Chapter 899 - Fortifications

Kyle looked at the battle and remembered one of the rules for members of Humanity. In the beginning, this rule had seemed a bit overblown, but now he understood why the rule was there.

‘When in combat territory, if you are not specifically ordered to kill Demons, you are not allowed to join any battles or help any other member. This is to ensure a timely execution of your orders.’ Kyle repeated in his head.

‘I thought it wouldn’t be that bad. So what if there are a couple of battles? You would stillarrive on time. But...’

Kyle looked at the battles.

Three battles finished, and two more battles started.

Five battles finished, and six more battles started.

Two finished and two started.

‘It’s unending,’ Kyle thought. ‘If you join every battle you can see, you will be fighting untilyour longevity runs out.’

Kyle took a deep breath. Despite his many years, he hadn’t been involved in a true battle on a frontline. In the Tertiary World, he had only been on one of the frontlines once, but this had been more of a siege from both sides. They hadn’t truly charged at each other.

In the Supreme World, he had been involved in several battles between Organizations in the Secondary Sector, but those were singular battles. The wars themselves only existed for seconds or minutes.

This was an actual war, and even for an actual war, this war was crazy.

A constant tide of attackers. Millions, if not billions, of beasts charged towards Humanity every single day.

Kyle was not someone who cared a lot about the lives of strangers, but even he felt solemn as he watched the battles.

A valiant Crusher with a shield jumped in front of a ranged attacker. The darkness laser from the Demon broke the shield and removed the Crusher’s chest. The attack had been weakened enough that the ranged attacker managed to survive. The ranged attacker gritted his teeth and shouted the Crusher’s name as he launched more attacks at the Demon.

In another battle, a woman with half of a body rammed her spear into a Demon’s head. The prepared attack of the Demon detonated inside its mouth, destroying its head and the attacking woman. Her comrades saluted her.

A man with a mace struck the head of a Demon. A spear-like appendage crushed his his body at the same time. His comrades attacked the Demon with greater ferocity.

‘Every single one of these people has lived for thousands of years. They have won countless battles and were hailed as geniuses in their former Mortal Empires. They entered Humanity and successfully got through the several dangerous training periods. They’ve earned and spent Military Merits.’

‘And now, they are dying in droves. In the greater scheme of things, each death is meaningless. One more or less death won’t make any difference. Yet, when they are all put together, they are meaningful.’

‘Every single sacrifice buys some more time for Humanity.’

‘A world bought with the blood of its inhabitants.’

Kyle looked back towards the west. ‘I‘ve not seen a single Demon in the lands of Ayuvar. To Mortals, this world seems relatively peaceful. Every Mortal Empire faces threats, but these threats rarely come from another Mortal Empire. In that way, the lands seem almost like a paradise for Mortals.’

‘Yet, the Mortals can only live in this peace because of the ever-increasing number of human sacrifices.’

As Kyle watched the battles, he noticed that not a single person fought passively. All of them were going all out. They were fighting for their lives, and more importantly, for the lives of everyone else.

‘The past has fought for our present, and our present fights for our future.’

Kyle sighed. ‘I can see why so many people from the Supreme World decided to forego all rules to help Ayuvar.’

Kyle looked towards the east and narrowed his eyes.

He teleported again. By now, he had to teleport diagonally upwards due to the mounting number of corpses.
After his teleportation, he finally saw the true face of the Corpse Mountains.

An uncountable number of corpses of different sizes were oozing blood, which flowed into the mountain of corpses through the gaps. An unimaginably dense storm of decaying Biological Energy rose from the corpses. Due to the constant presence of death, the Biological Energy partially turned into Poison Energy. The fresh corpses decayed at greater speeds.

The Corpse Mountains themselves were not unmoving. The corpses shifted as old corpses below them decomposed, destabilizing the corpses stacked on top of them.

The size of the corpses had reduced a lot. That was because these Demons weren’t trying to sneak past the frontlines.
They kept themselves small and compact to increase their speed and power.

By now, Kyle could also see the occasional team of Sages.’The frontlines work like a funnel. Spirit Lords are at the coast of the Divide, attacking every Spirit Beast they find. The weaker beasts rush past them, and later, they’re engaged by the Sages, Crushers, and Primals. There are almost no Transcendent Demons or weaker.’

