      From my understanding, merit and karma is paramount to cultivation in this world. You could probably think of it as money, merit is money you currently have and karma is creditor and debtor relationship.

      If you don't actively spend merit, then nothing happens, it doesn't grow and would eventually be emptied out if not spent wisely. So these kinds of confrontations between cultivators is forming karma and using merit to earn more merit or luck, and so on and so forth.
