Seeing as this is an era of information and just passing into mid-late industrial, books, newspapers and other such entertainment consisting of words on the printed page, are incredibly popular, and so anyone that is either an author or reporter, and is actually good means their fame will spread quickly. Private detective however, has a much more nuanced "fame."

Also, there's always a chance that there is simply people out there called Sherlock who have decided to become detectives. Yes, the chance is low but still there.