The strongest protect the strong from the strongest. The strong protect the average from the strong. The average protect the weak from the average.

Kyle looked towards the east and teleported again.

The surroundings didn’t change a lot. The number of battles was still similarly high, but the average strength of the combatants increased.

After some more teleportations, Kyle closed in on his goal, Fort S-878.

Fort S-878 was a humongous, flying sphere, covered in Formation Arrays. The Fortification was a bit over a thousand kilometers wide, and it was made of extremely dense and powerful materials. Even a weaker Ascendant Beast would need more than one attack to destroy it.

As Kyle felt the Energy emanating from the Fort, he could confirm one of the things he had read.

‘There are ancient Forts, old Forts, and new Forts. The ancient Forts were all made by the second group from Inner World. The old Forts were made by the fifth group of Inner World. The new Forts were all made by the inhabitants of Ayuvar.’

‘The new Forts try to emulate the ancient and old Forts, but they can’t truly achieve the same standard. Even if you know how to make them, making them is not so easy. That makes the new Forts the weakest.’

‘The old Forts are the most powerful. The second group from Inner World hasn’t truly gone all out when helping Humanity. They still kept some secrets, which is why the ancient Forts are still better than the new Forts, but not as good as the old Forts. The fifth group of Inner World really went all-out when making the old Forts.’

‘Fort S-878 is an old Fort, and I can feel its raw power. I know a lot about Formation Arrays, but I don’t even know how anyone could possibly combine so many intricate and complicated Formation Arrays. It seems impossible to me.’

‘Sadly, not even the fifth group from Inner World had someone who knew the Major Law of Space. Otherwise, this thing would be almost indestructible, even in the face of a powerful Ascendant Beast.’

Kyle took another deep breath.

‘Our predecessors have really tried their best to save this world.’

Kyle’s eyes narrowed

    I used google lens to get the text then Manually spaced everything out in my text editor. I had the same issue with weird symbols replacing the quotes so I just did find and replace for them all and double checked against the og screenshot. I think I did okay, hopefully it's readable now for everyone. Reading this novel without the spacing is terrible.

  Chapter 900 – Unfathomable Target
  
  Kyle entered the Fort without any issues, and his emblem immediately received coordinates.
  
  Fort S-878 was mostly open space with a couple of buildings. Kyle could see a great number of groups charging in and out of the Fort. It looked about as busy as a beehive.
  
  Kyle landed in front of a smaller man who wore a grey uniform. His aura felt similar to the auras of the other Shields, but more powerful and profound. His emblem marked him as a Commander.
  
  This was his future boss, Commander Sirius Vult Meristo.
  
  Sirius Vult Meristo was a powerful Spirit Lord. In fact, he felt even more powerful than the other two Spirit Lords he had seen. Yet, according to his orders, Kyle was not allowed to share his true identity or his true mission with him. He had to act like a regular member of Humanity.
  
  "Black Sin Hammer 37, reporting for duty", Kyle transmitted. There was no time for normal conversations. To keep efficiency high, everyone had to talk via voice transmission here.
  
  The Commander scanned Kyle’s emblem for a moment.
  
  "Accepted," he transmitted like a machine. "Black Sin Hammer 37, your file states that your assigned kill count should be put at 50 times the standard. No matter if this is voluntary or not, Fort S-878 will follow this recommendation."
  
  "Here are your orders. You are ordered to start your Second Refinement immediately. During your Second Refinement, you are on Decimator duty. If you accept this order, swear the Decimator Oath. Refusal of this order will not come with any punishments, and your orders will be amended."
  
  Usually, refusing orders was not an option, but for the job of Decimator, this had to be an option.
  
  "I accept my orders," Kyle transmitted. "I solemnly swear that I have voluntarily decided to kill countless beasts of a lower Realm that have never attacked me or shown me any hostility. Humanity is not forcing me down this path. I chose this myself and will carry all the consequences."
  
  "Humanity thanks you for your sacrifice," the Commander transmitted. "Your sacrifice will save thousands of lives."
  
