TL;DR This is the story about a character you hear about in a Shounen Xianxia story's background. The mythical senior who everyone had a hard stance on, who didnt show much love for his fellow humans, and wasn't the easiest person to be around, but was a person of the Dao. He cultivated for himself, was selfish, used people, yada yada. Most importantly, he's the kind of person who will succeed in the pursuit of the Dao.

I read this novel in Chinese up to chapter 450. First of all, I think the first 150 chapters of the book are very good, the characters feel very realistic, as if they are really alive.
