        This is pretty old, however, I’ll just put this here for new readers like myself. He also said winning and losing in that world is very different than on earth. For a Gu master surviving is what constitutes as winning. So, although he may not have been confident in killing the Stone Monkey King I’m sure he was pretty confident in escaping.

      Wasn't that just a rough estimate based on his lack of information? I mean, it could just include risk, like if the monkey had moonlight absorbing Gu (just a guess. There may not be a thing like that) Then Fang Yuan wouldn't be able to deal any damage and had 0% chance. And he wouldn't ever handle it, if he couldn't even check the Gu. And that was a chance of loosing, not dying.
      It didn't even seem that lethal, with monkeys being NEETs.
      Even then, he needs to handle it all in less than a year, or the wolf tide will sweep him.
      So on the contrary, I believe that probing was to be expected, but luck isn't exactly on his side.