  Then, the Commander took the time to respectfully salute Kyle for his sacrifice.
  
  A Decimator’s duty was to kill as many Demons of a lower Realm as possible. Decimators were viewed almost as highly as Honorers.
  
  The biggest reason why the stronger Seekers allowed the weaker Demons to pass through was Karmic Luck. Yes, this was a war, but even during a war, excessively killing beings in a lower Realm came with negative Karmic Luck.
  
  This was especially bad here. After all, the Demons were all Divine Beasts. The punishment of killing a weaker Divine Beast was severe. Just one day of working as a Decimator would lead to the creation of a True Sin Aura.
  
  Being a Decimator represented destroying one’s Karmic Luck to an irrecoverable degree, which also meant that one would be subject to Sin Flames for the remainder of one’s life.
  
  The vast majority of people couldn’t live with Sin Flames. Because of that, they viewed the fates of Decimators as even worse than death. After all, a Decimator would continue suffering for their entire life.
  
  Ayuvar was one of the very few worlds in which people with True Sin Auras were viewed as heroes instead of monster.
  
  "Report back after you’ve finished your Second Refinement. Good hunting!" the Commander transmitted.
  
  Kyle nodded and pulled Energy out of the atmosphere. The Energy rushed into his head, and a moment later, he felt a burning pain. The Second Refinement had started.
  
  For a Mortal, this pain would be unbearable. However, for a Sage, this pain was like a standard headache. It was definitely bearable, but one also had to remember that the Sage had to feel the pain for an entire century. This was not a sprint but a marathon. That was why some Sages failed the Second Refinement on their first attempt.
  
  Yet, to Kyle, this pain barely made a difference. The overwhelming pain of his Sin Flames eclipsed the pain of the Second Refinement.
  
  As long as Kyle kept pulling Energy into his mind, the Second Refinement would continue operating. Luckily, he didn’t need to focus on it. After just a single second, his instincts took over. If he wanted to stop the Second Refinement, he would need to give a conscious command to his instincts.
  
  Then, Kyle flew out of Fort S-878.
  
  He had already checked his emblem, which contained all the details of his orders. ‘I need to fly and/or teleport a billion kilometers to the north before flying two billion kilometers to the south before flying two billion kilometers to the north and so on. While doing so, I’m supposed to kill as many Demons as possible. Their Realm is irrelevant. A Sage Demon is worth just as much as a Transcendent Demon to a Decimator.’
  
  When Kyle saw his assigned goal, he felt like he was in some kind of dream. The fact that he was supposed to do this didn’t feel real. It was difficult for him to believe that he would end that many lives, and it was even more difficult to believe that reaching this target wouldn’t even be that difficult.
  
  ‘Within one century, I’m supposed to kill 1.5 trillion Demons,’ Kyle thought. ‘This number is just unfathomably high, and yet, it’s actually realistic.’
  
  Earth had an area of a bit over 500 million square kilometers, and it had a lot of life on it. This world was ten trillion times ten trillion kilometers big, which meant it had an area of about 100 septillion square kilometers. That was a one with 26 zeros. This meant Ayuvar was 200 quadrillion times bigger than Earth. This meant that it probably also had 200 quadrillion times more lifeforms than Earth.
  
  There was a big gap between 1.5 trillion and 200 quadrillion. Additionally, the timeframe of the mission was not a single instant but an entire century.
  
  There were a bit more than three billion seconds in a century. As long as he killed 500 Demons every second, he would reach that number.
  
  Kyle’s Energy Sense covered a sphere with a radius of 25,000 kilometers. Within that area, there were bound to be more than 500. Demons, and even if there weren’t, he could still teleport several times in a second.
  
  In order to kill a Transcendent or Primal Demon, Kyle would just need to create a tiny fireball beside them. As a Sage, conjuring 500 weak attacks every second was not very difficult. He wouldn’t even need to focus a lot.
  
  Killing 1.5 trillion beasts felt unreal and unreasonable to Kyle. Yet, as he looked at the numbers, he realized that it was actually realistic and feasible.
  
