    2276 Warm Awakening

Sunny stirred from the tender caress of sunlight warming his uncovered torso. Rays of light streamed through the drapes, the pale cloth whispering softly as a mild breeze sent it rippling and dancing. He lingered still for a time, reveling in the glow and the plush embrace of the mattress. Truly, it ranked among life’s sweetest pleasures, to rise with a grin lighting his features.

Moments later, he tilted his head and gazed at Nephis, who slumbered serenely beside him. Her silver locks sprawled across the cushion, and her exquisite visage radiated tranquil peace and a charming fragility in her repose. He savored the sight for several minutes, in no rush to rouse her. Unveiling the Dream Gate to the Night Garden had drained her thoroughly the previous day. She’d earned this reprieve.

He longed to lighten the load of yesterday’s endeavor, but alas, that task fell solely within Nephis’s grasp. Each of them wielded distinct talents when activating Dream Gates. Sunny, for instance, could unlock seven at once rather than a lone portal. Nephis, however, crafted a Dream Gate permitting travel both ways. Nightmare Gates ushered beings from the Dream Realm into the waking world, while Dream Gates ferried them from reality into the Dream Realm. Yet Nephis, a Dreamspawn—poised on the cusp of nightmare and existence, tethered to both realms—possessed a singular gift, perhaps because of that duality. Thus, only she could dispatch the Night Garden to Earth.

As Sunny pondered how her abilities might shift once the two realms fully merged, Nephis twitched and unveiled her striking grey eyes. Sunlight glinted within them, igniting her irises with flecks of brilliance. She swiveled her head drowsily, peered up at Sunny, and curved her lips into a smile. “…Caught you gawking at me again?”

He dipped his chin unabashedly. “Of course. Why wouldn’t I admire the most breathtaking woman alive?”

Nephis paused briefly, then huffed and nudged his face aside. Sunny chuckled, yielding to her playful shove… yet he didn’t miss the faint flush creeping across her cheeks.

Climbing from the sheets, Nephis conjured a breezy tunic from a flurry of luminous motes and stretched her arms skyward, exhaling contentedly. Sunny rose too, weaving modest garments from the darkness. The highest chamber of the Ivory Tower sprawled wide and shimmered with amber radiance, yet where light flourished, shadows lingered too—always at his beck and call.

Still, Sunny marveled at Nephis’s lithe form for a heartbeat, then spoke in a cheerful lilt: “A splendid notion just struck me. What if… we slip back beneath the covers?” Words weren’t truly necessary; she could feel his yearning.

Nephis shot him a withering glance over her shoulder. “Unlike you, I’m bound to a single frame.”

Sunny cocked his head. What did that imply? Was she… suggesting he’d worn her out last night? But she could rebound from any fatigue in an instant. Her lone form was practically tireless… Had he somehow sapped the unsappable? Sunny wavered between smugness and chagrin.

Just then, Nephis furrowed her brow and lobbed a pillow his way. “I meant I can’t be in two places at once! I’m already tardy for a chat with Effie… banish those filthy ideas swirling in that wicked mind of yours, rogue!”

Sunny let the pillow smack his face and flashed a guileless grin. “Well, looks like Effie’s earned my ire now…”

Nephis fixed him with a stern stare for a spell. He could tell she was stifling a smirk, though. At last, she shook her head. “I’ve got to prepare…”

Before long, Nephis exited her quarters and glided down the Ivory Tower’s steps. Sunny, naturally, had melted into her shadow by then—that incarnation of his lingered there most often while his other selves tackled their own duties. This way, he could hover near Nephis and stay attuned to her world’s key events without relying on Cassie as a go-between. The one drawback, though, was that Sunny couldn’t always stand by her side in flesh and blood. After all, he was officially deceased. It was fine to reveal himself to those in the know, at least.

Effie lounged in a salon on a lower tier of the Ivory Tower, relishing a lavish spread of treats. Sensing Nephis’s approach, she beamed and waved. “Blazes, Princess. These are heavenly… who’s your cook? Spill it. I swear I won’t poach them!” Then she hesitated, her brow creasing before she grinned impishly at Nephis. “Oh, guess I can’t call you Princess anymore. Our Princess has blossomed into an Empress. Ah… they mature so swiftly…”

Nephis offered a faint smile and settled across from Effie, a broad table between them. Effie stilled. The spirited huntress had perhaps been rattled most by the truth that the fearsome Lord of Shadows was none other than the winsome Master Sunless. Sunny still couldn’t suppress a gleeful cackle whenever he recalled the parade of horrified looks that had danced across her face in that instant. From mute shock, to the dawning awareness that it was the ominous Saint who’d indulged her son with ice cream, to a jolt of dread as she recalled badmouthing him to Nephis to boost the refined, chivalrous enchanter… and so much more. Truly, it was a treasure of a memory for Sunny now—so precious he graciously forgave half the times Effie had cornered him with lectures about the birds and the bees on Alethea’s island.

