        I think the author relied on the history of the French catacombs when he wrote these volumes. However, there seem to be 131 steps in the French catacombs. So I think the author read somewhere another number 138, instead of 131. I bet that this is still a reference to the French catacombs.

          Well considering that only the upper and middle class can afford such things in the first place, I guess you could say it's expected. The nouve riche people acted like that in the past. They still do, even if its expressed in a different way. So you couldn't really say only Trierians do those things. It's simply the gullible rich people who know nothing about the world.
