Chapter 80: You Did Well... My Child

The moment Chen Ling's voice fell, the aura of judgment surged into the gun's barrel!

Simultaneously, Chen Ling felt his spirit rapidly wither, as if he had poured his entire being into his palm. In the dark, it felt as though an unseen force had locked onto the target through the muzzle of his gun.

As Jian Changsheng approached, every hair on his body stood on end. An unprecedented sense of crisis exploded within him. He looked at the approaching black muzzle, and it felt like the cold gaze of the God of Death itself.

Instinct screamed at him to dodge the attack, but his body couldn't react in time.

    Bang!

    Chen Ling pulled the trigger.

The Deconstruction Power transformed into a bullet and shot from the muzzle. There were no sparks, no explosive roar; it was as silent as a spectral arrow, instantly piercing Jian Changsheng's chest.

Jian Changsheng felt his body go light. A fist-sized hole was all that remained of his chest. Looking down, he could even see the ground behind him through the gap. Everything hit by that bullet—including his heart—had been erased into nothingness.

He could no longer control his body. Swaying for two steps, he stumbled and fell before Chen Ling.

After firing the shot, Chen Ling's vision went dark. The intense overexertion of his spiritual power nearly caused him to faint on the spot. He had to grit his teeth and force his body to stay upright to keep from collapsing.
As expected, releasing the 8th-rank skill Judgment Court while still at the First-Tier was too much of a strain.

Furthermore, judging by the effect, he hadn't been able to expand a domain like Han Meng had. Instead, he could only condense a micro-domain near the barrel. The destructive power of the deconstruction bullet was only the size of a fist...

One had to remember that Han Meng had blasted the red paper monster's body with three shots, and the kill radius of each shot was ten times larger than Chen Ling's current attempt.

'Even if I can release a skill that exceeds my own rank at the First-Tier, the intensity will be greatly discounted. Is it restricted to my current level?' This thought flashed through Chen Ling's mind.

But the reality proved that even a weakened Judgment Court was enough to instantly kill almost any enemy of the same rank, such as Jian Changsheng.

    "You... you're a monster..."

A weak voice emerged from Jian Changsheng's throat. Perhaps due to his own abilities, he didn't die immediately even after his heart was destroyed. Instead, he stared fixedly at Chen Ling.

"I shouldn't... die here... I've only... just begun."

    "I... I can't accept this..."

His voice grew smaller and smaller until, finally, it sank into absolute silence. Yet, even in death, those eyes remained fixed on Chen Ling, as if trying to carve the man's face into his memory for the next life.

He died with eyes wide open.

It was only after confirming Jian Changsheng's death that Chen Ling finally let out a sigh of relief. This guy had been incredibly difficult to kill.

Injury didn't cause him pain; instead, he grew more ferocious the longer he fought. Chen Ling suspected that if he hadn't used the Judgment Court skill to finish him instantly, he might not have been Jian Changsheng's match if the fight had dragged on.

Chen Ling rested for a moment, finally recovering slightly from the brink of fainting. His gaze swept across the area, and he slowly began to move his feet toward 8, who lay in a pool of blood.

At this point, 8 had been beaten into something barely human by Jian Changsheng. Chen Ling searched through the mangled flesh for a while before finding the Military Path Divine Core Fragment clutched in 8's hand.

He reached out to take it, but found that 8 was still deathly still, gripping the fragment tight and refusing to let go.

"You're actually still alive?" Chen Ling remarked in surprise.

Although 8's body had been shattered, a faint trace of breath remained. His one remaining eye glared at Chen Ling through the blood and filth, his hand clutching the fragment with final, desperate stubbornness.

The eight Fire-Stealers had traveled countless miles from other realms specifically for this Military Path fragment. To obtain it, their entire team had been wiped out. This was the fruit they had paid for with their lives; how could they let Chen Ling reap the benefits at the very end?

"Let go," Chen Ling sighed. "Everyone else is dead. Do you really think you can turn things around?"

A flicker of despair flashed in 8's remaining eye, but he still didn't loosen his grip.

Chen Ling didn't try to pry the fragment from 8's hand again. Instead, he gently placed his palm over 8's blood-matted face and drew his gun with the other hand, pressing it against 8's temple.

Chen Ling could feel 8 trembling. Whether it was from fear, anger, or resentment, he didn't know.

"There, there," Chen Ling whispered. Draped in his Great Crimson Theatrical Robe, he crouched beside the mangled flesh, offering gentle comfort as if soothing a child.

    "You did well... my child."

    Bang!

The bullet pierced 8's skull, and his breath ceased completely.

Chen Ling moved his hand away. He had forced 8's eyelids closed, making it look as though he had passed away peacefully.

Using a dagger, Chen Ling pried open 8's stiff hand and retrieved the blood-stained Military Path Divine Core Fragment. He stood up slowly. The breeze caught the hem of his blood-red theatrical robe, making it flutter in the silent wilderness like vermillion flames from the underworld.

'Is the performance not over yet?' Chen Ling pondered for a moment, then came to a realization.

    'Right... I'm not dead yet.'

He was the final winner and the sole survivor on this stage.

And the ultimate condition for the performance was "No One Survived."

Chen Ling glanced at the words outlined in blood on the ground:

    Current Expectation Value: 65%

Since the performance began, the Audience Expectation Value had been slowly increasing as the play progressed. However, the plot points that truly accumulated value were his transformation using the Bai Qi Command Tablet and his instigation of the fight between the Law Enforcers and the Fire-Stealers.

Just killing Yan Xicai to seize the ritual artifact ring, and appearing after Jian Changsheng's trio thought they had won to fight them one-against-three, had netted him nearly 30 points of Expectation Value.

Harvesting 8's life just now had added another 5 points.

'Everyone is dead. Where am I going to get another 5 points?' Chen Ling felt a bit of a headache. If he had known, he would have designed more plot points to let these corpses contribute a bit more value.

Chen Ling's gaze swept over the field of corpses, finally landing on the mysterious, unknown darkness deep within the Ancient Vault of the Military Path.

There was only one path left.

Chen Ling checked the time. There was still a short period before the Ancient Vault of the Military Path would close. He immediately set off, walking toward the depths of the sanctuary.

    Five-Person Gully, Ten-Person Gully, Fifteen-Person Gully, Twenty-Person Gully... Fifty-Person Gully.

As Chen Ling ventured deeper, the soldier spawn points became increasingly massive. Once he passed the Fifty-Person Gully, he saw a prominent stone tablet standing tall upon the grayish-white earth.

"Trial Boundary. Strictly no forward movement."

Crossing this tablet meant leaving the trial area designated by Aurora City and entering the depths of the Ancient Vault. The area ahead was clearly not intended to be open to newcomers like them.

Chen Ling stood before the tablet, lingering for a brief moment before continuing forward. The instant his foot crossed the boundary of the trial area, a faint current of warmth flowed from his chest.

Startled, Chen Ling reached into his robes and pulled out the heating object.

It was the Bai Qi Command Tablet.
