Hopefully this book is worth it.

Indeed, I am back and have begun to re-read this novel. I have a suggestion of a few songs that I listen to specifically for this novel, that I feel really encapsulate the mood.

1 - Somewhere Only We Know by Keane
2 - Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani ft. Akon
3 - Anything by Crowded House, but some good ones are Fall at your Feet, Distant Sun and Weather With You.
4 - Most songs by Coldplay but especially Viva La Vida, Clocks and The Scientist.

Moving on from that, I wanted to peek into some of the worldbuilding of the story, or look at the less interesting aspects, so I thought I'd give a brief breakdown on soap making from lye. Lye is made from a mixture of a base or neutral component like water, and something acidic or with a high alkaline content like salt. It is also known as Sodium and or Potassium hydroxide.

In the case of Seo Eun-Hyun, our protagonist, the easiest way to go about producing lye in a world like Ancient China would be soaking wood ash in a barrel or tub of water. Over time, the potassium content dissolves creating a film of lye on top of the water, that is scooped out and used in the production of bar soap. Lye is then mixed with fats or oils (in this world likely animal fats), and in a process of saponification, is neutralized and turned into glycerin and unsalted fat(s) which is soap!

Apart from that, ignoring all the abilities and talk this chapter, Seo Eun-Hyun did his best to survive. 60 years in this world seems like an upper limit without the aid of modern medicine, hygiene and diet, so he lived a fairly fulfilling life all the same. What I appreciate about this novel, is that it starts us off at a very basic level, where our main character is nothing more a normal person, and we get to see him living through these lives (at least so far).
