged the capital of the state of Zhao (Handan). Zhao requested assistance from the state of Qi.

    Instead of directly attacking the Wei forces besieging Zhao, the Qi general Sun Bin instead attacked the Wei capital (Daliang). The Wei forces besieging Zhao were forced to retreat to save their own capital, and thus Zhao was saved without direct combat.
