    From this it's likely meant that Obsidian challenged the Audience Chamber, beat the Future King and went to whatever world lay beyond. It was also mentioned in the story that a True Immortal truly dies when they stop dreaming.
    Crazy theory but:

    What if the world is a dream (in the same way as Penglai palace) that Obsidian made, and the way out is to beat the Audience Chamber to make it to the real world? And the reason True Immortals "truly die" when they "stop dreaming" is likely because they've fully left the boundaries of Indra's Net, beyond the normal reincarnation that occurs, and transcended to a different place (i.e Earth or some higher realm). Hong Fan could also just be a remnant of Obsidian in which their only goal is to prevent anyone from escaping his Liberation.
    It's unlikely but with the amount of plot twists the author introduces I wouldn't be surprised if this was true.



    Either way, whether I'm wrong or right; what on earth would cause him to make his way back into Mount Sumeru and choose to stay as a measly insect inside the Head Realm, with all his power suppressed and memories sealed.

      2nd Theory:

      Hong Fan/Obsidian IS the Future King. He's the only character so far who's strength hasn't been measured and he's known to be the "God of Gods". So what if he killed the First Radiance Light, took his spot and is guarding the Audience Chamber. This also ties into the fact that when Hong Fang saw the Taenghwa and name of the Future King, he felt disgusted. Obsidian was disgusted at either the First Radiance Light or at his own actions. This resonates with my first theory to an extent but both are highly improbable