Regardless, she’d been uncharacteristically reserved and almost timid around him since. Even now, Effie stiffened at the mention of his name. She cleared her throat. “Right. About him. Look, Princess, I know you’re grown now, but…” Effie paused, then ventured warily: “He’s not lurking behind me, is he?”

Nephis blinked at her, puzzled. “No…”

Effie instantly reverted to her vibrant self: “That scoundrel! The Lord of Shadows! I get that he’s ridiculously handsome, wealthy, charming, mighty, and absurdly attractive, plus a stellar chef with deft hands… wait, did I mention handsome twice? No matter! Point is, there’s a sea full of catches out there. You ought to snag a gentle, upright man instead of latching onto the first random Supreme you stumbled across!”

But Nephis wasn’t finished. “Technically, he’s beneath the table.”

Effie went rigid. Sunny picked that precise moment to materialize in human form and plop into a chair beside Nephis. He flashed Effie a genial smile, paused briefly, then remarked in a warm tone: “Yes, you did say handsome twice.”

She let out an exasperated groan.

    2275 Shadowy Bossman

The depths of the Transcendent Devil’s realm strangely mirrored the heart of a genuine fortress. The space hardly appeared eerie or particularly foreboding—on the contrary, it gleamed with tidiness and warmth, verging on inviting. Naturally, this clarity stemmed solely from Awakened Kim endowing June with the gift to pierce the gloom that swallowed the sprawling hallways. He wouldn’t have dared to roam them solo, clutching something as fickle as a torch.

In truth, all he’d witnessed thus far—the yawning void of the secret Dream Gate, the decaying metropolis sprawled beneath the boundless shroud of a starless night, the hushed silhouettes drifting through its timeworn paths, the imposing silhouette of the grand temple, the looming castle cloaked in darkness and pulsing with a wicked vitality—proved utterly befitting as the realm of a shadowy divine being. And June was moments from encountering that entity.

Of course, he understood that Supremes weren’t truly deities. Yet, through the eyes of an ordinary mortal—or even a humble Awakened like himself—they could easily pass as such. The King of Swords and the Queen of Worms had largely veiled their might, but the Lady of the Ivory Tower bestowed her blessings with lavish openness. She seldom appeared, yet scarcely a soul on earth remained untouched by the glow of her majestic influence. Those who’d clashed in the decisive final skirmish of the Realm War grasped its marvels most vividly. The capacity to heal, the strength to obliterate—June harbored no illusions: if Changing Star desired it, she could reduce the world to ashes in the blazing fury of her fire. Or she might enfold humanity in her arms and guide them to redemption. If that wasn’t divine, he couldn’t fathom what was.

The Lord of Shadows stood as an equal force. So June, whose veins coursed with frost, battled to steady himself. His resolve wavered with every stride. “It’s… it’ll be fine. I’ve already crossed paths with the Lord of Shadows, haven’t I?” Out in Godgrave, he’d glimpsed the formidable Saint on numerous occasions. Admittedly, June had found him unnerving even then. Who wouldn’t? That ominous dark armor, the menacing mask, the icy and pervasive aura, the crushing weight of his lethal intent—the chilling enigma of it all. The mere notion of staring straight at that ghastly visage sent shudders through June.

Whispers had long hinted that something unearthly lurked beneath that mask, even when the Lord of Shadows was just a Saint. No one had ever seen him shed blood, after all. He wasn’t a Saint any longer. How much more terrifying had he grown after claiming Supremacy?

“A coin for your musings,” Awakened Kim said, breaking his reverie. June jolted faintly and turned to her. He paused briefly, then admitted, “I’m a little anxious about meeting my new master, truth be told.”

She offered a subtle grin. “I trembled too, the first time I faced him.”

He arched a brow. “May I ask what he’s like?”

Awakened Kim fell quiet for a moment, then replied with a calm face, “Well… his pancakes are divine.”

June’s eyelid flickered. *What on earth…* What did that even mean? Before he could press further, they arrived at towering oak doors. The massive panels swung open unaided, and Awakened Kim guided him into the throne chamber of the Dark Castle.

The vast hall radiated splendor and awe, its boundless reach cloaked in unfathomable shadow. Elaborate etchings adorned the walls, stretching across dozens of meters like a royal mural, portraying ferocious clashes and wondrous realms. At the chamber’s far end, a staircase ascended to a dim recess. There, atop an elevated platform, rested a sable throne. Perched upon that throne… June faltered, struck breathless for an instant.

