    Did he loose his brains all of a sudden?

    Pretending to be ignorant will only get him scammed, or even paint a target on his back if he walks out with 400 pounds or something of equal value.

    Announcing his enmity of a possible sequence 5 to a group of strangers that he made think are all stronger than him? Its probable that someone will tidy him up to curry favor with such an individual. At the very least he should know well that nobody in some small backwater group will take the risk to protect him against such a threat.

    Also, he's basically broke. 400 pounds lands in his lap, and he wants to trade it for an obviously dangerous item that links to a hidden existence, for a less than 10% chance it "may" help, and a 90% chance to drive him insane?

    He's normally intelligent and cautious, wtf happened?

      They dont know who he offended so the chance of exposure is low and he doesnt wanna lie too much incase it interferes with his pathway.

      I also think hes overpaying and impulse buying the item...without running any divination either. Not best idea.
      However, since hes protected by the fog, the risks of using it are low and success chance should be higher so if he can get invaluable info even sometimes, he can trade or use to make himself stronger...it could very well be worth much more than he payed.

      As for acting weak...yeh that does seem to be not very thought out. Gotta show a little muscle so youre not easy target.

    But this choice is definitely strange... 400 pounds is a fairly big amount for Klein, and he didn't have to buy the item right now. After the meeting, he could have divined whether the item will benefit him or not above the gray fog, and then buy it in the next meeting. He didn't even haggle, even though the seller is desperately trying to get rid of the item... Considering the way the first volume played out, I am expecting something behind this harsh decision of Klein wiseacre