  As soon as he left the Fort, Kyle looked at his surroundings. Fort S-878 was pretty close to the eastern border of the frontlines, which meant the majority of battles were fought between Sages and Sage Demons. However, there were also a couple of battles between weaker Demons and some weaker teams.
  
  Yet, even though there was a great number of battles, there was an even greater number of Primal and Crusher Beasts rushing past the individual battles.
  
  These were Kyle’s targets.
  
  Kyle targeted around 300 Primal Divine Beasts.

  300 explosions happened simultaneously, but barely anyone noticed.
  
  At the same time, Kyle saw a huge wave of red washing towards him.

  ’Well, there go my chances of ever getting positive Karmic Luck again,’ Kyle thought. ‘The next century will probably cripple my Karmic Luck for all of eternity.’
  
  ‘Yeah, well, the Karmic Luck system is broken anyway. I am literally saving countless lives, and yet, I’m seen as an irredeemable sinner.’

200 quadrillion times bigger than Earth. This meant that it probably also had 200 quadrillion
times more lifeforms than Earth.
There was a big gap between 1.5 trillion and 200 quadrillion. Additionally, the timeframe of
the mission was not a single instant but an entire century.
There were a bit more than three billion seconds in a century. As long as he killed 500
Demons every second, he would reach that number.
Kyle's Energy Sense covered a sphere with a radius of 25,000 kilometers. Within that area,
there were bound to be more than 500. Demons, and even if there weren't, he could still
teleport several times in a second.
In order to kill a Transcendent or Primal Demon, Kyle would just need to create a tiny
fireball beside them. As a Sage, conjuring 500 weak attacks every second was not very
difficult. He wouldn't even need to focus a lot.
Killing 1.5 trillion beasts felt unreal and unreasonable to Kyle. Yet, as he looked at the
numbers, he realized that it was actually realistic and feasible.
As soon as he left the Fort, Kyle looked at his surroundings. Fort S-878 was pretty close to
the eastern border of the frontlines, which meant the majority of battles were fought
between Sages and Sage Demons. However, there were also a couple of battles between
weaker Demons and some weaker teams.
Yet, even though there was a great number of battles, there was an even greater number of
Primal and Crusher Beasts rushing past the individual battles.
These were Kyle's targets.
Kyle targeted around 300 Primal Divine Beasts.
BOOOOM!
300 explosions happened simultaneously, but barely anyone noticed.
At the same time, Kyle saw a huge wave of red washing towards him.
Negative Karmic Luck.
Well, there go my chances of ever getting positive Karmic Luck again,' Kyle thought. The
next Century will probably cripple my Karmic Luck for all of eternity.'
'Yeah, well, the Karmic Luck system is broken anyway. I am literally saving countless lives,
and yet, I'm seen as an irredeemable sinner.'

Then, Kyle teleported forward before destroying another 250 Primal Demons.
And again.
And again.
And again.

First ocr was onlineocr, second was a9t9 free ocr software. Both suck ass. The first one made a lot ",'" into ":". The second one missed 2 or 3 words, but can separate paragraphs much better than the first one where i had to separate sentences. However in the second one you cant copy and have to save into text file and the UI is dogshi

Fortifications starting with an A were in the very back and rarely saw battle, while Fortifications starting with a Z were directly on the coast of the Divide. The numbers just dictated where the base was located from north to south. The northernmost was one, while the southernmost was over ten thousand.

So, doing a bit of math, we know that there are over 260.000 Fortifications. If the frontline is roughly 1 Million killometers across, then that means one would see a fort about every 100 km you travel alongside it, with corpses spread out everywhere.

Kyle thinks that every second, one Sage dies.
If we assume that for every 1 Sage (Seventh stage being) there are 10.000 Crushers (sixth stage being) and for every 1 Crusher there are 1.000 Primal (fifth stage being).

Every second there are dying...
1 Sage
10.000 Crusher
10.000.000 Primals

But that can not be true... right?

        Realm and specialization, but yes. I included the crushers in the calculation because Kyle saw mulitple instances of them fighting on the frontline. For the Primals, I admittedly just assmued that they also fight on the frontlines... or at least that enough of them have duties to attend there, that their deathtolls would still fit the bill.
