      Everytime the narrator mentioned "he smiled intensely" after thinking about Dunn, or nighthawks or his siblings, that was him acting like a clown. Masking his true emotions and letting out a fake laugh and smile that could never reveal his true emotions.

          It's not a head cannon though. It was explained on the first chapter of Vol 2. How he figured out the principles of acting as a clown. It is quite evident and not speculation.

            Eh, it feels like head canon. You're probably right, but at the time it didn't feel like it.

            It doesn't help that my understanding of a 'clown' is evidently much different from the author's. It is a chinese book after all.

            I'm guessing the author was thinking more of the 2 masks that they use for theater logos. That isn't my immediate thought for clowns. I think of Ronald McDonald.
