    I am sure every soldier knew what they were getting themselves into. If they don't want to kill other humans for stupid reasons, they could simply choose not to participate in such a battle.

    What's the worst that could happen to them, if they don't respond to the call for war? Death? Miserable life?

    Now, the question is are they willing to suffer for their principles? If they aren't, then the tears they shed after choosing their path is just hypocrisy. Nothing more

        The had the choice to not fight for others. It's just that they weren't determined enough to follow through with such a choice. They are afraid of the consequences of such a choice. It is not like someone was controlling their body
