    Yup. That's a trap. The monster or whatever this is that the Boss' companion became most likely relies on sound to target people. Conflicting sounds of footsteps, the warning to not speak to the trader, multiple random sounds of screams, wailing, fighting etc. coming crom other tunnels. I guess speaking to it lets the thing take over or attack the person who spoke.