All this time, he’d steeled himself to confront the Lord of Shadows—the daunting figure clad in ornate ebony armor, bearing a haunting mask carved with a snarling fiend’s grimace, silvery hair tumbling down its back. Yet reality diverged sharply from his expectations. Instead of the recognizable, if deeply unsettling, form of the Lord of Shadows, a lithe youth lounged on the throne with ease, dressed in a plain midnight tunic.

The young man’s skin gleamed like pristine ivory, his raven hair flowed like silk, and his eyes sparkled like twin obsidian stones. His refined elegance bordered on ethereal, leaving June feeling as though he gazed upon a masterpiece, not a person. Stranger still, he detected none of the frigid detachment, scornful pride, or bloodcurdling menace tied to the Lord of Shadows. Instead, he sensed… nothing whatsoever, as if the youth bore no presence at all.

“No, hold on…” June thought. This… this was the Lord of Shadows? The Lord of Shadows was this youthful? More astonishingly, he’d concealed this face behind a mask all along? June stood dumbfounded. He was reeling. But only briefly. A heartbeat later, he realized he’d been gawking at the Shadow Sovereign with wide-eyed shock. Even so, he had to wrench his gaze away. *Quit staring at your lord, idiot!*

Right then, June yearned to track down the fool who’d claimed the Lord of Shadows wore that mask to hide grotesque scars and throttle him in a ditch. The absurd tales that the elusive Saint and Lady Nephis had once been entwined suddenly didn’t seem so far-fetched. In fact, they rang truer than ever.

“Boss,” Awakened Kim said, dipping her head slightly.

The Lord of Shadows glanced at her and beamed. His smile dazzled with enough radiance to halt breaths, but alas, Kim appeared unfazed, while June wasn’t in the mood to savor it. Regardless, he felt a shiver of dread.

“Ah, Kimmy. Is this the fresh blood?” the Lord of Shadows asked.

She nodded. “Yes. Only one from the recent group made the cut.”

The Lord of Shadows turned his eyes to June. Remarkably, his stare wasn’t menacing, stifling, or overpowering. It felt… warm, even. Which only wound June tighter. After all, those in his line of work knew well that nothing posed greater peril than a being meant to inspire fear yet exuded none.

The Lord of Shadows leisurely lifted a hand… *What… what’s he about to do?!* …and gave June a casual wave. “You must be Corsair! Greetings, greetings… wow, your file? Incredible! You’re downright legendary.”

    June stiffened. “P-pardon?”

The Lord of Shadows shook his head with a sigh. “The black market, eh? How didn’t I consider that? More to the point… why didn’t Aiko figure that out? I ought to dock her wages…”

    June blinked twice. *Huh?*

And that was how he first encountered his new overlord, the Dark Sovereign.

While we're waiting for the chapter, let's talk about something. Why do authors often choose to publish on WN instead of other platforms like this site maybe ?

Take this novel, for example. On this site, it has around 29.6 million views, which is already impressive. But on WN, the same novel has about 53.6 million views — nearly double. And then on LN, it skyrockets to 194 million views!

Still, considering that this site started publishing this novel relatively recently, those numbers are actually really good(of course if you look at LN i assume they made profit fromSS on their site more than WB could imagine). So, here's my question: why do authors still prefer WN?

I know WN has subscription plans and maybe better monetization tools. But in sites like this it also will get strong traffic — more views can mean more ad revenue. Plus, this site could easily add a donation feature like RR, and I bet a lot of readers would support their favorite authors that way.

So... anyone know why WN still seems like the go-to platform?

i know about dark side of pirate but still lets be obvious not everyone can keep follow up on WN plan, so ppl chose sites like this and LN(whcih become some sort of paid ) rather than WB (not talking about other techniques like dark patreon or telegram to release ch)

I consider writers like G3 to be independent contractors for these WN companies. He is required to publish at least one chapter a day and he probably gets a salary.

Now, it might not be the best deal for him (unless they renegotiated it) but he's likely under contract now and I don't think G3 intended on Shadow Slave being as popular as it is and will be. Who knows what you'll find in these contracts too.

Because platforms like these don’t offer monetized/structured incentives. It was set-up and structured to pirate (and generate income for the builder on some sites) unlike platforms set-up to incentivize writers.

To be fair, it’s not like G3 is getting a lot from there, considering how epic this work is. But he is likely tied up with an exclusivity clause. Not sure how and what TurtleMe did to get out of such- probably renegotiated, and his work I think is on Tapas.
